The tool helps to explore other people’s experiences, perceptions, and values connected to their religious beliefs. It offers an opportunity to
experience and dive into real stories of people coming from different countries and having a different understanding of religions. The game supports
empathy and understanding among young people and breaks the stereotypes about religions and cultures.
Issues addressed:
● Inter-religious dialogue
● Values
● Different perceptions of religions
● Culture
Objectives
● to give participants an opportunity to learn more about other people’s beliefs through getting acquainted with their personal experiences and
perceptions of religion
● to promote empathy and understanding towards people of diverse religious and non-religious beliefs
● to evoke interest among participants towards learning about other religions/other perspectives on religion
Group Size: either 5 or 10 people
Time: 2-3 hours (1.5 hour for the game and 0.5 - 1 hour for debriefing and discussion).
Materials:
● Personal stories and questions divided into four categories:
The category “My Background” is dedicated to the background of the roles and helps to understand that at the end of the day, we are very similar
despite our religious differences and we go through similar things in life.
The category “My Beliefs” reveals personal perception of religions the roles identify themselves with and is meant to show how perceptions of the
same religion/belief can be different among people of the same religion.
The category “My Beliefs and Me” tell the story of how a person came to be a follower/stopped being a follower of a certain religion/why they hold a
certain position and view, as well as how they practice their beliefs and how their beliefs affect their life.
The category “My Beliefs and Others” is meant to tell the stories of struggle or misunderstanding based on religious beliefs and other values that
most of us have faced in our life.
● Pieces of paper and pens that participants can use to take notes.
Preparation:
● Select the stories/roles that you would like to use with your participants.
● Print out attachments on colorful paper. Cards from each story should preferably have their own color, so that it is easier for players to take
their card depending on the colour.
● Cut the cards, arrange them on the table depending on their color and put questions and roles separately.
Activity Description:
The core of the tool is the power of personal stories and belief that that we build true understanding and empathy for others through learning about
their feelings, experiences and values, something that is hard to see from the first sight. The tool helps to get to know people with various values and
beliefs who it might be difficult to meet and talk to otherwise, which makes it suitable for playing with groups with the lack of diversity of
perspectives on religion.
It shows how different people perceive, experience and live their religious beliefs/positions towards religion, their hopes and everyday struggles,
and what in their life has influenced their positions and beliefs. It attempts to show real faces of people behind religious labels.
The game focuses on people’s perceptions on religions rather than what “the true way of a certain religion is” with the goal to acknowledge that we
might perceive, interpret and understand the same things and the same religions differently.
Instructions:
1. Introduce the purpose of the game and that the game is based on the stories of real people who shared their experiences and thoughts with
the tool creators.
2. Ask participants to randomly pick up the first set of stories “My Background” or give stories to participants yourself to ensure, for example,
that they get a story of a person who holds beliefs that are different from theirs.
