Objectives: Once appropriate mathematical models of a system have been obtained, we may then analyze

these models to predict how the system will respond. To put this in context, control systems are often

designed to have fast transient responses, low steady-state error, or prevent instability. In this lab, we will

show how to analyze some of these properties from the system models.

Introduction: System Analysis


Systems behave differently. If we inject different input signals to systems we can see that the system

behavior changes-some systems respond quickly, others respond more slowly; some become over-excited

and bounce around, while other slowly follow the input signal. What determines their behavior is referred

to as “dynamics” of the system.

In the following we will be examining the response of systems to an input signal which is usually a step

change in input level.


Exercise 1: Step response analysis
For a single-loop second order feedback system given below

Find the step response of the system for values of ωn = 1 and ζ = 0.1, 0.4, 0.7, 1.0 and 2.0.
Plot all the results and fill the following table.

Exercise 2 : Analysis of automatic cruise control
Refer to Lab 2 for the modeling of the cruise control problem.

Let’s now set some design criteria for the problem. To have acceptable performances, an automobile should be able

to accelerate up to that speed in less than 5 seconds. For this application, a 10% overshoot and 2% steady-state error

on the velocity are acceptable. Therefore, the design specifications for this problem are:

 Rise time < 5 s

 Overshoot < 10%

 Steady-state error < 2%

Analyse the open-loop response of the system to a step input force of 500 Newtons and verify if those
specifications are met by the system without any feedback control.

This step response does not meet the design criteria placed on the problem.

The open-loop system is overdamped, and no overshoot

also the rise time is too slow.

Therefore we need to design a feedback controller which speeds up the response significantly without
negatively affecting the other dynamic performance metrics.

Conclusion:-
Control systems are designed to have fast transient responses, low steady-state error, or prevent
instability .

In this experiment we analyze models to predict how the system will respond. And show how to analyze
some properties from the system models using Matlab.

There was some difficulties in this experiment, that’s the questions wasn’t clear to me .
