Bleed Air Distribution

Refer to Figure 1
The bleed air distribution system receives bleed air
from the engines, or from the APU, or from a high
pressure air ground cart.
The bleed air system has three modes of
operation:
−AUTO − system is fully automatic (this is the
normal system setting)
−MANUAL − the pilot manually controls the
bleed air system configuration
−CLOSED − usually used for ground cart
operations (the selection prevents reverse
airflow into the engines.
The bleed air distribution system has components
and ducting that is used to control the routing of
bleed air to the systems that follow:
−Air conditioning
−Wing anti−ice
−Cowl anti−ice
−Engine starting.
The system also includes the controls and
indications related to bleed air distribution.
Bleed Air Indicating
Refer to Figure 2
The bleed air indicating system monitors the
system components and their operation. The bleed
leak detection system monitors for leakage in the
distribution ducting and provides warning to the
flight crew.
The bleed air indicating system is monitored by the
anti−ice and leak detection computer (AILC). The
AILC receives inputs from the leak detection
elements and provides indications to EICAS. Two
air conditioning system controllers (ACSCs)
monitor the system functions and provide outputs
to regulate the system bleed air pressure. The
bleed air is regulated to make sure that there is
sufficient air to operate the related pneumatic
systems.
