3 . How do you define success?

What factors do you think are decisive for achieving

success?
I think success is about achieving the little goals you set for yourself that give you a sense of
accomplishment. It can be simple things such as getting an A on a difficult exam or bigger things l
ike graduating from high school/college. It's knowing that there was a challenge or obstacle that y
ou managed to overcome.
What's more,If you've managed to live a relatively happy life, I think that's a success. Our wo
rld is driven and focused on monetary value, but not all those that are rich are happy.
Some people think that opportunity is the first factor leading to success. They hold the idea, as a pr
overb saying, “Man proposes, god disposes”. Because almost all successful people have good luck
and have caught their valuable opportunities, they believe that opportunity is a leading condition
of the success. If seizes and makes the best use of opportunity available, one can succeed surely. I
n summary, to them, chances and lucks play the most important role on the road to success.
However, others maintain that “no pains, no gains” .Without exerting oneself, one could neve
r expect to achieve success in no matter what one is doing. As is known to all, there is no royal roa
d to the summit of success. One is likely to succeed only when one has worked with whole-hearte
d devotion and perseverance. Those who are lazy, sloppy and indifferent to their work, those who
never concentrate on work will definitely end in failure. On the whole, as far as they are concerne
d, hard-working is the decisive factor to success.
In my view, both hard work and opportunity eventually matters. They are inseparable from ea
ch other, and put together, they make a great success. Hard work is to luck what fish is to water, an
d can be seen as an interior precondition of success. It lays the corner-stone for building a house w
hile luck serves to cement it, to make the building bricks adherent to one another. They are the twi
ns that contribute to success together. They are the factors from within and without respectively. W
e must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. When opportunities come, meet and make full us
e of them. Only in this way can we succeed one day.
5. What do you think is the most serious challenge of living in a big city?
There are many serious challenges of living in a city, such as the high housing price , the
intense competition , the bad air and so on.I think the most serious challenge is the traffic. With
too many people and cars , the traffic becomes very heavy ,especially during the rush hours ,and
almost everywhere is crowded. Those drivers that tend to drive at a high speed are likely to cause
many traffic accidents. What is more , as a daily commuter ,I have to waste a lot of time traveling
to and back from work .Therefore ,should the traffic problem be solved ,life in big city would be
more enjoyable.
Because of the high rate of migration to big cities such as Beijing and shanghai, living in ther
e is becoming more and more difficult. The most serious challenge of living in a big city, in my op
inion, is crowding.
Big cities are very crowded, no matter on the pavements or in the buses. What is more, the tra
ffic is always heavy. It‟s a nightmare to drive in and around Beijing or something like this. Moreo
ver, city‟s car parks are always very full. Sometimes it may take hours to get from a given place to
another.
So if you decide to settle down in big cities, make a preparation for facing the big challenge.
7. What factors influence you most in your choice of a job?
I would choose a job where I could do something beneficial for ordinary people. In other wor
ds, it would be something helping people. Teaching is one of that kind of job. Traditionally teacher
s have been very respected in China we have a saying that a teacher for a day is a father for life. N
owadays, attitudes are changing, perhaps people are more realistic. But my dream isn't changing. I
want it to be my whole life's career because I feel I can contribute something to people's lives an
d to help them as a teacher
8. How would you prepare for a job interview?
I would choose a job where I could do something beneficial for ordinary people. In other wor

12 Some people say that we live in a TV culture. Do you agree? Give your reasons for your
answer.
I think, today we are living in a TV culture. There are many reasons for this statement. Firstly
, In china, the average television set is switched on for between five and six hours a day, and the a
verage Chinese adult watches for approximately three hours. Recent research has shown that the a
verage child born in the mid-1990s, when 18 years of age, will have spent more time watching tele
vision than any other activity except sleep.” Secondly, To a large degree, we are affected by TV cu
lture. Now, there are many movies and television shows that reflect our culture. A show or movie
must address some current societal problem or trend in order to truly reflect our life; the producers
of the show attempt to integrate many real life situations to the show. In fact, we are affected by t
his situation.
Undoubtedly, the culture aspect wouldn‟t be ignored by these opera makers. As written in the
text, the author highlights the including of Haspanic actors. This, as far as I am concerned, shows
that TV penetrates deeply into every ordinary people‟s daily life. TV itself is a miniature of a certa
in culture, but now, the article makes me realize that TV operas can have an interaction to a countr
y‟s inner culture, too. Take the USA as an example, it is a country called „the melting pot‟, so the
racial problem has long been deeply rooted in this country‟s vessel. As was stated in the
article, soap operas, though poorly made and lacking thought, have a positive influence on the inte
gration of races. It also provides more chance for the minority actors, and it to some extent make d
ifferent races closer in people‟ idea.
The TV and culture should be seen as a whole and viewed with complexity. Without doubt, T
V around us are also twisting and changing our ideas, and our ideas are just a critical component o
f our culture
13 Do you have any suggestions as to how traffic conditions can be improved in big cities?
Traffic conditions in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjing are becoming worse and
worse than before. We must do something to deal with this problem.I think we'd better reduce the
number of cars, especially private cars. Nowadays, automobiles have brought a lot of problems ,
such as traffic jams, air pollution and noisy to many cities. In order to limit the number of cars,
Some western countries encourage people to ride bicycles. On the one hand, more people riding
bicycles means less cars on the roads. This will do good to traffic and air condition. On the other
hand , rinding bicycles can build our bodies. Riding bicycles can provide opportunities for people
to do exercise, which is good to our health. In a word, I think that policy is not only good to
society but also to individuals.
16 Why do you think so many people prefer to immigrate to the United States of America?
Immigrants chose to come for various reasons, such as to live in freedom, to practice their
religion freely, to escape poverty or oppression, and to make better lives for themselves and their
children.
Some people already have members of their family residing in this country, and desire
reunification. Through family-sponsored immigration, a U.S. citizen can sponsor his or her
foreign-born spouse, parent, minor, and adult married and unmarried children, and brothers and
sisters.
Some immigrants come to the U.S. because of employment opportunities. Through
employment-based immigration, a U.S. employer can sponsor an individual for a specific position
where there is a demonstrated absence of U.S. workers.
But the real reason is prosperity. For decades, economic growth has easily surpassed
population growth, giving the U.S., and much of the rest of the world, both more people and more
prosperity. Simply put, the desire for a better life somewhere other than the current residence. And
this country offers that better life they wish for.
17 How do you comment on TV commercials ?
Ok, well, when it comes to this key phrase: TV commercial, I think all of us are familiar with
it. Because when we want to watch the TV programmes and turn on the TV, many TV commercial
s all get into our sight. But do you think it is a good thing or a bad thing? In my view, we should lo
ok upon this from two sides. It has advantages also with disadvangtages. For example, these com
mercials can make people know more products. People can find more and more new products in to
day's advanced technological world. The commercials market is booming. This is a way that impr
oves the marketing rate of new products. However, TV commercials are deceptive to some extent,
so there are many bad businessman. They sell cheap or inferior products in order to protect their in
come. They use different ways to make up those products, and make those products look like qua
lity products. Then people can't resist the temptation from eyewashs of inferior products.
18 Do you think it’s possible to remove all commercials from TV? Your reasons for your
choice.
In this morden society, TV is an important and usual media. Many people use TV to transmit
the news. And the role of TV commercials is more and more important. The point of mine is that it
is impossible to remove all commercials from TV. Because there are several roles it plays that any
thing can not replace. Firstly, Compared to newspapers and other mediums, TV commercials can b
ring lots of money ,and it constitutes a large pat of tax, so if we remove all the commercials , the i
ncome of our government will decrease largely. Secondly, TV commercials can open our eyes and
let us know more new products and give consumers‟ more choice. The last reason is that there are
more and more wonderful and perfect TV commercials, and it can bring people beautiful visual en
joyment and spiritual shock, also we can learn a lot of knowledge from it!
19 Please comment on the advantages or disadvantages of frequent job-hopping.
Job-hopping is defined as frequently switching job. It may create potential advantages, and it
can also be too frequently to the detriment of your career. Advantages:
Some people think that Job-hopping provides them with a wide exposure to different work environ
ments. By changing jobs frequently, they have found that their networks of business contacts are
wider and in some cases, switching jobs have meant a faster way of getting a salary raise. Disadva
ntages:
But changing jobs frequently reflects badly on one‟s resilience and loyalty as an employee.
Frequently job-hopper could be seen as someone who lacks self-motivation, is directionless or pro
ne to feeling restless at the workplace. In addition, recruiters may not be convinced that you have
gained enough experiences and on-the-job skills since you have not stayed in any particular compa
ny for very long. They are also worried that you may leave them shortly after they hire you, forcin
g them to start the recruiting process all over again!
In conclusion, changing jobs frequently can do your career more harm than good.
20 If you were a manager, what would you do if the members of your department did not
get along very well?
if I were a manager ,I think my responsibility is to encourage people to dedicated to company
goals. good management requires understanding human nature so people can be motivated to
fulfill their potential. So I`d like to know as much about each individual as I could, professionally
as well as personally. If members of my department don’t get along very well, firstly I will start by
listening, actually listen to different voice. secondly ,I will analysis the reason and find a way to
solve it based on the fact. Then I will talk to them and share my thoughts with them. And in my
opinion, the most important thing is to try to understand by their side and eventually, maybe a
balanced and “win-win” result is the best.
22 It is said that successful people have better language ability than those who are less
successful. Please comment.
As we know, language ability is important daily life ability. Globalization has become an irre
sistible trend of contemporary world development. Our country will be more closely linked to othe
r countries. Obviously it offers opportunity for us to increase our exchanges and contacts with peo
ple who speak a great number of different languages in our life and work. The existence of commu
nication obstacles will block the cooperation between people with different languages. On the cont
rary, it is easy for us to communicate with them if we have good language ability. So a successful
person is good at communicating with other in different languages. In other words, a person who h
as excellent language ability is much easier to be successful. For example, if you want to get a job
in foreign enterprise, some interviews in English are necessary.
23 Do you think that frequent holidays will make people lazy? Why or why not?
I think it depends, because different people have different life style. For people whose work a
re very hard and waste energy very quickly, frequent holidays are necessary. For example, workers
on the railway, they often work despite day or night. If there is no frequent holiday to let them rest
, they will have big health problems.
But for people who works in normal daily time, frequent holidays may not be a good idea. Be
cause people don’t always have good plans for holidays, they may waste their time in TV shows,
movies, games and so on. Then they will become lazier and lazier , even tired of their jobs. I think
the company’s manager don’t want to see this result.
more time to relax: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. to travel to pursue one’s hobbies
to visit friends to read, etc. more time to study to review one’s lessons to learn English to bro
aden one’s horizons through visiting museums, art galleries, exhibitions, etc.
the disadvantages of week-long holidays ----negative effect on study: Too much play makes idle
minds. less time for study tendency to forget what has been learned, esp. English post-holiday fati
gue ----pressure on students who are financially disadvantaged:no money for travelling no money
to eat out feeling of inferiority strong feeling of loneliness
24 Do you think longer holidays will encourage consumption? Why or why not?
Yes, I think so. In longer holidays, more people would like to go out for shopping and travelling.
Owning to the unlimited market Demand, as long as people go to shopping mall, they will always
find something they want to buy; travelling is actually a good choice for people who have long hol
idays and it stimulates consumption too. We should purchase our food and drink, we should book
the hotel, we should take some gifts for our families and friends. All of this encourage consumptio
n. By the way, as a consumer, I think we must learn to consume rationally.
I don’t agree with this opinion, for example, I can make good use of this time to develop my hobbi
es, such as ,I have a lot of hobbies. I like stamp collecting and it teaches me a lot about cultures. I l
ike music and it relaxes my nerves. I love many kinds of sports. They can refresh my mind and do
good to my body. I like reading books which can enrich my knowledge. I like traveling too. I can
make friends and see the scenery and learn some culture .but all of these needn’t much money
31 What kind of qualifications do you think a person should possess to be a successful
manager?
I think there are four qualifications which is the most important if someone want to be a successful
manager. the first is leadership skills. A good leader is a person that is a well-respected by his/her
peers. A good leader encourages others to do well. A good leader does not dominate others and do
not try to belittle others. The second qualification is to listen. As a manager you will be faced with
a number of problems and your employees need you to listen to them to know that you are going t
o try and do something about all those problems. The third is
Problem-solve. If you cannot solve a simple problem or at least come up with a few solutions for a
problem, they will start to lose faith in your ability to be a manager. The fourth is to have a vision.
You need to have a vision that you can clearly communicate with others, you can Plan for the futu
re growth of the company and clearly show people how you achieve the goal.
32 Do you think people’s ability in language is important? Why or why not?
Yes, I think language ability is important for people. I will list the reasons from three aspects
in the following statements.
Firstly, language is a necessity in daily life communication. People from different places exch
ange ideas with each other using language. With he help of language, enemies will become friends
, strangers will become acquaintances, and friends will become relatives. Though language, you ca
n realize what kind of people the opposite side is and let others known you better. Living in the so
ciety, language enables people to understand other peoples and their cultures thus removing prejud
ice and hostility.
Secondly, you need language to do better in your work. Excellent language helps you to be q
ualified to your position. Take a sales representative as an example, introducing his/her products fl
uently and clearly to the customers is one crucial step, because this will determine his/her sales vol
ume thus salary. Sending e-mails is usual in work, if you are lack of the language ability to organiz
e your letter‟s contents vividly and persuasively, you maybe in the risk of losing your customer.
Thirdly, language plays a key role in people‟s study process, particularly for the students at s
chool. We students use language to communicate with classmates, teachers and social people in ord
er to broaden our eyesight. Reading related professional books requires us to have a well-founded
language background. Especially, if you are good at a foreign language, such as English, you can g
et advanced technologies and skills from the USA by reading English books or communicate with
Americans.
Assume that people live in the word without language, what will happen? I can‟t imagine tha
t!
That is all! Thanks for your listening!
33 What do you think you can learn from a talk show?
A talk show is a television or radio program where one person (or group of people will discuss var
ious topics put forth by a talk show host. Sometimes, talk shows feature a panel of guests, usually
consisting of a group of people who are learned or who have great experience in relation to whate
ver issue is being discussed on the show for that episode. Other times, a single guest discusses thei
r work or area of expertise with a host or co-hosts. A call-in show takes live phone calls from calle
rs listening at home, in their cars, etc.
35 Is it possible for Chinese to replace English one day? Why or why not?
I think it is impossible for Chinese to replace English in the future. The reasons are as follows
. First, as we all know, Chinese is the most difficult language to learn, while English is the most ea
sy one. Therefore, English is comparatively easier for one to grasp and learn as a communication t
ool. Second, geological speaking, Chinese speaking areas are limited to China and certain South A
sia countries. On the contrary, English speaking areas are widely spread and are not confined to se
veral countries. This situation is resulted from history. As we all know, England is the last Empire
in the world, which conquered almost 3/5 of the whole in its golden times.
Last, American, whose official language is English, possesses the "super power" status now a
nd in the foreseeable future. Therefore, English are the basic prerequisite needed for a countries as
well as individuals to deal with foreign issues, including politics, economics, culture, as well as to
urism.
On the other hand, due to lagged economic status of China, the fact that Chinese are not so po
pular will be well understood by us. What's more, though Chinese economic now ranked forth in t
he world, Chinese still are not a prerequisite for the foreign countries and foreign individuals to co
mmunicate with China because there are 200 millions people in China learning English due to its
practical use now. Thus, English speaking people can find themselves well understood by a Chines
e since they are educated with English since primary school. Only when Chinese people learn to v
alue their traditional culture, incline to dedicate themselves to spreading their culture and overcom
e their culture inferior attitude, Chinese will have a chance to replace English one day。 (But ob
serving from the current situation, it is pretty hard to change.)
36 Do you think the immigration trend to USA is as popular as it was before? Please
comment.
Immigration to the United States has been on the rise since the late 1960s.After five decades
of decline, the share of immigration in the US population grew from 5 percent in 1970 to 12 percen
t in 2003. But according to the survey of Census Bureau, in 2007, the immigration to the US was o
nly 500 thousand people, which was much less than 1800 thousand in 2006, and the number was d
own further in 2008. it is the downturn of the American economy and the publish of immigration l
aw that brought about the decline of immigration to the US.
Of course, the US is still a luminous beacon which guides all kinds of people to come around
from all directions. But the wave of immigration is ebbing now. There are lots of reasons, and eco
nomic depression is an very important element. People go to America for better opportunity to wor
k and to earn more. But the financial crisis hit the US powerfully, which causes high rate of unemp
loyment. Thus the opportunity to work is disappearing, so people prefer to stay at the own countrie
s rather than to take the risk to the US and get no job.
40 Can TV become the most important medium for transmission of a culture? Please
comment.
I think TV is the most important medium for transmission of a culture.
On the one hand, certainly those other institutions still exist, but their importance has been di
minished, and their meaning transformed through their transmission by he media. A TV set is on f
or seven hours a day in the average household. That is an enormous amount of time that television
is there spinning its stories. When we're in our cars listening to the radio, or reading magazines an
d newspapers, we're still hearing and seeing advertisers' messages. The spaces of our daily lives, b
illboards, even clothing such as T-shirts, anything that can be sponsored, is sponsored. Media-espe
cially television-has become the mainstream of our culture and their influence comes form their co
nstant presence. Their constant talk about what family, community and politics means even shapes
what we think about these other institutions. Their power comes from their ability to permeate an
d define our present social relations.
On the other hand, television spreads information in an accessible format to viewers quite qui
ckly. When an important event occurs, the audio and visual proceedings of that event can be broad
cast in order to inform viewers of the event. This of course requires the proper technicians, reporte
rs/journalists/broadcasters/etc., equipment, timing, and infrastructure that work behind (and in fron
t of) the scenes to bring a program to the viewers.
