GRAPHIC DESIGN 2 OVERVIEW

I. Photoshop/Illustrator Review/FREE CHOICE PROJECT, 3 days

Students have 3 days to create the project of their choice using whatever tools and
techniques they remember from GD1. This project is meant to gauge what students
remember and are capable of doing from taking GD1.

II. Formal Photoshop Review/TOOL/TECHNIQUE PRESENTATIONS, 3 days

Students are paired together to review a tool, palette or filter in Photoshop and create a 5
minute lesson to teach the tool to the class.

III. Brush Palette, Create a Brush, Brush Effects/BRUSH COMPOSITIONS, 6 days

Students will explore how to find additional brushes online and how to manipulate and
change the brushes using the options in the Brushes palette. They will also learn how to
create their own brushes using the Edit menu. Finally, students will create several themed
brush compositions with limited colors that utilize layers, layer styles, and layer modes to
create depth and interest. Projects include a general brush composition and an
advertisement.

IV. Advanced Layers and Lighting/BELIEVABLE SPACE, 5 days

Students begin to see how composite images are created by creating a faux landscape (or
compostion of their choice) using images from multiple sources. Students review layers
styles and masks to create believable shadows and lighting effects.

V. Theme Collage/TRAVEL BROCHURE, 6 days

Using layer styles and modes, students will create the cover for a dynamic travel brochure
with images, brushes and specific destination information.

VI. Advanced Typography/TEXT TUTORIAL, 4 days

Students will search online for a type tutorial to follow to create a specific kind of text (under
water, fractured, etc.) and follow the tutorial to create a type with a specific look.

VII. Advanced Image Montage/CHARACTER MOVIE POSTER, 10 days

Using layer masking, students will create the main character for an upcoming movie and
then complete the movie poster advertisement for the film. To complete the work, students
will create a text logo for the film following a second text tutorial.

VIII. Photoshop Review/CHOICE PROJECT, 3 days

Students get the opportunity to create a second project of their choice that emulates a
digital design they they find online. Students will create a series of ‘requirements’ for the
project as if they were teaching it to another student or class.

IX. Illustrator Review/PEN TRACE AND MESH, 4 days

Students search for a simple object online to trace with the pen tool. Gradient creation is
reviewed and students are introduced to the mesh tool to add color detail.

2
X. Illustrator Review Cont/SYMBOLS AND LIVE TRACE, 2 days
Review symbol modification and alteration as well as live trace via the creation of a logo as a
class.

XI. Text and Information Layout/INFOGRAPHIC, 6 days

After looking at the popularity of infographics, students will create an illustrated diagram by
tracing images, modifying existing Illustrator symbols, or live tracing clip art from the
internet and combining that imagery with factual information.

XII. Concept Design/FOOD TRUCK CHALLENGE, 12 days

Designed as a cross curricular culminating project, students will work in groups to design all
aspects of a food truck including the logo, marketing materials (truck and packaging
designs), and menu. Photo classes will shoot photos for the menu and MGA students will
develop a commercial in AE. At the completion of the project students will create a
presentation board to introduce their concept to the class. Project could be paired with an
investigative field trip visiting food truck sites downtown Chicago.

XIII. Alternate Concept Design/RETAIL CONCEPT, 9 days

In this version of the concept design, students create a logo for a brand (service, product or
place) and then create several marketing materials to illustrate their branding. At the
completion of the project students will create a presentation board to introduce their
concept to the class.

XIV. Final Exam Review, 4 days

Students will reinvestigate each program to prepare for the final exam.
