I never saw another butterfly…

This activity is designed to remember and honor the many children who lived and died under
terrible conditions in the Terezin Ghetto. As we read the poetic works of some of these children,
we will examine some of their hopes, dreams and fears in an attempt to understand what they had
to experience. The butterflies you create will represent the souls of a small portion of the 15,000
children that passed through the gates of Terezin.

Butterfly Requirement:
You will create a butterfly that represents the author of your assigned poem. Your butterfly must meet the
following requirements:
□ It must be no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches.
□ Your butterfly can be created using any supplies you wish with the exception of glitter.
□ Your poem must be incorporated into your design, and displayed on your butterfly.
□ The name of the author of your poem must also be displayed on your butterfly.

Written Requirement:
Along with your butterfly you will also turn in a written response. Your response should be written in
complete sentences and provide evidence from the text to support your answers. Your response should
address ALL of the following questions:

□ What experiences do you think caused the author to write this poem?
□ What is the poem referring to? What is the poem about?
□ How does this poem make you feel?
□ Where in the poem do you see evidence of the authors hopes, dreams, and fears?
