1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of the Study
Cancer is now the biggest cause of death in the world, with the smallest survival rate after the
diagnosis (Mr.Vijay A.Gajdhane 1, Prof. Deshpande L.M. 2, 2014). Lung cancer is one of the
most common cancers in current days. The mortality rate due to lung cancer is very high.
Survival from the disease is difficult if it is not detected at the early stage. However early
lung cancer detection using image processing technique can increase the chance of people to
survive (Vipin Kumar Jain,Dr. Ritu Vijay).
The image processing technique used for image improvement in earlier detection
and treatment stages of lung cancer (Neha Panpaliya,Neha Tadas,Surabhi Bobade,Rewti
Aglawe,Akshay Gudadhe, 2015).
1.3. Objective
1.3.1. General objective
The general objective of the study is to identify the best image type for lung cancer detection
by evaluating their result in the image and to detect lung cancer using image processing
technique from different types of medical images (X-ray, CT scan, MRI and PET images).
1|Page
To reduce the time and cost required for various excessive Medical Tests.
To increase the accuracy and performance of Lung Cancer Detection System.
To use less number of attributes for detection of lung Cancer.
To provide early stage detection of lung cancer.
Helps different medical centers to use the best type of medical image that gives better
result for lung cancer detection by comparing different type of medical images
It will be used as input for the next researchers.
The research idea mainly will focuses on identifying the best image type for lung cancer
detection by evaluating their result in the image processing technique.
2. Literature review
2.1. Lung cancer in Ethiopia
As (Neha Panpaliya,Neha Tadas,Surabhi Bobade,Rewti Aglawe,Akshay Gudadhe,
2015)Lung cancer is one of the most dangerous cancer types in the Ethiopia as well as in the
world. These diseases can spread worldwide by uncontrolled cell growth in the tissues of the
have done a study to detect lung cancer on CT scan images by using various image processing
techniques taking CT scanned lung images of cancer patients from hospitals. However since their
image dataset is only CT scan images it doesn’t show the accurate variation that exists among the
different types of medical images for lung cancer detection using image processing. As (Vipin
Kumar Jain,Dr. Ritu Vijay)the researcher tries to detect lung caner from a MRI images by
comparing the intensity value of both the cancer infected flash image and normal flash image and they

found that in the cancer infected flash there is much variation in intensity values at many places while
the normal flash image don’t show any big variation in intensity values. However still this paper
doesn’t tell us the best image type for detection of cancer using image processing.
A technique which takes an image as input and returns an image as output after
processing it and used for image enhancement, feature detection, noise removal .
3.2. Methodology
In this research proposal, to get more accurate results the researcher divided this work into
the following six stages:
3|Page
1. Image capturing
Image capturing begins by taking a collection of normal and abnormal images (CT-
images, X-Ray images, MRI images and PET images) from different diagnostic
centers (Neha Panpaliya,Neha Tadas,Surabhi Bobade,Rewti Aglawe,Akshay
Gudadhe, 2015).
Image Preprocessing is a process used to reduce noise and prepare the images for further
steps. (Neelima Singh,A. Asuntha, 2016). In this stage, image smoothing is the first step
used for removing noise and high frequency parts from the image (Sayali Satish
Kanitkar,N. D. Thombare,S. S. Lokhande, 2015).Imageenhancement is the next part here
aims to improve the clarity of information (Neha Panpaliya,Neha Tadas,Surabhi
Bobade,Rewti Aglawe,Akshay Gudadhe, 2015)and interpretability of information in the
image to the human viewers (Ajil M V ,Sreeram S, 2015).
3. Image segmentation
This stage is the process of separating the lung parts from medical image
(Varalakshmi.K, 2013) and helps to partition the image into meaningful region and to
identify the relevant information from different images (Sayali Satish Kanitkar,N. D.
Thombare,S. S. Lokhande, 2015).
4. IMAGE EXTRACTION
This stage is an important stage that uses algorithms and different techniques to detect
and isolate various portions or shapes/features of a given image (Mr.Vijay A.Gajdhane 1,
Prof. Deshpande L.M. 2, 2014) and obtains the general features from segmented image
which gives indicators of normality or abnormality of images. (AL-TARAWNEH, 2012).
5. CLASSIFICATION
4|Page
This stage tries to classify lung cancer into different stages using learning models with
associated learning algorithms to analyze data and recognize patterns
6. Re-classification
This stage is the process of re-classifying old default software results to new standard lung
cancer result.
