Welcome to Beatrix Potter For Beginners

This series has been developed to provide a language-arts resource that helps a child develop the pre writing
skills that lead to Foundation handwriting. We have chosen Beatrix Potter’s ‘living literature’ because it has
enduring value and the stories and illustrations are a delight to children world wide.

How to use this resource.

We have tried to make this workbook very easy to use. There is one lesson per page which can be printed as a
single or multiple copies, as needed. A complete story is followed throughout the lessons. The book begins with
simple tracing and leads to writing of words in sentences. There are places for your children’s own illustrations.
We recommend you read the original Beatrix Potter books to your students, as this will enhance their enjoyment
of the lesson. The books are easy to find. Try your local library. The student can make their own book of the story
as they go.

Grammar
The grammar rules and punctuation practices used in the original Beatrix Potter texts are outdated. We felt the
older style of punctuation may be confusing for young children. Therefore, we did a little editing, in particular re-
placing semicolons with full stops and inserting commas.

In the poetry extracts we chose to keep the capital letters at the beginning of each line, even though this is not
common practice in modern poetry. In doing so, we don’t believe we have compromised the integrity of the origi-
nal extracts, only enhanced their value as language tools.
