The Determination of the Polarisation of Raw Sugar by Polarimetry – ICUMSA


Method GS1/2/3/9-1(2011)

1. Field of Application

This method may used to determine the Polarization value of raw sugar based on the
purchasing contracts

2. Reagents required

a) Basic Lead Acetate – Dissolve 560g of basic lead acetate in 1liter of distilled water. Boil
for 30 minutes and allow to settle. Decant the supernatant liquid and dilute to a
density of 1.24 g/ml or 24.2g PbO/100ml with recently boiled water.

3. Apparatus required

Analytical balance readable to 1 mg


Polarimeter
100ml Standard flasks- Class A
Beakers

4. Procedure

4.1 Weigh out accurately 26.000gms of raw sugar sample

4.2 Quantitatively transfer the sample in to 100ml standard flask by adding 60 to 70ml of
distilled water.

4.3 Add basic lead acetate solution according to the expected polarization values. Below
99.3°Z use 1.00ml and above 99.3°Z use 0.50ml.

4.4 Mix the solution by gentle swirling add water until the bulb of the flask is full.

4.5 Allow to stand for at least 10minutes to attain room temperature. The laboratory
temperature to be controlled at 20 ± 1°C

4.6 Makeup the volume and shake thoroughly.

4.7 Insert a clean dry thermometer in the flask and record the temperature tm

4.8 Allow to stand the solution for 5minutes to settle precipitate

4.9 Filter the solution through whatman 91 filter paper.

4.10 Discard the first 10ml of filtrate and collect 50 to 60 ml filtrate.

4.11 Rinse the pol tube at least twice with the solution to be used and fill in such a way
that no air bubbles are entrapped.

4.12 Place the tube in the polarimeter and close the compartment & record the reading
Ptr.

4.13 Measure the temperature of the solution in the tube tr

4.14 Record the polarimeter reading in air Pa

4.15 Record the standard quartz control plate reading Qtq

4.16 Record the temperature of the quartz control plate tq

4.17 Record the polarimeter reading, pol tube filled with water Pw
4.18 Calculate the polarization corrected to 20°C by applying the below mentioned
formula.

4.19 Express the results to 2 decimal places as °Z

5. Calculation

P20 = Ptr – Pw + tr corr. – tm corr. – scale & inst. corr.


Where tr corr. = cPtr (tr-20) – 0.004 R(tr – 20 )
c = coefficient in table 1
R = Reducing sugars, % on sample

tm corr. = f Ptr (tm – 20 )
