ELA Standards: Alabama State Standards

 37. Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when
writing or speaking. [L.1.1] a. Print all uppercase and lowercase letters. [L.1.1a] b. Use common,
proper, and possessive nouns. [L.1.1b] c. Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in
basic sentences (e.g., He hops; We hop). [L.1.1c]

Reading Standards for Literature: Alabama State Standards

 7. Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate
understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. [RL.2.7]

 10. Design original works using digital tools. Examples: tools—digital drawing tools, music software,
word processing software, digital cameras.

Objectives:
 Students will apply the writing process when creating their own ocean adventure stories.
 Students will be able to use common pronouns and possessive nouns when writing.
 Students will be able to use a word processing software.
 Students will be a to recall characters in the story.

Differentiation Strategies: Special need students can partner with another student. The students will be
given extra time to complete the activities if needed. I will walk around the classroom to give extra support if
needed.

 The teacher will read and discuss Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz
with the students.

 Students will then create their own ocean adventure stories. The teacher may provide a story
starter, such as "One day in the ocean..." As students work, teacher should provide assistance with
brainstorming and other parts of the writing process.

 Each student completes his/her rough draft, he/she should move to the computer and type a copy of
the story using word processing software.

 Students will use MS Paint or another graphics software; the students will then create an ocean
picture to illustrate the stories.

Activity:

 Students will complete the Kahoot! Activity together with a peer to answer the questions in the quiz
to recall the animals in the sea.

EXPLORATION:

Activity:
 Students will get in small groups will visit a web site associated with ocean adventure.
 Students will have different responsibility in their group such as a timer keeper, reporter, and
facilitator. The children will decide the job duties for each person in the group. Students will work
together and write their adventure of what they learn on paper.
 Then students will share out aloud something they learned by going on the ocean adventure.

 Students will use the computers to go onto the website link above. Once the children get on the
website, they will click on each adventure and get facts about the ocean.

 Students will use previous learning and play a game which will be a quick check to make sure the
students are familiar with all of the oceans around the world. The students will go to the website and
click on beginner level 1. The game will allow the students to hear the name of each ocean and drag
it to the correct place on the map. Students can work with a peer to play the game.

 Students will create their own their own ocean story using common pronouns within the writing
about the characters in the book. Students can retell or rewrite the story in the own ways and
conclusions.
 Students will use MS Paint to draw a picture of the cover of their book.
 Students will print the cover and word processing document
