Home schooling: Is it worth it?

Nowadays, homeschooling is becoming popular in our country. Many of parents who

decided to educate their children at home has increased significantly. They choose

homeschooling because it is better than regular school, especially for children’s development.

Both of them have advantages and disadvantages, but many people believe that is more

appropriate to send children to school instead of teaching them at home.

The first advantages of homeschooling is more flexible in learning schedules. When

children are sent to homeschooling, parents can decide how to schedule their child’s daily

instruction. It does not have to take nearly as much time as it does in regular school. Children

could start in the morning, or they could start in the afternoon. As a result, children’s daily

instructions finish in time for other activities. Moreover, homeschooling provides a flexible

environment for learning. There is no requirement that children have to study in the same

location at home. Teachers or parents can teach them in a child’s room one day, move it to

the kitchen the next day, and to the family room another day. The other important advantage

is independent thinking and character formations. It is developing children’s thinking.

Homeschooling allows children to create an environment where they can be distanced from

the negative peer pressure and bad influences. For example, if the child is in parent’s control,

a mother or father has the opportunity to encourage and help them to develop a self-image

that does not depend on the opinions of others. Furthermore, character formations can be

created by homeschooling. Many parents who choose homeschooling think character is really
important for children. They want to be able to guide their child in the formation of their

character. Students who are home schooled have the ability to develop the skill to think for

themselves before considering the opinions of others in their decision-making.

On the other hand, there are many disadvantages of homeschooling. Many people

believe that homeschooling is more expensive than attending a regular school. Parents who

choose to send their children home school, as opposed to free regular schooling, are primarily

responsible for purchasing the curriculum as needed. It can cost, approximately Rp.±1.

000.000 per child. This includes costs for field trips, books, computer software, and materials

for projects, as well as the many other resources available to parents. When children are sent

to school, the cost is just for transportation and child’s allowance. It does not spend much

money than educating them at home. The other disadvantage of homeschooling involves the

development of social skills. Most homeschooling parents are glad to get their children out of

the negative social environment in classrooms. This means that they are now responsible for

the social development of their children. Even though social development skills are learned

through everyday interactions, such as a trip to a supermarket, libraries, malls, and parks, it

still needs intensive places such as classroom, fields, and parks with their friends.

In summary, homeschooling has some clear disadvantages, including the cost and

social skills. Parents must be sure when they want to send their children at home. Because if

the parent still send them for homeschooling, it will give a bad impact for child’s

development.
