Materials for Specific Countries

• Economist Intelligence Unit: Country Profiles. Available through the Berkeley Library website. Do not
confuse the Country with the Country
• You will find books on the history of most Latin American countries in the UC Berkeley Library, eg.
the Palgrave Macmillan “Short History of Argentina”, etc.
Books with Chapters on Specific countries:
Skidmore and Smith: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and brief chapters on
Caribbean and Central American countries
Williamson: Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Chile
Kline and Wiarda: Chapters on the Political Systems of the following countries, which provide useful
background material: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay,
Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras,
The Dominican Republic, Panama and Haiti.
Clifford Krauss: Inside Central America: Its People, Politics and History (1991). This book is not as up
to date, but provides useful background information on countries about which less has been
written: Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama.
For your ipods: George Pendle: A history of Latin America. 1965.
One of my personal favourites. Downloadable as an audiobook. This book (if you ignore its
Spanish mispronunciations) is a classic. Extremely well written, the story it tells of individual
Latin American countries is fascinating and full of lively anecdotes, and will provide you with
an entertaining account of the continent. At least as entertaining is the fact that it was written
in the days before political correctness. It expresses all the prejudices of its age with regard to
Latin America freely, which will help you understand how the continent was viewed by its
northern conquerors, colonialists, trading partners and neighbours. Thus, from a
historiographical point of view, it will give you invaluable insights into how and why the
continent developed in its own particular way.
