Teacher: Alex Schiavoni Unit Title: Unit 4 Module 4 Session 3

Date & Time: 2/5 - 9am Group: Whole Group

Grade Level: 3 Lesson Title: Beanstalk Leaf Line Plots

Objectives:

1. Students will be able to make a line plot to show measurement data, with a horizontal
scale marked in quarter inches

Purpose
This lesson is important for students to practice organizing and analyzing data after
gathering it. They will be able to visually see the class data in the form of a line plot to
better understand the information that they collected.

Materials/Resources Needed:
 Beanstalk Leaf Line Plot
 Beanstalks from previous lesson

Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)

 Discuss leaves on Line plot
o Now that we collected data about our beanstalks and made a line plot of
how far up Jim climbed our beanstalks, I am wondering about the leaves on
our beanstalks and if we can learn something about all the different leaves
you drew
o What do you notice about my leaves. (Some are longer, about 3in or more)
o I wonder how many were close to 3 inches and how many were smaller or
larger. How could we figure that out? By counting, list, line plot
o How did we record our data yesterday? What did the line plot tell us?
o We are going to make another line plot to keep track of the different
measurements

Model (10 minutes)

 Put “Beanstalk Leaf Line Plot” under the doc cam
o What do you observe about this sheet?
o There are enough spaces for you to record up to 30 lengths of your leaves
o The intervals on the horizontal axis of the line plot are in quarter-inches to
represent all the possible lengths of leaves you used in your own beanstalk
 I am going to model this by showing you how I enter my data into the chart
 After I write the measurement of the leaf in the table, I am going to put a
checkmark next to that leaf so I know I recorded it
o We are going to record the length of every leaf even if they repeat
 Now we are going to put the data into the line plot of the bottom half of the sheet
 Now we are going to put these points of data on our line plot
o I will place an X in the place on the line plot where my data points fall
o Once I plot the data point, I am going to gently cross it off in the table so I
know I plotted it
 What do you notice about my line plot? Review questions at the bottom of the sheet
so students understand instruction before moving on

Independent Practice (25 minutes)

 Now I want you to get with your Beanstalk partner and practice what I just modeled
 You will flip to this page in your student book and fill it out together
o Start with filling in the chart with all your measurements- make sure all of your
leaves are recorded
o Then you will put the data from your chart into the line plot- make sure all of
your leaves are recorded on the line plot (you should have as many Xs as you
have leaves)

Check for Understanding

During independent practice, I will walk around to check for understanding. I will answer
questions that students have and make note of students who need to be pulled for
additional support. Students will fill out an exit ticket after lesson is complete.

Math RTI (30 minutes)

Students will work in their work places for the remainder of Math RTI time. These are centers
that students rotate around to that pertain to the fraction unit. For homework, students will
complete the Time & Fraction Review Home Connection page.

Closure (5 minutes)
 A few groups of students will be able to come up and show their beanstalks and
explain their line plots
 How can you see that your line plot connects to your beanstalk?
 Tomorrow we will be taking the post-assessment so tonight’s Home Connection will
help you review some skills that you will need to show.
