DATABASE INTRODUCTION

DATABASE PROJECT : UIA AND DISASTER RELIEF

The UIA Secretariat is working on the creation of an online web database named « UIA and
disaster relief ». This initiative aims at presenting the different actors of architecture that are
involved in the case of natural disasters, their role, as well as their actions undertaken in that
field.

In the context of crisis, the coordination of the actors and a precise definition and knowledge
of their field of intervention is one of the keys of success for the mitigation and reconstruction
projects. This is why we suggest this tool in a double perspective:

To facilitate/ease networking between the partners of architecture involved

in the context of crisis
The national, regional and international different actors evolving in a disaster relief context are
numerous and can operate in various fields. The UIA wishes to act as a facilitator by presenting
in its database the humanitarian NGOs, the architectural and international organisations (UNO
system, specialised organisations…) who become involved in every stage of the process, from
prevention to reconstruction.

To allow and to establish access to information by the creation of a

worldwide platform in several languages and which is easy to use.
The UIA intends to present to its members, professionals of architecture and students, a
global panorama of the different emergency actors linked with architecture with a sensible
approach and with information. The database must be easy to understand and use, and
spread updated information.

THE DATABASE PROJECT

The database can be conceived in two ways

The first part consists of :

- Listing and classifying the different actors according to their definition
(national/international scale, cultural/architectural/humanitarian scale)
- Defining their field of intervention, their actions and the tools they use and have at
their disposal
- Giving the contacts of the actors (website link and contact)

The second part can, then, enrich the 1st part with a series of tools :
- Illustration of the database with the presentation of projects (examples of shelters,
rebuilt houses, techniques…)
- Bibliography on the theme “architecture and natural disasters”
- Glossary (terms of emergency intervention applied to architecture : mitigation…)
- List of training and students’ masters existing in that field
- Item “make a donation” on the website
- Research toolbar
Ongoing document, meant to be enriched
