“STORM WARNING” POISED TO FIND NEW AUDIENCE

(NewsUSA) - Billy Graham, an iconic spiritual advisor who has preached to more people around the world than any other religious leader in history, sees warning signs in current events. “Depression today not only describes the hard economic state of affairs sweeping our world but the human state of mind,” writes Graham. “I see this unfolding phenomenon as one of the many storm clouds hovering over a lost and dying world.”

To help people weather today ’s economic and cultural climate, Graham has completely revised his book “Storm Warning” which was originally written and published in 1992, in response to the fall of Communism and the Gulf War.

“Trouble brewing in the Middle East especially heightened interest in what the Bible had to say about the end days,” Graham writes. “People began to wonder if there might really be something to the ancient prophecies spoken by God’s prophets, and confirmed by His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

This new edition of “Storm Warning” offers Graham’s perspective on the post-9/11 world. “We felt that in light of recent developments since 9/11 it might be helpful to reprint the book, bringing it up to date since the turn of the centur y,” writes Graham’s son, Franklin, in the book’s foreword.

The book looks at current events and how they relate to Biblical

prophecy, especially a small part of the book of Revelations. “Scripture speaks of earthquakes, wars, and rumors of wars, and warns us with urgency to prepare for the storms

to come,” writes Graham.

God may bring storms, Graham posits, but He also offers shelter. “Just as a laser pen helps focus attention on vital aspects of a business presentation, in this book, I hope to use God’s Word -; His laser beam -- to shed light on His revealed plan to save the human race from the explosive clouds rumbling through our world.”

REMUS AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTS VETERANS LUNCHEON

REMUS — Honoring this nation’s veterans is honoring its history,

a fact the Remus Area Historical

Society does not overlook. The historical society is hosting an “Honor Our Veterans” luncheon and historical display at noon on Nov. 6 at the Remus Town Hall, located at 201 South Sheridan in Remus. The spaghetti luncheon is free

to the public but donations are

welcomed and encouraged. There

is a discussion and sharing of

wartime memories and stories immediately following the lunch. Reservations are appreciated. Anyone who has items or photos that demonstrate contributions made by our local veterans, please contact Gary Cox at (989) 561- 2848 or Mary Simon (989) 561- 2768 prior to that day.

WISE WORKS TO EDUCATE DURING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

BIG RAPIDS — In any given room

you might enter, one in four of the women you encounter has been

a victim of domestic violence,

according to the National Network to End Domestic Violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Diane Sawchuk, the Mecosta County Domestic Violence Coordinator at Women’s Information Service’s, Inc., or WISE, is working throughout the month to raise awareness about the scary abuse statistics she says many people don’t think apply to small towns like Big Rapids. “People don’t think it exists in Big Rapids,” she said. “We live in this

perfect little town and a lot of people think it doesn’t exist. So it’s good to bring the discussion out into the public so they can recognize the signs of domestic violence.” WISE, Big Rapids’ 21-bed shelter for survivors of domestic violence from Mecosta, Osceola and Newaygo counties, has been filled to capacity throughout 2010, Sawchuk said. WISE employees have been visiting area businesses and organizations to give speeches

on how to spot abuse victims and

get them the help they need. Sawchuk said a woman who is in a

domestic violence situation is often someone who suffers from low self- esteem, has a hard time making decisions and makes excuses for her partner’s behavior. She also might try to deflect attention from bruises or other physical injuries

by claiming she’s “clumsy.”

Elizabeth McCann, the Newaygo County Domestic Violence Coordinator at WISE, said speaking to the public about domestic violence and sexual assault issues might help victims WISE doesn’t encounter by empowering others in the community to help.

“(We’re) trying to change as many people’s mind as possible to better help the domestic violence victims that we don’t know, the sexual assault victims we don’t know,” McCann said. “If some one else has heard what I said and they meet somebody who could be a potential victim in the community. maybe they will have a little more empathy after they hear me speak.” On average, abuse victims will return to an abusive partner 10 times before deciding to leave for good, which is something that most people can’t understand, McCann said. Social stigmas about receiving government benefits such as the bridge card can leave victims feeling like there is no other option but to return to a bad home situation. “Victims run into all these barriers every single day,” she said. “So when you ask a victim, ‘Why do you stay?’ she might think, ‘Where else am I supposed to go?’” Sawchuk, a domestic violence survivor, said many victims fear leaving the financial security an otherwise abusive relationship might provide. But like many victims who are able to break the chains, Sawchuk said she experienced an overwhelming sense of freedom when she left for the last time. “I left a five bedroom farm house on 15 acres,” Sawchuck said. “I was living in a 30-year-old trailer, going to school, and I felt better than when I was living in a $180,000 home because I had freedom, I had independence and I wasn’t scared anymore.” If you would like more information about domestic violence, adult sexual assault or volunteer opportunities at WISE, call (231)

KEEP PESTS FROM CRASHING YOUR HOLIDAYS

(NewsUSA) - For many Americans, colder weather means seasonal decorations and holiday baking -; but if you’re one of those who set out gourds and holly or cookies for Santa, you might be opening your home to some unwanted guests.

“Mice, rodents, spiders and other pests find their way into homes by hiding in boxes of holiday decorations that have been stored in attics, basements and garages since last season,” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). “They create homes in these undisturbed items and then find new places to infest once these boxes are moved into family living quarters.”

The holiday season may also bring out pantry pests, which make themselves at home in pantry foods like flour, cereal, dry pasta, spices, nuts and dried fruit, as well as in decorations made from dried flowers and potpourri. The most common pantry pests are beetles, ants, weevils and Indian meal moths.

So, what can you do to deter unwelcome holiday guests? The NPMA offers the following tips:

* Store seasonal decorations in

airtight containers. Items like dried foliage, potpourri and Indian corn should be carefully stored in the off-season. Keep them in a dry environment, such as a closet or

office, and unpack them outside.

* Inspect fresh decorations before

you bring them indoors. Look over

wreaths, Christmas trees and garlands to make sure you’re not bringing insects into your home.

* Store food properly. All food

should be stored in plastic or glass containers with sealed lids. Keep cabinets, pantries and countertops clean and free of crumbs.

* Examine pantry items before

you use them. Check packages before you bring them home from the store. Never buy any item that appears damaged. Throw out expired ingredients. If you have any ingredients that haven’t been used in the past year, inspect them before use.

If you do find pests, contact a pest professional. They will know the best way to treat an infestation. For more information on preventing pests from crashing your home this holiday season or to find a licensed pest professional, visit www.pestworld.org.

MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT: IT’S TIME TO REVIEW YOUR PLAN

(NewsUSA) - Every year, there are new prescription drug and health plan coverage choices available to people with Medicare. Open Enrollment is the time of year when current or newly eligible Medicare beneficiaries, including people with original Medicare, can review their current health or prescription drug plans, compare the plans to other options and choose the plans that best meet their current needs.

There’s never been a better time to check out Medicare coverage. With the new health care law, there are new benefits available

Routine maintenance is critical to
your safety. For example, under-

of tire failures and can adversely

After switching off your cell phone,

drivers set their mirrors to reflect
