DMNG System Overview
The DMNG system, Digital Mobile News Gathering, is a video uplink solution designed by
AVIWEST. Dedicated to stream videos over various network connections, the DMNG PRO180
can stream over Wide Area Network (WAN), Local Area Network (LAN), WiFi and bonded
3G/4G mobile networks. It can also stream via satellite connections using a portable satellite
broadband terminal such as BGAN, THURAYA IP and KA-SAT, or a satellite modulator.

The DMNG ecosystem includes at least two types of products:

 field units, like the DMNG PRO transmitter,

 DMNG Studio receivers.

A DMNG ecosystem can also include a DMNG Manager, which is the server application
designed to monitor and manage the entire DMNG ecosystem.
The DMNG PRO180 transmitter captures, encodes and transmits live or recorded videos. The
DMNG Studio receives, decodes, stores and broadcasts video files.
Based on the use of IP networks, the DMNG system makes the most out of the available
connections to stream a video from anywhere in the world to a Studio receiver.
The DMNG PRO can stream over various networks or satellite networks using one of these
transport protocols: Unicast or Multicast RTP, MPEG Transport Stream over UDP, also called
MPEG-TS, and "TS over IP".
Thanks to its cutting-edge H.264 dual encoder, the DMNG PRO allows using two distinct
video resolutions for its main functions: Live and Store. The DMNG PRO can adapt
automatically and dynamically the video resolution to stream a live with the highest video
resolution possible according to the networks performance in real-time. Meanwhile, the
resolution adopted for the Store function only depends on the profile selected.
To ensure a reliable transmission and therefore enhance the video quality, the DMNG PRO
combines a proprietary bonding technology and a "Forward Error Correction" algorithm, also
called FEC. The bonding of multiple wireless and wire network connections aims to increase
the available bandwidth. In mono-link connections, the bonding stack also aims to secure the
link. Moreover, the FEC mechanism adds redundant data to a support stream to rebuild
packets in case of packet loss. The FEC therefore allows minimal break-up.

7
DMNG PRO Overview
This section aims to present the DMNG PRO to the on field users and to people in charge of
configuration and maintenance, called studio technicians throughout this user guide.

Designed for on field users who should be focused on the video content they produce and
not on their equipment, the DMNG PRO is very easy to use thanks to its user-friendly
touchscreen. You can use the DMNG PRO with most professional cameras since it supports
HDMI, HD-SDI and composite video sources.
The DMNG PRO offers three main functions:

 Live: Streaming a live video

 Store: Recording a video file
 Forward: Forwarding a video file

In order to make the use of the Live and the Store functions easier, the DMNG PRO comes
with preset profiles for each of these two functions. Moreover, on field users can configure
basic settings via the touchscreen, including configuring network interfaces and studio
profiles. However, to set up the DMNG PRO and configure the advanced settings, studio
technicians have to access the Web configurator, the on-line configuration tool. For more
details about the Web configurator, please see Web Configurator Overview.
In addition to its three main functions, the DMNG PRO offers the possibility to record a video
on an SD card while streaming a live. This function, called Auto-record, allows video
recording with the highest video resolution possible according to the video source, whereas
the video resolution adopted for live streaming only depends on the networks performance.
The Intercom, which is an optional function, allows the audio communication between the
Studio and the on field user. To use this function, a microphone and headphones must be
plugged to the DMNG PRO.
Once set up, the DMNG PRO is readily on-air given that it detects the available networks and
automatically adapts the video resolution to the network performance for live streaming,
thanks to the automatic video resolution mode, and to the video source for recording.
Please note that the DMNG PRO exists in several versions to match specific requirements, for
more details about the existing versions and accessories see Versions of the DMNG PRO and
Accessories for the DMNG PRO.

Front Panel

DMNG PRO180

The connectors for the headphones and the microphone are 3.5mm mini jack connectors
designed to use the Intercom function.
The DMNG PRO only supports exFat and Fat32 SD cards, SD cards formatted in NTFS are not
supported. We recommend using at least class 4 SD cards.

DMNG PRO180-RA

The 8 MCX connectors are designed to plug two QUAD external cellular antenna arrays. Only
QUAD antennas provided by AVIWEST can be used with the DMNG PRO180-RA. No other
external antenna can be used with the DMNG PRO180-RA. The first four connectors, located
on the left on the picture above, are linked to the modems 1 to 4 and the four next
connectors, on the left on the picture above, are linked to the modems 5 to 8. When
plugging two QUAD external antenna arrays to the MCX connectors, the DMNG PRO180-RA
automatically switches from its internal antennas to the QUAD external antenna arrays. The
combined use (embedded antennas + external QUAD antenna) is forbidden. If one QUAD

9
external antenna array only is available, you have to disable the modems that are not linked
to this external antenna. For more details about how to disable modems, please see
Disabling Modems from the Settings Menu.

What is a Live profile?

The Live profile determines the video resolution for the output, besides other parameters.
The video resolution can be automatically adapted to the network performance. The AUTO
video resolution has two operating modes:

 A fixed video resolution is automatically set, based on the result of the bandwidth
test (AUTO video resolution with Dynamic video resolution OFF)

 The video resolution is dynamically set according to the network performance in real-
time (AUTO video resolution with Dynamic video resolution set to HD_max or
SD_max). Thus, the DMNG PRO adopts the highest video resolution possible within
the current networks condition. Then, the video resolution may vary during the Live.
Nonetheless, Live profiles can also determine a preset video resolution for the output, for
instance HD. Note that the output resolution for a Live depends on the networks capacity.
Low bandwidth does not allow high video resolutions: SD and HD.

Note: When you use a Live profile configured with the TS output mode, the
touchscreen only shows the TS over IP option in addition to the Start and Preview
buttons.

 your main constraint:

o Low latency
Streaming a video with a very low latency implies high bandwidth.
o High video resolution
Streaming a high resolution video implies high bandwidth and stable network
conditions.
o Transmission reliability
The Dynamic video resolution and/or the Max. Redundancy percent are set-
tings that influence the transmission reliability.

52
o Data consumption
The video bitrate and/or the redundancy percentage impact the data con-
sumption.
 the networks performance on the shooting location (available bandwidth, dead
zones…).

Max Redundancy Percent

To reduce the probability of packet losses and increase the reliability of the transmission,
you can set the maximal redundancy as a percentage of the audio and video bitrates (only
for Live profiles with STANDARD bonding mode as well as for Live profiles with KA bonding
mode configured with the VBR bitrate mode). Thus, the exceeding bandwidth is used for
packet retransmission.

Guidelines on Video Settings in Live Profiles

Video Resolution
There are three possibilities to set the output video resolution:

 Select a fixed video resolution (from QVGA to HD)

 Select the AUTO video resolution
The DMNG PRO automatically sets the video resolution according to the available
bandwidth estimated during the speed test performed before starting the Live.
 Select the Dynamic video resolution (only available in VBR bitrate mode)
The DMNG PRO adapts the video resolution dynamically during the Live according to
the real-time performance of the bonded networks. Thus, the video resolution may
vary during the Live to output the highest video resolution possible under given net-
work conditions.

Video Bitrate
On setting the video bitrate and the maximal redundancy percent, always keep in mind the
maximum download capability of the router to which is connected the DMNG Studio in
order to avoid congestion at the receiver side due to an overload.
You can set the video bitrate at 100kbps minimum and up to 10000kbps**. Please refer to
the table below to set the video bitrate according to the video resolution and the frame rate.

Min. Video Bitrate

Max. Video bitrate
Video Resolution @ full framerate
(in kbps)
(in kbps)
HD 1,500 10,000**
SD 800 6,000
HHR 300 4,000*
CIF 200 2,000*
QVGA 100 1,000*
* For low video resolutions (QVGA, CIF and HHR), the video bitrate is automatically capped
at its maximum value.

53
** 10000kbps is the maximal video bitrate for HD video resolution. However, if the auto-
record is activated, the maximal video bitrate is 6000kbps for both the Live transmission and
the video recording.

Frame rate
The frame rate is the number of images per second. By default, the frame rate is set to FULL.
For your reference, the framerate ranges are 25–30 for progressive mode and 50-60 for
interlaced mode.
To enhance the video quality at low bitrate, in particular the spatial quality for talking head
scenes, you can set the frame rate to LOW. The LOW frame rate is available in CBR and VBR
bitrate modes, however it is not availbale if the video resolution is set to AUTO.

Configuring Network Interfaces
In addition to its internal mobile modems, the DMNG PRO has three network interfaces: two
Ethernet interfaces and a built-in WiFi modem. From the NETWORK tab, you can configure
each network interface independently.

Ethernet Interfaces Configuration Modes

The DMNG PRO offers three different network configuration modes for the Ethernet
interfaces: one static mode and two dynamic modes. The table below explains each network
configuration mode.

To configure a network interface in STATIC mode, you have to enter a

static IP address, a subnet mask and a gateway.
STATIC mode
Note: Configuring in static mode requires that you are
administrator of your network.
To configure a network interface in DHCP mode, you have to connect the
DMNG PRO to a broadcast domain that has a DHCP server, i.e. a router
or an ADSL box.
DHCP mode
The DHCP mode is the easiest way to configure network interfaces since
the DMNG PRO automatically receives its parameters from the network.
This is the default configuration for the ETH1 interface.
In this case, the DMNG PRO acts as a DHCP server. It automatically de-
tects from the Netmask field the IP addresses range that it can use for
assigning an IP address to the connected host. The DMNG PRO then as-
signs an IP address to the equipment connected.
GATEWAY mode
This is the best configuration mode to perform the setup configuration
since you do not need to enter any IP address.
This is the default configuration for the ETH2 interface.
The default IP address for Ethernet 2 is 192.168.10.10.

62
Configuring the SIM Cards
From the OPERATOR tab, you can configure up to fifty 3G/4G SIM cards.

Note: You must disable the SIM card PIN code prior to the SIM cards configuration.
① Insert the SIM card into a modem.
② Reboot the DMNG PRO or deactivate and reactivate the modem from the Status
menu or from the Network tab of the Web configurator, please see Managing
Modems.
▷ On the DMNG PRO Status menu, a "NEED CONFIG" message appears in
front of the modem name.
③ On the OPERATOR tab, click on "Get the modem list".
▷ A list of the inserted SIM card appears.
The "Slot ID" indicates in which modem the SIM card has been inserted.
The DMNG PRO detects the SIM ID or the modem ID.
④ Enter the following data for each SIM card:
o Name: Character string without spaces (optional)
o APN: Access Point Name, provided by the operator
o Username: Provided by the operator
o Password: Provided by the operator

Note: For some SIM cards and network operators, only the APN is required.
⑤ Click the "SAVE CONFIG" button.
▷ On the Status menu, you can now check the status of the modem: when
the modem is connected to a cellular network,
the DMNG PRO shows the operator name, IP address and signal strength
for the modem.
For more details about the network connection error messages, see Net-
work Connection Error Messages.

63
Selecting a Network Operator (Roaming)
This section explains how to select or configure the network operator to connect SIM cards
to a specific mobile network. This option allows you to use the DMNG PRO abroad with your
local SIM cards, i.e. SIM cards bought in a different country than where you are using them.
This option also allows you to select the network operator for SIM cards that can connect to
different mobile networks.

Prerequisites:
 Configure each SIM card in the DMNG PRO with the right APN (i.e. the APN provided
with the SIM card by the mobile network operator).

 You have to be on location (i.e. in the country where you are going to use the
DMNG PRO).

 You have to know which foreign service provider has a roaming agreement with your
SIM card operator.

You can now select the network operator for each SIM card. To do so you have two
possibilities:

Scanning the available network operators:

① On the OPERATOR tab, click the "Scan" button in the row of the slot in which is
inserted the SIM card.

Note on Cables
Interconnecting video devices requires using good quality cables in order to avoid any
attenuation and perturbation due to radiations.

The following photo shows the difference between several HDMI and coaxial cables.

The first cable is a fully shielded HDMI cable: a braided shield protects the wires and the
connectors are shielded with copper. This is the only type of cable suitable for use with the
DMNG PRO.
The second and third cables are not properly shielded: a braided shield protects the wires
but it does protect the connectors. Do not use these kinds of cable with the DMNG PRO.
