SONOLINE Elegra Ultrasound Imaging System - Maintenance Instructions

1.0 Performing Planned Maintenance

1.1 Introduction
Planned maintenance is recurring and must be performed at least every 12 months.
Planned maintenance includes visual inspections, cleaning, and functional performance
checks of the system and its equipment.
After performing planned maintenance a Maintenance Report must be completed. The
Maintenance Report may be completed on-screen and saved on hard drive or floppy disk
for later use. It can also be printed prior to performing maintenance and filled out manually
at a later time.
A copy of the completed Maintenance Report must be provided to the customer and to the
Regional Service Office or Home Office, as appropriate to the region.
Some regions have regulations that require planned maintenance more frequently. It is the
responsibility of the Customer Service Engineer (CSE), formerly Field Service Engineer
(FSE), to be aware of and adhere to, all local regulations regarding planned maintenance
intervals for this system and its equipment.

1.2 Hints on Performing Planned Maintenance

If one of the checks fails, and depending on whether or not the customer has signed a “full”
service contract for the system, do the following:
„ If the customer has signed a “full” service contract:
• Do not check “Passed” in the checklist of the Maintenance Report, but repair the
defect and repeat the check. If it passes, check “Passed.”
„ If the customer has not signed a “full” service contract:
• If the customer asks you to repair the defect, perform the repair, and repeat the
check. If it passes, check “Passed” in the checklist of the Maintenance Report.
• If the customer does not want you to repair the defect, check “Failed,” and make a
note in the “Open Issues” section of the Maintenance Report.

NOTICE Always keep a copy of the completed Maintenance Report for your own records.

! WARNING When handling parts that may have had patient contact, take appropriate precautions
against exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

[PM] Discussing Customer Concerns

1. Discuss with the customer how the system has performed. Find out about the con-
cerns that the customer might have regarding the system. Fill out the appropriate sec-
tion of the Maintenance Report to document customer concerns and the actions taken
to resolve the issues.
2. Save the system preset data to a blank floppy disk.
3. Turn off the system (including the MAINS switch), and then disconnect the power cord
from the external main power source.

[PM] Cleaning the System

OEMs, etc.

4. Use a soft cloth, lightly moistened with a mild soap solution, to clean the surface of the
system, including the system control panel, trackball, transducer holders, system side
panels, and any on-board OEM peripheral devices. Refer to the operating instructions
for additional information on cleaning the system, transducers, etc.

! CAUTION Do not use alcohol or other organic solvents, or cleansing agents that contain alcohol or
other organic solvents. The touchscreen surface is very delicate. Clean it only when neces-
sary, and be very careful when cleaning it.

[PM] Cleaning and Inspecting Transducers

5. Clean each transducer with a soft cloth dampened with a mild soap solution.

6. Check the transducer heads for physical damage such as cracks, splits, air bubbles
(sector transducers), or any other malfunction that may affect their performance.
Inspect the cable and the connection at the strain relief on both ends of the cable.

! WARNING When using an endocavity or intraoperative transducer with a CF type applied part, the
patient leakage currents may be additive.

! WARNING The outer surfaces of an endocavity or intraoperative transducer should be checked to

ensure there are no unintended rough surfaces, sharp edges, or protrusions that may
cause a safety hazard.

7. Inspect all transducers and user accessible ports for damage, loose connectors, bent
pins, etc.

[PM] Cleaning Air Filters

8. Clean the card cage air filters (at the rear of the system).

1.6 Safety Checks

1. Make sure the system is turned off and the power cord is disconnected from the exter-
nal power source.

[SI] Checking Wheels and Wheel Locks

2. Check the wheels and wheel locks for any damage, and that they are working properly.

[SI] Checking Monitor and Monitor Arm

3. Check that the monitor is securely mounted on the monitor arm, and that the monitor
can be turned and tilted easily.
4. Check that the monitor arm can be turned easily, and that it locks firmly in its home
position.

[SI] Checking Cooling Fans

5. Turn on the system and check that the four (4) cooling fans are working properly.

[SI] Checking the Power Cord

6. Check the AC power cord for signs of wear, heating, or any other signs of malfunction
or damage. If any defects are found, replace the power cord, and note the reason for
replacement in the comments section of the Maintenance Report.

[SI] Checking Electrical Safety

7. Perform an electrical safety check. For detailed information refer to
ARTD-002.731.17.01.02 (or newer) and the document ”System Safety Test” in this
manual.
8. Check the back-end back plane P43 connector to identify potential failures.
The 6-pin connector carries approximately 50 A DC. Deterioration of this connection is
detected as an excessive voltage drop.

Inspection Procedure
1. Remove the left rear panel. You now have access to the distribution board.
2. Remove the lower left panel and the cover underneath it. You now have access to the
switching power supply.

! WARNING Exposed 115/230V AC terminals on the switching power supply under this cover are live.

3. Locate Test Point 3 (TP3) on the distribution board.

4. Locate the positive (upper) threaded stud (bolt) on switcher module A8.
This is the leftmost DC output pair. There are labels on top of the switcher. The module
is not visible from the side.
The positive stud is directly below the J10 fast-on connector on the terminal board.
The studs hold the terminal board in place with nuts and washers.
5. With the system running, measure the DC voltage between the positive A8 stud and
TP3, as well as between the negative A8 stud and TP1 (the ground).
Measurements below 125 mV are acceptable. However, if either measurement is greater
than 125 mV do the following:
6. Inspect the terminal board on the front of the switcher and the wires connected to A8.
Make certain that there are no signs of discoloration or melted insulation. If you find
any damage, replace the switcher assembly.
7. Shut the system down.
8. Unplug the P43 connector from the back-end back plane.
It separates easily when you squeeze the tangs. If the connector is hard to remove, it
may be damaged.
9. Inspect all six contacts.
The two leaves in the center must touch. No signs of discoloration or melted insulation
should be evident.
10. Repeat this process for connector P403 on the power conditioner board.
If you found no anomalies, reconnect P43 and P403, and turn on the power. Feel them
after ten minutes of operation. They should feel cool to the touch.
11. Repeat the voltage measurements.
If the voltage is greater than 125 mV, complete the PM and contact the nearest Uptime
Service Center immediately for further instructions.
