Artifact: Technology Paper

Technology Standard 4- Social, Ethical, and Human Issues

The competent teacher will apply concepts and skills in making decisions

concerning the social, ethical, and human issues related to computing and

technology. The competent teacher will understand the changes in information

technologies, their effects on workplace and society, their potential to address

life-long learning and workplace needs, and the consequences of misuse.

knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own

words.

I think this standard wants me to recognize that the world of technology is

rapidly changing. In order to be a competent teacher, I must recognize and understand

any changes that occur and be able to appropriately implement them into my

classroom. There is a variety of different resources that technology, the Internet in

particular, provides and I must make sure that everything I use appears in a manner

that is ethical and that is sensitive to the environment of my classroom. I will

understand that if used properly, technology can be used to greatly enhance the

efficiency of the workplace and will better prepare my students with successful tools

for society. However, for as many positives that technology resources can provide, I

must recognize that it can be misused and the effects could be harmful on my

students. Therefore, I must make sure that I everything I use comes from a reliable

source. I also must make it a priority to ensure that all of students are using the
technology provided in the classroom for strictly academic purposes.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and

application of the standard.

The artifact I used for this standard, the Technology Paper, demonstrates my

knowledge of certain knowledge indicators within the standard. Knowledge Indicator

4A states, “the competent teacher understands the social, ethical, and human issues

related to computing and technology”. For my paper, I chose the topic of

“cyberbullying”. By researching and understanding this topic, I am demonstrating that

I understand the social, ethical, and human issues that technology presents. I

recognize that technology as a medium provides students with the opportunity to

harass one another. This is an issue that is related strictly based off the use of the

technology. This artifact also demonstrates my knowledge of the Performance

Indicator 4C which states, “the competent teacher describes strategies for facilitating

consideration of ethical, legal, and human issues involving school purchasing and

policy decisions.” In my paper, I talk about how parents should work with schools to

increase their knowledge of the different mediums of technology and how they are

used in cyberbullying. I also suggest different school policies such as Internet

permission forms and limited Internet access in order to try to prevent cyberbullying

within school grounds.

upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

My teaching will be impacted by this assignment by making me recognize that

I must make a conscious effort to reduce cyberbullying within my jurisdiction; school

grounds. I will make every effort to make sure that students stay on-task when they

are allowed to use computers or any other technology resource. I also will make it a

point to talk to my administration about their policies regarding cyberbullying and to

make sure that information regarding this issue is included in teaching training

materials. Additionally, I will try to serve as a mentor for students who approach me

about being victim to cyberbullying. Clear communication lines between parents and

myself will also be a crucial resource in preventing this problem.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and

Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

I am more prepared to teach and learn in a diverse society as a result of

satisfactorily meeting this standard because technology serves as a neutral medium

that can appeal to the diverse environment of any classroom. I believe that if I remain

current with the changes in technology then I will be more prepared to learn from my

students as well convey important information that will help them become successful

members of society. Technology will always serve as a valuable tool to aid in my

understanding of the various backgrounds of my students. Therefore it is vital that

stay current with the changes and use the technology in an appropriate manner.
