Position: Choir Conductor


Organization: Ottawa Children’s Choir (OCC)
Anticipated start date: July 2, 2017

The Ottawa Children’s Choir is planning a new training Choir for 6- and 7-year old children in the 2017-
2018 choral year. We are seeking a dynamic individual to fulfill the position of Choir Conductor. The
Choir Conductor is an independent contractor who is responsible for selecting, training, directing and
conducting the Choir. Specifically, the Choir Conductor will:

 Develop the new training Choir’s choral program in consultation with the OCC’s other
conductors and as directed by the Board of Directors of the OCC.
 Plan, implement, and evaluate the training Choir’s choral program through the year.
 Choose repertoire consistent with the artistic vision, goals and strategic plan of the OCC.
 Deliver the training Choir choral program, including the holding of weekly rehearsals and any
extra rehearsals that are necessary, with support from the General Manager, Choir Manager,
and Accompanist.
 Communicate on a regular basis with choristers, parents of choristers, and others, as required.
 Recommend music and other required supplies and equipment for purchase by the
organization.
 Conduct recruitment/selection processes in conjunction with the Chamber, Boys’, Concert and
Viva conductors and the General Manager.
 Appoint a choir manager and accompanist.
 Work collaboratively with the conductors of the Chamber, Concert, Viva and Boys’ choirs on
artistic matters.
 Report to the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Children’s Choir.
 Respond to possible requests regarding participation in community events consistent with the
overall choral strategy.

Required skills:
 Demonstrated passion for and experience with working as a choral educator and conductor of
children;
 Ability to evaluate appropriate repertoire and performance opportunities for children;
 Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other artistic staff and members of the broader
artistic community;
 Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a wide variety of stakeholders including
volunteers, parents, and a board of directors;
 Strong communication and interpersonal skills, flexibility and the ability to work as a member
of a team;
 Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent and music education background (primary years).

The following qualifications will be definite assets:


 Early childhood education diploma and experience.
 O.C.T. (Primary Education).

The Ottawa Children’s Choir (OCC) is a not-for-profit organization devoted to artistic excellence,
community connection and, above all, the joy of singing. The OCC currently provides a progressively
rigorous choral program for children from ages 8 through 15 in four choirs (Boys’, Viva, Concert and
Chamber), which includes musical training, rehearsals, performances, educational outreach,

The training Choir will perform in two OCC self-presented concerts per year (December and May).

 Please include with your application 2 sample concert programmes (one Christmas concert and
one Spring concert) of age-appropriate repertoire, each approximately 10 minutes in length.

If selected for an interview, candidates will be expected to provide references. Candidates who are
selected for an interview should be prepared to conduct a rehearsal of an OCC choir for the selection
panel.

Successful candidates must provide a current police check, including vulnerable sector screening.
