Question 2 [10 marks]

Cycling Trip in Japan

I recently went on a seven-day cycling trip in Japan. Previously, I had gone cycling in
Cambodia, Thailand, Australia and Singapore. This trip was extra special because it was the
first time I would be the leader of the group.

The first two days in Tokyo was spent cycling around the city, enjoying the parks and
temples. We also cycled to Yanesan district to experience old Tokyo. There were many old
buildings, where residents still maintained a traditional lifestyle.

The next day, we visited the Imperial Palace. Once a month, the roads around the
palace are open only to cyclists and pedestrians. We got the chance to meet fellow cyclists
from other countries.

The following day, we woke up around 2.00 a.m. so we could leave at 3.00 a.m. to
cycle to Tsukiji Fish Market. The world-famous tuna auction would be held there. Only 120
visitor passes would be given out so we hoped to get them when the market opened at 5.00
a.m.

On the fifth day, we took a train ride, with our bicycles packed in bags, to Hakone. We
stayed there for one night. We had the chance to witness the breath- taking view of Mount
Fuji. We also went on a cruise and a cable-car ride, and visited art museums.

We returned to Tokyo on the sixth day and flew home the day after.

SECTION C- 20 MARKS

Question 4: Read the letter from Ginny to Swee Meng. [10 marks]

Dear Swee Meng,

I am so happy to hear from you. How are you and your family? I have been meaning to
write to you about our last conversation.

I know exactly how you feel because I used to forsake rest too. I was spending too
much time staying connected with my friends and relatives through emails, text messages
and instant messenger. I did not get enough sleep at night so I ended up feeling tired and
sleepy in the morning.

Here is what I did to overcome the problem. Firstly, I logged out from my email
account, instant messenger or a social networking site when I wanted to go to sleep. Your
friends will also log out if they see that you are not online.

Then, you should turn off any electrical devices in your bedroom. If you leave them
switched on, the glowing screens or dim lights can make it harder for you to fall asleep.
Moreover, hearing the pings coming from your devices in the middle of the night only makes
matters worse.

I also think that you should make sleep a priority. Tell your friends that you will not
answer any calls and text messages, or reply to emails one hour before your bedtime. This
will give you enough time to prepare for bed. Your body and mind needs time to wind down
as bedtime approaches.

Please try out these steps to a more peaceful slumber. A good night's sleep is what
your body needs to boost your energy so you can focus in school the next day.

I hope these tips will be useful to you. Please write soon. Well, I have to pen off now. I
have attached some photos of my trip in this email. Hope to hear from you soon. Bye!

Yours sincerely,

Marina

News Break
By Max Fatchen

Now why so loving, darling,

And why the sudden kiss?
You’d help me with some little jobs?
For goodness sake, what's this?
Now were you struck by lightning
Your face is clean for once, dear. Or were you stunned at sport?
Your clothes without a crease. Ah ... now I see the reason.
You saved your luncheon money? You've brought your school report!
Will wonders never cease?

No dropping of your school books,

No shrieking, childish treble.
Today you are a lamb, love,
Where yesterday a rebel.

But surely you're some stranger,

No rage or hullabaloo.
Come closer, let me look, dear,
Can this be REALLY you?
