We, the undersigned elected officials from across the state, write in opposition to any
ban on fusion voting in New York.
Fusion voting lets minor parties play a constructive role in state politics. Right now, New
Yorkers can vote on a minor party line to express their values and policy preferences without
“spoiling” an election or “wasting” their vote. Taking that choice away from voters in our state is
fundamentally anti-democratic. We should be empowering voters and making it easier for voters
to express their viewpoints, not limiting their choices.
For more than 100 years, fusion voting has been part of the fabric of New York's democracy,
and in 2019, it continues to play a vital role in our politics. Voters who favor the ideology of a
minor party should continue to have the right to nominate the candidate of their liking, even if
that candidate also enjoys the support of a major party. As Democrats, we especially note the
role that the Working Families Party has played over the last two decades. Many of us have run
and won our seats with their support. Moreover, WFP played an essential role in helping to end
Republican-IDC control of the New York Senate in the 2018 election.
In New York and across the country, Democratic elected leaders are leading the fight to expand
voting rights. The state legislature just passed an important set of voting reforms that removes
roadblocks to civic participation. Ending fusion voting would be an unacceptable step in the
wrong direction.
Sincerely,
