Preface

A person, who has a big dream, is a person who lives in a reality. As we live and

experience what life is, we dream to have a better life and we believe that education is the

key.

This portfolio contains how I dream and work to become a future educator

someday. How I surpassed the challenges and changes that I face. How I was able to finish

the race until the end as a future educator.

My last three years in college is like a roller coaster, there’s up and down but I was

able to surpass it. But my last year in college was different from my previous years. It was

the most amazing and unforgettable years. During my practice teach I was able to meet

different pupils with different behaviour and beliefs. Yes it was hard at first, but if you love

what you are doing all things makes easier.

With this portfolio, I was given a chance to share to all of you of what and how my

journey as an education student starts and end. As how I was able to surpass all the

challenges that I faced. May this portfolio inspire and motivate you to become a future

educator.

My philosophy of teaching

We all know that education is one of the most

important tool in a progressive society. One of the reason

why I pursue this profession is I want to be part of every

individual’s success.

The goal of my teaching, and center of my teaching

philosophy is active learning. One of my ultimate objectives

in teaching is to guide and facilitate learning by helping them

to gain necessary skills and become active participants in

their own learning. I truly believe that knowledge gained

through active participation is knowledge that will stay with

an individual.

I will also use many different teaching strategies to

achieve my philosophy. I believe teaching is the most

important service I provide to my pupils because I am

helping to educate a generation to function knowledgeably in

a society.
My Story: Journey to becoming a teacher

A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a heart, teacher creates other

profession and teacher is a role model of nation. Without teacher our world become

nothing. Entering college life is not a joke. You need is to have patience, money to support

your needs, and of course the support from your family and love ones. It is a wasting of

time if you did not give your heart and life in that profession.

As an individual I’m dreaming to become a businesswoman when I’m in my

elementary and high school days. But when I finish my high school my parents decide my

course and that is the world of teaching. Suddenly my world become worst and my dreams

become nightmare.

As to start my journey at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College – MI with the

course of Bachelor of Elementary Education, my world change, lots of stress, struggles in

short, I want to give up. As the time pass after a few months I’ve met my friends and best

friends. We are in same situation because it’s also a parent’s choice, we share everything.

In that way I pursue this course and start to like and love. For my 4 years in this course I’ve

experience a lot especially observing in real life situation of teaching. I’ve met different

pupils and it make me realized that pupils call you a teacher is pleasure.

And now I really thankful for my parents because they knows best for me. This

coming March 2019 I hope I will graduate and I strive more to make my parents proud.

Being a teacher is not easy, it needs a long process and patience, but at the end you will not

regret because to share others is care.

We dream of Filipinos who
passionately love their country and
whose competencies and values
enable them to realize their full
potential and contribute meaningfully
to building the nation.
As a learner-centered public
institution, the Department of
Education continuously improves
itself to better serve its stakeholders.

To protect and promote the right of

every Filipino to quality, equitable,
culture based and complete basic
education:
Students learn in a child friendly,
gender sensitive, safe and motivating
environment Teachers facilitate learning
and constantly nurture every learner.
Administrators and staff, as stewards of
the institution, ensure an enabling and
supportive environment for effective
learning happen. Family, community
and other stakeholders are actively
engaged and share responsibility for
developing lifelong learners.

Objectives of Cooperating Scho

Actual Teaching

Teaching is a truly unique, incredible job. One with so many nuances that it can be hard to

really explain what it’s like to people who haven’t done it before. This profession need to go on the

process of training to develop themselves professionally in order to raise the standard of student

learning.

As I enter the gate of KCES-1 I feel nervous at the same time scared. I don’t know what to do.

Being on job training at Koronadal Central elementary School -1.We laugh, we get angry and

scared. We see the most amazing growth and success. But most of all we care. I enjoy helping

pupils to understand. The greatest reward is seeing the light bulb of understanding flicker on in the

brains of my students, when they finally understand and know the formulas of volume and surface

area of a solid figures.

Reflection of behaviour management within the classroom.

Behaviour management is one of the most important factors, but can also be the

toughest within an educational setting. There are many reasons that behaviour needs to be

managed; to create a classroom setting where learning can flourish and the children need

to feel successful, to allow the children to feel safe, to have and gain respect, and to teach

the children about socially appropriate and acceptable behaviour. However, it is important

for teachers to consider the style they approach certain situations in order to gain the correct

behaviour management. For example, (Hook and Vass, no date, p.9) state that effective

teachers approach behaviour with a very positive attitude. It is important that you

emphasise more on positive statements rather than negative, the use of praise and rewards,

and to highlight on their success rather than highlighting when they make mistakes. If a

child is talking and not paying attention, some teachers may approach this situation by

saying “can you stop talking and pay attention please?” However, a more positive outlook

to this situation can be “I need you to choose to face the front and listen to me. Thanks”

This is focusing more on what they should be doing, rather than what they are doing wrong.
Observation and Participation

Classroom management is a learning process for both the teacher and the students.

For the teacher it is what he/she does to prepare the lesson, the learning environment, and

the students for learning. For the student, it is the challenge of complying with the standards

set by the teacher. Many students do not always know how to control their behavior, as at

home, it is a common theme for parents to be frustrated by their youngsters’ lack of ability

to manage their own behavior. Therefore the goal of classroom management should be to

help students develop and shape their character, as well as to promote self-discipline.

As I observed in Grade six, teacher Sheila is a good teacher she always aware that

proper classroom discipline requires skills different from that of teaching skills. These

skills include patience, respect, good role modeling, a firm attitude, control of anger, and

consistency. When she handling misbehavior, she will make sure that all students learn

what is unacceptable about that behavior. Getting angry or stressed does not reduce future

misbehavior.

21st Century Teaching strategies
Reflection

As teachers, we keep on talking about the 21st century skills our students need to

acquire. But as I reflect on this how can our students acquire these skills if we, the teachers,

don’t have the necessary skills and abilities in order for us to pass it to our students. As

Brene Brown said “We cannot give our children what we don’t have.”

Teachers nowadays are being trained to cope with the society’s fast growing

technology to be able to face challenges and demands of the 21st century education.

To become an effective 21st century teacher, I choose to have these Five

Characteristics of an Effective 21st Century Educator. First, Anticipates the Future. A good

21st century educator is cognizant of the rapidly changing technology trends and aware of

the career opportunities for children in the coming years.

Second, a lifelong learner. Lifelong learning is learning that is pursued throughout

life. This applies what we learn in our module 1 that is learning to Know, Learning to Do,

Learning to Live Together and Learning to Be.

Third, foster peer relationships. Technology can foster isolation, therefore

interpersonal relationship skills must be taught in our classrooms so that our students can

go on to be effective in the workplace and fulfilled in their lives.

Fourth, can teach and assess all levels of learners. This means incorporating

teaching strategies to serve a range of learners.

And lastly, to discern effective and non-effective technology. Effective 21st century

teacher need to be adept in judging the educative and non-educative use of technologies

made available to them and their students at school and at home.

These characteristics would help and guide me to become effective 21st century

teacher. Equipped with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values needed to meet the

challenges and demands of the 21st century education.

Assessment strategy
Reflection

When assessment strategies are properly implemented with the classroom, the student as

well as the educator are effected. When students are active participants within the assessment

process it allows them to take ownership of their learning. Students who embrace what are called

mastery or learning goals focus on self-improvement, developing competence, accomplishing

challenging tasks, gaining insight and new skills and understanding (McMillan & Tunner, 2014).As

educators being proficient in the use of effective assessment allows us to make data-based academic

decisions. When educators use proper assessment strategies the data collected from these

assessments can be used to make important as it relate to instructional practices. For example, if a

formative assessment indicates that students as failing to comprehend an aspect of a lesson, the

teacher can then adjust their instruction to meet the needs of their students.

.
Multi-grade teaching and learning
Reflection

To be successful multi-grade teacher, I must balance my time effective and prepare

variety of activities to keep all groups of students engaged in multi- grade environment

which is an opportunity to develop new and more effective teaching process.

Multigrade teaching is an important and appropriate way to provide good quality

education to children who are often neglected by their education system because the area

of living they have, poor and remote communities.

Learning environment should also be considered to create as classroom conducive

to learning.

Multigrade classroom provide the opportunity to break down the hindrance

between grades and look at the students as group or learners.

As a multi grade, I am the key to plan, design and manage the range of both grade-

appropriate and mixed-grade activities for children to keep the interest for the learners to

learn.

As a Multigrade, you have to be flexible and use various teachings method

according to their specific teaching need at the time. This not only supports the educational

worth of the teacher and serves the national curriculum goals, but also represent flexible

methods that encouraged children to be independent and develop their personalities.

K-12 Implementation Issues and Concern

Nowadays, most of the students are the happy-go-lucky types who do not regard

education as their priority. They’d rather bum around in malls or stay glued to computers.

As a result, most graduates are half-baked, who can’t even write or speak good English,

unlike the students of yesteryears.

Two more years in the basic education curriculum will make it harder for the

children of the poor to pursue their education, due to financial and time constraints. And

is going to be burdensome for the family, even if it is part of the free education in our

country. There are many expenses that the family will have to bear, like the allowance

and baon, plus transportation fare of pupils and students, if the family is far from school.

I think it would be better if the government will provide our schools over the

country with more well-trained teachers, books, classrooms, chairs, and all our needs

before and two years to the basic education curriculum. We are not yet ready for it. The

salaries of teachers are also insufficient.

I want to teach my children how

to live this life on earth,
To face its struggles and its strife
And to improve their worth,
Not just the lesson in a book
Or how the rivers flow,
But how to choose the proper path
Wherever they may go,
To understand the eternal truth
And know right from wrong,
And gather all the beauty of
A flower and a song,
For if I help the world to grow
In wisdom and in grace,
Then I shall feel that I have won
And I have filled my place,
And so ask your guidance,God.
That I may do my part,
For character and confidence
And happiness of heart.
