COURSE DESCRIPTION

Accounting is a “language of business”. Hence, the objective of the course is to provide you the
fundamentals of financial statements, as potential users of the financial information. For that
purpose, this course is designed to offera basic understanding of financial accounting including the
fundamental accounting equation, accounting concepts and principles and bookkeeping.

COURSE THEMES

Financial statements; statement of financial position (balance sheet); income statement; cash flow
statement; statement of shareholders’ equity; generally accepted accounting principles; assets;
liabilities; equity, revenues; expenses; auditor’s report; general journal; general ledger; trial balance.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, you should have a strong understanding of:
- Define fundamental accounting equation
- Determine and prepare the appropriate journal entries to record accounting events
- List, define and explain the purpose of basic financial statements
- List and define the most current Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
- Identify major asset, liability, equity, revenue and expense items and explain how they are
accounted for in the financial statements.
- Perform book keeping and prepare basic financial statements; classified balance sheet,
income statement and cash flow statement.
- Apply the full accounting cycle by using spreadsheets: Enter (journalize) accounting
transactions, post to T-accounts, prepare unadjusted and adjusted trial balances, prepare
income statement and balance sheet through Excel
- Prepare cash flow statement
- Calculate basic financial ratios
- Calculate the value of inventory through inventory valuation methods; FIFO and Weighted
Average methods.
- Calculate depreciation expense for property, plant and equipment account.

Repeating Students: Note that you also need to register at the newly provided registrations
URLs. Do not simply login to Connect as a login will simply show your previous Connect
courses.

If you had previously purchased a code for this course, please note that your access will have
expired or will expire during the semester. Notify your instructor right away through e-mail
(deadline: Feb 7 @ 5.30pm) that you will need a new code, so that the McGraw Hill
Education representative can be informed of your case and obtain a new code for you at
the beginning of the semester. A new code will only be provided if you had purchased a
code for this course previously, not simply because you are repeating the course.

1. Midterm & Final Examinations (65%): Two midterms and a comprehensive final examination
will be administrated during the semester. Exams will be a mixture of problem-solving and
essay questions. The questions will be designed to assess the students’ knowledge of the
course content and their critical thinking abilities. Make up exams are administered only
during the finals week as a single comprehensive exam for the missed midterm and/or

final. Therefore, the students are strongly urged to take the exams on the scheduled dates.
Do not forget to take a copy of the legal health report within three days after the exam to
the instructor.

2. Homeworks & In-Class Assignments (15%): Homeworks will be CONNECT web-based after
introducing selected chapter. In-Class assignments will be conducted unannounced during
the class hours.

3. Quizzes (15%): There will be announced 3 quizzes. There is no make up for these activities.
No switching between sections are accepted for any reason.

4. Self-Study Exercises (5%): CONNECT web-based self-study exercises before introducing


selected chapters .

CONNECT REGISTRATION
STEP 1: Go to the registration URL. You should see a page that says “Welcome.”
STEP 2: Enter the e-mail you want to use in the box on the bottom right and then click on
BEGIN.
Note: If you already have a Connect account, you will next be asked for your password. Otherwise, you will create your
account as explained in the next step.

STEP 3: Create your McGraw Hill Education account. Repeat your e-mail address, choose a
password you want to use, enter your first and last name (no nicknames), select a security
question and answer. Click on the box next to “I agree” and then click on CONTINUE.
Note: Passwords are case sensitive and must contain 8-20 characters including: 1 uppercase character, 1 lowercase character
and 1 number. (No spaces)

STEP 4: Click on “No thanks. I want to continue with my new account.”


STEP 5: On the next page, if you have purchased your Connect code from Meteksan, enter it
under the box that says “Use Connect Code” and click on REDEEM. If you have not yet
purchased your code, click ACCESS NOW on the bottom right of the page to start your
Temporary Access which is valid for 2 weeks at the beginning of the semester. You need to
purchase your code before the end of those 2 weeks so as not to have any interruption in your
access.
Note: Repeating students who still have a certain duration before their previous access expires will not see the page asking
for a code. However, their access will expire some time during the semester, so they need to inform their instructor that they
need a new code BEFORE their access expires.

STEP 6: Click on CONFIRM on the next page.


STEP 7: Click on GO TO CONNECT on the next page.
STEP 8: Once inside Connect, go to the left menu to find “Classes” and choose your course.
You will now have access to your e-book, SmartBook, and assignments.
Note: Once you have completed your registration, you no longer need to use the Registration
URL to access your Connect classroom. It is sufficient that you go to
https://connect.mheducation.com/ and enter your e-mail and password selected in Step 3.
