The Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala decision laid down the constitution's
basic structure:[56]
In its 1967 Golak Nath v. State of Punjab decision, the Supreme Court ruled that
the state of Punjab could not restrict any fundamental rights protected by the
basic structure doctrine.[57] The extent of land ownership and practice of a
profession, in this case, were considered fundamental rights.[58] The ruling was
overturned with the ratification of the 24th Amendment in 1971.[58]
