1 Introduction
Purpose
This user manual serves to ensure the proper use of the HVA ControlCenter, a
program designed for the management of VLF High Voltage test instruments of the
types HVA28, HVA34, HVA30-5, HVA60, HVA90 and further units of the HVA
Family. The HVA ControlCenter communicates with a HVA test instrument through
an USB-RS232 Cable or via Bluetooth (HVA28).
For details on a HVA test instrument please refer to the respective user manual
Safety
NOTICE
When you work with the HVA ControlCenter, the manual of the respective HVA
test instrument should always be on hand.

2 Installation
For installation, insert the HVA ControlCenter CD or the USB Memory Stick
included in your standard accessories and follow the instructions displayed on the
screen. To manually start the installation go to the CD/USB Folder and run the
program called “HVA ControlCenter Setup.exe”.
System Requirements
PC or Notebook with Microsoft Windows® XP, Vista or 7.
Since Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft we recommend to use
Windows 7 for best compatibility
Step 1.)
Unscrew the USB flash adapter from the RS232 socket of the HVA. As next, you
need to disable the USB flash adapter in the menu of the HVA.
Go to: Reports & Setup--> Instrument Settings --> USB flash: no
By clicking on the encoder wheel you change the setting.
Set it to No and go back to the main menu
Step 2.)
Once the USB flash adapter is disabled you need to connect the HVA with the PC.
To connect the HVA to the PC you need to connect the cable KEK0017, Cable
serial DB9 f/f Link, to the RS232 socket of the HVA.
At the end of the cable KEK0017 you need to connect the adapter KEK0049, USB-
RS232 Adapter. And finally you need to connect the USB plug to your PC.
When the USB cable is connected the driver should be installed automatically.
After the unit gets a COM port the driver is installed and the HVA is connected
properly (This could be also checked in the Device Manager of Windows). You can
start the HVA ControlCenter.

Current (lr.)
Term Explanation
Arc Self-maintained gas conduction for which most of the charge carriers are
electrons supplied by primary‑electron emission (source: IEC)
Auto Adjust Mode that maximizes output frequency to highest allowable value
Frequency • Greatest allowable frequency depends on the test load and test voltage
“0.1 Hz/Auto” applied
• For loads greater than 1µF, the instrument automatically reduces the
frequency
DUT Device under test
Duty (continuous) Load state in which the relay remains energized for a period long enough to
reach thermal equilibrium
Fault An unplanned occurrence or defect in an item which may result in one or more
failures of the item itself or of other associated equipment (source: IEC)
Frequency [Hz] Number of cycles per unit of time: f = 1/period (time), units = Hz
1 Hz = 1cycle/1 second
0.1 Hz = 1cycle/10 seconds, etc.
Hipot High potential (voltage)
HV High Voltage (tension)
• Extremely high voltage: typically 220 kV or 380 kV
• High voltage: typically 110 kV
IEC International Electrotechnical Commission
Peak value Maximum voltage = Vmax V Vmax
RMS value Root mean square voltage Vrms
To short Forcing the electric potential differences between two or more conductive
parts to be equal to or close to zero
(Infinite current flows in a short circuit)
To trip Opening the circuit
(no current flows in open circuit)
VLF Very low frequency
• Typically between 0.01-0.1 Hz
