Materials
 Whiteboards (4)
 Markers (4)
 Pencils (3)
 Checklists (4)

Setting

 11:00-11:20

Procedures and Instructional Strategies

1. Introduce learning target (Student choral response)
2. State behavior expectations (students model)
3. Review steps of strategy (students choral response)
a. Check denominator
b. Find common multiple
c. Multiply to make same
d. Add numerators
e. Simplify
4 1
4. Demonstrate strategy using 9 + 6 = on a whiteboard. Say each step aloud and check each
step when completed. Say your thinking aloud as you solve the problem. For example,
“Check the denominators. They are not the same, I cannot solve this problem the way it
is. Check. Find common multiple. I will list the multiples of 9. 18, 27, 36, 45”. (End time
about 11:08).

5. Students write + = on boards. As a group walk through the steps to solve the
3 7
problem.
a. “What is the first step?”
b. “Is the step complete?”
c. “What should I do next?”
d. “How do I do that?”
e. “Is the step complete?”
f. “What is the next step?”
g. “What are we going to multiply?”
h. “Is the step complete?”
i. “What is the next step?”
j. “Do I add the denominators?”
k. “Is the step complete?”
l. “Can we simplify the problem?”

6. Students write 10 + 4 = on boards. This time students walk through the steps with little
teacher guidance. Help students when problem or error arises.
7. At 11:15 hand out practice worksheet. Students’ use provided checklist to independently
solve the problems and check each step off as completed.
8. Revisit learning target. Have discussion on what students did and how well they
accomplished the target.
9. 11:20 students go back to class.
Lesson Objective
When given five problems of adding fractions without common factors between uncommon
denominators with conversions, student will use a checklist of the standard algorithm to solve
with 100% accuracy on 3 consecutive occurrences.

Assessment
1. Give the students the five-problem practice worksheet with checklist.
2. Grade students based on the use of the checklist.
3. Students who get the wrong answer should work through the steps again to see where
they went wrong. Help students spot these errors.
