Introduction

My name is Wesley Jody Vermeulen, I am a MCSD student at CTU Training Solutions. In this activity I
have been asked to do research on a few topics, which I will discuss in the following.
History of the internet & Development of the world-wide-web
(www.whoishostingthis.com, n.d.)

Electronic computers started in the 1950s. The first satellite was launched into orbit by the Soviet
Union in 1957. The satellite was known as Sputnik, and only sent blips and bleeps from its radio
transmitters as it circled around Earth. America started taking science and technology more
seriously, and invested in scientific research and development. They started new agencies such
as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Department of
Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), to develop technologies for outer
space, such as rockets, weapons and computers.
America feared that all telephone lines that made long distance communication possible, would
be destroyed in the Soviet attack. Therefore, America discovered a way to send information from
one computer to another, which was called packet switching. This method known as “packet
switching” breaks data into small blocks, or packets before sending it to its destination. Without
packet switching, ARPAnet would have been more vulnerable to attacks.
As time progressed, only four computers were connected to ARPAnet, by the end of 1969. After
the 1970s it started growing, universities across Hawaii (ALOHAnet), London and Radar
systems across Norway. Aside from the success, a problem aroused, it became more difficult to
integrate into a single worldwide “internet”. A computer scientist by the name of Vinton Cerf
found a solution to this problem, by developing a way for all computers on all world’s mini-
networks to communicate with one another, by the end of the 1970s. He named it “Transmission
Control Protocol” or TCP. Later he added an additional protocol called TCP/IP.
Cerf’s invention transformed the internet into a worldwide network, throughout the 1980s. Not
long after, a computer programmer in Switzerland named Tim Berners-Lee introduced the World
Wide Web. It enabled users to send files from one place to another but was itself a ‘’web’’ of
information that anyone on the internet could receive. Berners-Lee created the Internet that we
know today.

Physical context of web pages

(answers, n.d.)

The physical context of a page refers to the area around something and determines how the user
interprets it.

Intranet environment
(iplocation, n.d.)

The intranet environment consists of a internal/private network with limited access for
authorized users. It can basically be seen as the backend network of the internet.

1
Extranet environment
(study, n.d.)

Extranet environment refers to the transmission of communication via TCP/IP. Access to the
extranet is restricted via login system that requires the user’s necessary credentials.

2
Conclusion

In this research assignment I have gained more knowledge about the history of the internet and
where it was born. Not only have I learned about the origin about the internet but as well as the
different types of networks and the physical context of web pages.
