Blazing Trails
The Corps of Engineers in Fort Peck got a cross
country ski trail groomer delivered late last week
and trails are now ready for use! Ski enthusiasts can
access the trail from Kiwanis Park. Remember to dress
for the weather and protect yourself from frostbite in
these cold temperatures and wind.
In other Corps happenings, there is a new Fort Peck ice
access site at the Pines Recreation Area. A designated
ice access trail has been established through what was
formerly known as the Pines Youth Camp. Properly
licensed or registered motorized vehicles, including

snowmobiles and off-highway vehicles (OHVs), may
access the ice using the designated, signed trail. All
other off-road travel is prohibited on Corps lands. This
prohibition includes driving along the shoreline of Fort
Peck Lake between the frozen lake and the high water
mark except for the purpose of navigating around an
ice pressure ridge or open water by the shortest route,
not to exceed 1/8 mile. At this time, the former Pines
Youth Camp is open for motorized ice access only, but
may be opened for additional recreational activities in
the future. Walk-in use is welcome any time of year.

Wowsers, these Arctic temperatures are extending
well into March, and we’re talking bone-chillin’ cold!
Our warmest day in the 10-day forecast is this Thursday,
looking to be a high of 13.
Through Thursday, March 7th, we’re still looking at
lows of -5 degrees. When’s that sun going to take a bite
out of crime...
And according to the Farmers’ Almanac, we could
be going out like a lion as well:

like conditions. Rockies: Very snowy, cold.
• 4th-7th — Another storm brings rapid changes in
temperatures, precipitation.

• 16th-19th — Late-winter storm over Central Plains
brings heavy snow, except for parts of Kansas,
Missouri, which see mostly rain.
• 20th-23rd — Clear, cold Rockies.
• 24th-27th — Storm moves east from Wyoming,
bringing snow to Montana, Minnesota, Dakotas, a
mix of snow, sleet, rain everywhere else.

Montana plane crash
survivor checks in

The Montana man who survived a
Florida plane crash is giving credit to the
heroic neighbors who came to his aid.
Tim Sheehy is a Navy SEAL and Bozeman,
Montana businessman who previously
received the Purple Heart, among other
decorations.
Authorities say the flight instructor
was killed when his small plane lost
power and crashed into a Florida home.
James Wagner was in the twin-engine
plane with Sheehy when the plane crashed
into a home near Winter Haven Regional
Airport on Saturday. Sheehy has 20 years
of experience as a pilot. He says Wagner

SHEEHY: “He and the neighborhood
folks deserve credit for their selfless acts of
bravery immediately after the crash. With
a fire imminent they were courageous in
their acts.”
Polk County Sheriff ’s officials say the
64-year-old pilot died in the crash. The
plane landed near a bedroom, pinning a
17-year-old girl inside against a wall and
leaving her with minor injuries. Sheely
also had minor injuries. Several others at
the home, including three children, were
not injured.
Sheehy is the CEO of Ascent Vision
Technologies and Bridger Aerospace in
Belgrade. He’s also a graduate of the US
Naval Academy who completed Army
Ranger training in addition to becoming
a SEAL.
SHEEHY: “It was a rough day
but could have been much worse. Just
thankful there weren’t more people in the
home.”

to find what food is available, many animals are at their
most vulnerable. In addition, this has been a snowy and
