Introduction and Statement of Purpose: ​(might need two paragraphs)

The American Diabetes Association reports that 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed

with diabetes every year, out of this a study by the Mayo Clinic indicates that a majority of these

diabetics, specifically those with Type 2 diabetes, are children. While doctors and researchers

have yet to reach an official conclusion, the Mayo Clinic suggests that the increase is caused by

the obesity epidemic. As pictured below in the information graphic detailing the epidemic of

Type 2 Diabetes in Children.

To combat this increase, I will conduct detailed research on what genetic and

environmental factors make a child most susceptible to diabetes and compare them to children

without diabetes. I plan to approach endocrinologists and pediatricians to discuss my original

work and their experience with young patients diagnosed with diabetes, so I can better

understand the process of diagnosing these individuals and the opinion of medical experts. From
this research, I hope to derive the causes and methods of prevention of diabetes in children. I will

use this information to synthesize a research report on this phenomenon to promote awareness of

diabetes in children and approaches to lead a healthier lifestyle. In addition, I plan to organize

presentations and promotional materials, such as brochures, for young children attending local

elementary and middle schools to educate them on healthy habits and other prevention methods.

By achieving this, I will be effectively utilizing the skills I have learned in ISM thus far, as it will

require me to collaborate with healthcare professionals, including my mentor, conduct in-depth

research, and create presentations.

I hope to create awareness of the prevalence of diabetes in children, as the long term

consequences of diabetes are potentially disabling or life-threatening, as pictured in the graph

below-detailing complications that children with diabetes develop. My research will shine a light

on this topic within my community and serve as an easy to understand guide for parents and

other individuals interested in educating themselves on diabetes in children.

Review of Research and Skills:

As part of my original work, I will have to intensively research pediatric endocrinology,

specifically type 2 diabetes. Previously, my research has been focused on general pediatrics,

however, going forward I will prioritize researching and understanding the complexities of

childhood diabetes. Within this, I will focus on the following areas;

1. The causes of diabetes, this includes genetic predisposition and environmental

influences.

2. The reason behind the recent uprise in diabetes in children, since this uprise is

concentrated in the United States, I will research other nations to derive

differences in lifestyle and genetics.

3. Preventative measures, I will primarily study nutritional data and reports on

physical activity to verify my belief that a healthy diet and exercise is truly the

best method to avoid a diabetes diagnosis.

Since entering the ISM program, I am significantly improving my professional skills and

learning how to conduct in-depth research and analysis. To bring my original work to reality, I

will have to continue to develop and utilize these skills, considering I will have to collaborate

with multiple healthcare professionals to better understand their perspective on this epidemic. I

will also be required to pursue research on the topic, specifically on the topics mentioned above.

Methodology

To bring my original work to completion I will accomplish the following;

1. Begin general research on type 2 diabetes in children and synthesize an updated contact

list of local endocrinologists with my mentor, Dr. Thomas, so I can better understand the
 process of diagnosing type 2 diabetes in children and current treatments (FDA approved

and experimental ones).

2. Pending Mr.Pirtle’s approval, I will secure an endocrinologist as a second mentor to

guide me in this process. While I am currently enjoying mentoring with Dr. Thomas, a

general pediatrician, I believe working closely with both an endocrinologist and a

pediatrician will significantly strengthen my original work.

3. Combine the research and experience I have gathered from my mentor(s), by beginning

writing my research report on type 2 diabetes in children.

4. Although my research will most directly benefit those in my community due to

proximity, I plan to further spread my influence by publishing my work. At this time I am

unsure of the best option for publishing my research, however, I am currently considering

self-publishing through Amazon.

5. Once I have begun the publication process, I will design and produce promotional

materials in the form of brochures and potentially a website to pass out. The purpose of

this is to provide everyday people an easy to understand information about type 2

diabetes in children.

6. I will coordinate with local elementary and middle schools to organize an opportunity for

me to inform students about type 2 diabetes and how they can live a healthy lifestyle.

Materials

Considering my original work primarily revolves around research and collaboration with

healthcare professionals, I will not require multiple tangible materials. However, to complete my

original work I will need the following materials;

2. Trifold - To be used in presentations at elementary and middle schools to engage children

3. Brochures - To be passed out at assemblies with young children, curious parents, and

for 200 copies)

4. Questions - This is not a material that I will purchase, rather I will compose a list of

questions to ask endocrinologists during interviews in regards to my original work. Some

of which are;

a. How many children do you see with diabetes on a weekly basis?

b. Of those, is it more common for these children to be diagnosed with type 1 or

type 2 diabetes?

c. What do you personally believe is the cause of the increase in children with

diabetes?

d. What steps do you recommend children and parents take to combat type 2

diabetes? Do you recommend lifestyle changes, including a healthier diet and

more exercise?

e. Do you think American cafeteria school lunches and store-bought lunches play a

role in making children more prone to diabetes?

f. Do you think that the sugary cereals and other food products that are marketed to

children make this demographic more susceptible to diabetes?

Conclusions

The purpose of my original work is to promote awareness of the prevalence of childhood

type 2 diabetes in the United States. I believe that I the best method to combat all illnesses is

through a healthy lifestyle, consisting of a balanced nutritional diet and adequate exercise.

Regardless of the validity of my hypothesis, I will publish the findings of my research and ensure

that I promote awareness of the causes of this illness and prevention methods.

I believe that my research report can be best utilized by healthcare professionals and

other adults interested in this topic; however, my presentations and brochures will directly help

children and parents make healthier life choices. As mentioned earlier, I believe that my efforts

will be best recognized within my community due to my proximity. However, with the

publication of my work and personal efforts I will try to amplify my findings so they can benefit

all Americans.
