ABSTRACT

This research was conducted to determine the effects of social media to the study habit of
the students.To achieve the objectives of the research the study used a descriptive
method which involve the survey of junior high school students in Mouth Carmel of
Maria Aurora. We used the multiple choice questionnaire and frequency questionnaire in
gathering the data. A total of 80 students were the respondents of the study selected
across the year level from grade 10 in Mouth Carmel School of Maria Aurora. The study
revealed the majority of respondents used facebook for making friends and chatting. In
addition , majority of respondents experience negative effect such as less study time and
due to the hobby participation on social media networks furthermore , there was high
addiction rate among students in the usage of social media networks.

INTRODUCTION:

Nowadays social media is everyone’s life through this they can share
a post like memes , viral picture and videos . As we go deeper into a world where social
media dominates some of people’s lives, you find yourself asking how much time do we
really use social media? Social media are so prevalent today that almost everyone has
some sort of social media account. These online applications allow people to
communicate and share their lives from all over the world . In fact social media is all
about networking social. Students are prowned in different platforms of social media for
example facebook, twitter ,and instagram. In our generation today in every past years
social media is slowly taken the world for example the social networking site which is
facebook have so became so popular today every people especially in the millennial love
to spend time checking facebook updates but they didn’t know that there are many
negative effects of using social media .Mostly are the students who are addicted to it they
do not realize the bad effect that they can get when they are using social media abusive.
This is the main purpose of this paper to know how students can minimize their time on
using social media and to show the impact of social media to their , performance and to
their health.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

This research we carried out to answer the following research question

1. What are the purposes of using social media on the student?


2. How much time that they spend on using social media?
3. What are the things should they do to prevent misuse of social media?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

This study aims to explain the importance of the proper uses of social media . It
aims to point out particularly adverse effects it poses student’s daily lives. These site
evidently have a lot of positive effects but they also have their share of negative impact
.This study would like to give enlightenment to that said phenomena. The researcher
would like to provide , through this research information about the impact of these to
student that would hopefully lead to realization of their own standing in terms of social
media .Lastly the researcher would like to provide evidence that would solidify the
support on controlling the usage of social media.

SCOPE AND DELIMITAION:

This study investigate the effects of social media in the study of the student, the
study includes what social media site they usually use. This study also contained about
the advantage and disadvantage of social media in the academic excellence of the
students, Beside this study would like to discuss if social media site effects the academic
performance of the students.

DIFINITION OF TERMS:

In order to understand clearly the subject matter we define the following key concepts.

Students:

Person or users who use social media sites

Social media:

It focus the online communities of people who share interest and activities or who are
interested in exploring the interest and activities of others.

Academic Performance:

Refers to how students deal with their studies and how they cope with or accomplish
different task given to them by teachers.

LOCAL RELATED LITERATURE:

Social media gave a big help to everyone, especially among the students ,
businessman and other members of the society. Social media has different features that
may enjoy by the people all around the world what the problem is, people loses their self-
control in using them.

Facebook is the most popular social media site today where in people may share and
upload videos, pictures , messages and chat. Twitter is also famous to every people
nowadays where in people can share their feelings, thoughts and ideas. Through twitter ,
they can easily be connected to their favorite celebrities and they can also be updated on
what is trend all around the world .

Social media communities will definitely stay due to is millions of users. In addition,
students today stay on these accessibilities of information they may get in social
networks. Social media may help them in giving knowledge in thesis and journals but
still negative effects of this still over weights especially about losing their self-control.

Social media bring a big benefit about communication because through this we can
easily communicate our loved ones despite of the geographic distance. Social media may
also help celebrities to be more contact to their fans because through these site they can
easily post what are the recent happenings about them. Through social media we can be
updated in every happening not just in celebrities but also the recent updates to our
country and also in the whole world.

Social media sites can be good ways to make connections with people who has similar
interest and goals. Communication in one of the main things why social media had been
viral and this is a huge place to gather information on what is trending.

FOREIGN LITERATURE:

Junco R. ( 2012 ) emphasizes a further investigation into the issue to find some
more variables like focus and intervention that may be strongly related to academic
performances. The negative correlation between Facebook usage and academic outcomes
may be justified by some negative academic impacts related the certain ways students use
this social medium. He observe that some specific uses of this social media are related to
improved academic performance while others contribute to lower academic results.

UI Haq and Chand ( 2012 ) investigated the usage age and popularity of famous
social media among university students with special focus on the gender based
comparison and the impact of the selected social media on their academic performance .
The two researchers evaluate the pattern and frequency of facebook use among university
students while focusing gender differences and student opinion about the impacts of this
medium performance . The research analyzes a random sample of 384 respondents
including an equal mix up males and females the respondents belong graduate and
postgraduate programs with a mean age of 21 years.

Research analysis shows that facebook is equally popular among male and female
students of the university under study. It is furred from the research that majority of the
users ( 61 % ) agree that this social academic perfermonce . Further analysis reveals that
among these 61% majority of the respondents where male. In addition to adverse effects
of facebook on academic performance , there was also on opinion that use of facebook
makes it hard for them to perform the best on these career performance .However the
researcher feels that the later opinion is not every celar and established and needs further
investigation.

Hamat, Embi & Hassan ( 2012 ) studied the use of social media media platforms
among undergraduate and postgraduate student of Malaysian institutes of higher
education . This qualitative research collected data on 6358 students respondents through
a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed this data to make observations on the use
of social media among them. The study also collect opinion of students about the impacts
medium on their academic performance.

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGH:

Quantitative method is chosen for the research. Data was collected using primary
data set though the distribution of questioner. This study will analyze the data collected
through quantitative analysis. Because statistical analysis give the respondents the
chance to get expressive information through mean output.

LOCALE OF THE STUDY :

The school where the researcher gathered and conducted is in Mount Carmel
School of Maria Aurora. Where there were 120 chosen respondents to the grade 10
students.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT:

The researcher decided to use the survey questionnaire method for accurate gathering
of data needed for the study. The questionnaire was formulated by the researcher through
the help of the research teacher. The instrument elicited data on the respondents regarding
the impact of social media.

DATA GATHERING:

For this study the chosen data collection method is questionnaire since the social
media network environment cannot be controlled unless otherwise design the most
suitable and cost effective method is conducting surveys through questionnaire to the
chosen students and collecting their opinions in various impact of social media.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT AND ANALYSIS:

To answer all the statements of the problem of this study, all accomplished
questionnaires were compiled and subjected to statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics
such a frequencies transformed to percentage and average used to employed
interpretation of data gathered. Categorization of some quantitative results and re-
classification of some quantitative results were done to facilitate a more meaningful
interpretation of the results.

In finding and interpreting the results, we compute the percentage with the formula:

The respondents reported the number of hours they spent on social media per day .
60% spend more than 3 hours per day and 27.5% spend in 3 hours , 12.5% spend for
2hours , and 6.25% spend for 1hour . The computation levels for more than 3hours was
the highest

SUMMARY

Social media has become an addiction for many. Instead of the students
concentrating on their homework or studying for a big test the next day, They are
spending hours looking through picture, answering their page comments, and chatting
with friends on the sites instant messenger. The purpose of this study to view the impact
of social media to the grade 10 students. This was studied in order to see the effects of
social media to the students there were 120 respondents for this research study the
respondents were qiven questionnaire, after collecting the questionnaire the respondents
will be tallied computed, analyzed. In data gathering the instrument we used is
questionnaire

Based on the survey using social media have both effects on the students this is the
advantage and disadvantage. The advantage are through social media they will easily
know the latest news and issues , and they can easily stay in touch with their loved ones
who lived far away and it found out that they use social media for education purpose , for
effective E-learning tool , to participate in online discussions and to conduct group
meetings for group projects and announcement and lastly for them to express their ideas
and feelings by posting it on their social media account. The most site they always visit is
facebook and according to survey they have more than 3 social media account and The
respondents reported the number of hours they spent on social media is more than 3 hours
,this is the negative impact of using social media in the students is when they used it
abusive based on the result a lot of respondents say that they always have lack of asleep ,
having a headache , always tired , lack of energy and lastly students are getting more and
more time engaged in social media so that it effects their studies.

RECOMMENDATION

The researcher recommend something to the students who are addicted on using social
media .

 Focus .Limit the number of number of social networks you use to only
those most relevant to your work and personal life
 Spend more time with your family
 Prioritize more important things
 Limit yourself
 Reflect on your need on social media
 Get a new hobby
 Turn off all your social media notification
 Cut-off times for responding and posting on social media
 Figure out how much time you’re actually spending on social media every
day
 Reflect your need on social media
 The usage of social media during study time should be limited because of
negative impacts on students concentration
 The researcher should perform on students with specific grade level in
order to generalize the results

CONCLUSION

The use of social media is growing day by day. Now it is important to keep the pace with
the rapidly changing society. Even today the society is not prepared to bear the
consequences of the misuse of social media which will result in the unacceptable and
unfamiliar social behavior. If there are no regulations of limitations on social media the
repercussions will accumulate. People need to change the destructive patterns of social
media used before it’s destroy society. There are also disadvantage of social media were
students prioritize social media before their studies based on the data gathered by the
researchers, students often used social media and after school hours most of them used
social media before studying their lessons. This kind of act would lead to dropping of
their academic. Lastly social media has been proved to have both positive and negative
effects on our youths. Individuals should make a conclusion wether to go on using the
sites on stop or even moderate on their using usage. Parents should guide and advice
their children on current matters like the usage of social media and warn them of it’s
negative impacts to them when misused or overused. The education curriculum also
should be revise so that it can include social media studies in it disciplines so as to alert
students that they need to be careful in their social media usage.
