Quizlet

I have found that any time students are able to use technology for an activity they quickly
become engaged. I found the website Quizlet several years ago, and I love to introduce my
students to it every year! It is a great website for reviewing. Quizlet can be used among many
subjects.

Quizlet is a website that allows students to make flashcards for any subject. I love using it in the
math classroom. Students are able to create their own flashcards, or review sets of flashcards
that their classmates have created. It is easy to add a student to you Quizlet account and
monitor their review progress! Students are also able to review on their phones and iPads using
the Quizlet app.

Subject area/course/grade level: Math/Essentials for College Math/12th Grade

Materials: Computer, Quizlet App

Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students):

STATE Standards:
F.1: Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is th
set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.
F.3: Interpret the equation y=mx+b as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of
functions that are not linear.
A.5: Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on
coordinate axes with labels and scales.

ISTE Standards for Students:

1. Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in th
learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
3a: Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits.
3c: Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of
artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
3d: Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories
and pursuing answers and solutions.
4: Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new,
useful, or imaginative solutions.

Objectives: Students will look at examples and non-examples of functions by comparing graphs, tables, maps an
equations. They will look more closely at linear and nonlinear functions. Students will explore proportional
relationships and mathematical terms associated with them such as independent and dependent variables, unit ra
and slope. Students will be asked to identify and describe key features and characteristics of linear functions in the
form of an equation and graphically.

Differentiation Strategies (How will the lesson address the various learning styles of the students and the
needs of those with special needs?):
ENGAGEMENT:

To engage students, I asked them how they would like to be the creators of their next test. Of course the
loved the thought of being able to pick what questions go on their test. I explained that they will be
reviewing for their test using the application, Quizlet. Form the flashcards that are made for review, I will
picking their review questions to make their test
EXPLORATION:

Students were required to create 20 flashcards with definitions and examples of functions and non-
functions. These flashcards had to be created on Quizlet and added to the class that I created on Quizle
Students had the option of using the notes as examples or using the internet to help them come up with
their questions. After creating their flashcards, it was required that each student reviewed three other
student’s set of flashcards.

Assessment
Through Quizlet, I am able to see students’ sets of flashcards. I can also whose flashcards they have
reviewed. This part of the lesson was graded on participation.
EXPLANATION/ELABORATION:

This stage of the lesson is your part. You will cover vocabulary, concepts, ideas – whatever is necessary
to help the students understand the lesson. Include higher order thinking questions to help the students
connect and comprehend the point of the lesson. Provide specific details of your explanation phase.
Include hyperlinks or screen shots to videos, web resources, or mobile applications. Also, include any
presentations or documents used. You are not required to use technology for the explanation phase, bu
may choose to do so.

Assessment

EVALUATION:

For the student assessment on this lesson, I created a test that consisted of student’s questions from the
flashcards on Quizlet. Since there are 28 students in the class, each student had 28 sets of questions to
review. Having known their questions were going to come from their flashcards, students made sure to
review everyone’s sets. When I went back to review who had study, 50% of the class had reviewed all 2
sets.
