1. INTRODUCTION
NOTE:
The present manual is updated for the product it is sold with in order to grant an adequate
reference in operating and maintaining the equipment.
The manual may not reflect changes to the product not impacting service operations.
CONTROLS has a long tradition of manufacturing automatic setting time testers for
cement and mortar.
The basic test procedure is unchanged from that of the previous generations: a needle
drops into a cement sample at regular intervals and in fixed positions, and the penetration
depth is measured by a sensor. As the sample hardens, the penetration depth decreases;
when thresholds defined by the standards or the operator are reached, initial and final
setting times are recorded.

slide itself, pull the slide
slid upwards until it is clear of the instrument.
To re-insert
insert the slide, do so from the top by inserting it into the profiled hole and
lowering it into position, taking care that the needle passes down through the profiled
hole and out through the slot directly below.
The correct orientation of the slide is with the small ball bearing on the slide facing the
rear of the instrument (see figure below).
Fig. 4-1
Note that there is a sensor connected to the slide which detects its vertical position,
allowing accurate depth
pth penetrations to be measured; therefore the slide should only be
removed when a test is not being made, otherwise it will not be possible to continue the
test correctly.
The insertion and extraction of the slide can be made both with the instrument switched
on (but no test being run) or switched off.
NOTE:
The coupling between machine and its plunger has been tailored during factory testing. It
is recommended that plungers belonging to other machines are not used..

standard is selected. A CUSTOM option can be selected when a user-defined drop
sequence is required.
To change the standard, keep tapping the field until the one you want is displayed.
To view or edit the drop sequence, tap the DROP NUMBER field and the DROP
SEQUENCE screen will open (Fig. 4-22).
Fig. 4-22
The DROP SEQUENCE screen contains a table showing the total number of drops and
the following information about the programmed sequence:
• The number of the circle around the circumference of which the drops will be made
• D : the diameter of the circle, in millimetres
The maximum diameter that can be entered is 60mm.
• Pts : the number of drops that will be made around the circle
• Cord : the distance between each drop on the circumference of the circle, in
millimetres
The minimum distance between drops is 2mm. The values in this column are
calculated by the firmware and cannot be edited.

Here’s how it works:
The test starts with time interval T1 between each drop. When penetration reaches the
first threshold (S1) the time interval changes to T2. When S2 penetration is reached, the
time interval changes to T3 and when S3 penetration is reached, the time interval
changes to T4.
Since the number of drops during a test is fixed, this enables drops to be concentrated in
crucial sections of the test, allowing the initial and final setting times to be accurately
determined.
T3 & S2 and T4 & S3 thresholds are optional and can be unlocked by tapping the option
buttons adjacent to the T3 and T4 cells. If determination of the final setting time is not
important, you may wish to only enter values for T1, S1 and T2.
To enter a value, tap the cell and type in the value using the Keyboard.
Tap HELP to display an example test plot (Fig. 4-28) with the time (T) and penetration (S)
thresholds annotated. The plot shows the drops concentrated between T2 and T3 and
between T4 and the end of the test, in order to record the initial and final setting times,
indicated as LI and LF on the chart. (To close the plot, click anywhere on the screen.)

The reading on the left is the relative position of the needle in millimetres; on the right is
the absolute position of the needle, in bits. When the needle is fully raised, the absolute
reading is 0 bits.
Reference
The cell on the left represents the current setting for 0mm in bits. The cell on the right is
the bits reading at 39mm.
Tim e m easure
This function is for checking the accuracy of the VICAMATIC-2 clock, with a counter
in seconds that can be compared to an independent reference device.
To verify the unit’s timer, tap the VERIFY key. A countdown of 3 seconds will begin,
allowing the reference timing device to be started as the same time as zero is reached by
the unit (the unit emits a beep at zero). The timer continues to increment seconds until
you tap the VERIFY key again. A beep is emitted every 30 seconds. (If the standby
screen is shown while this activity is ongoing, simply tap the screen to return to the
CALIBRATION screen.)
Move needle up
When maximum travel is reached, the unit emits a beep and limit indicators on the image
of the device are lit red: the top indicator represents the upwards travel limit of the
needle and bottom one represents the forward travel limit of the platen. When a limit is
reached, no further movement in that direction is possible.
To move the needle or the platen, touch and hold the arrow keys.
If a MEMORY RESET is performed (see Chapter 6.2) the REFERENCE values for the
0mm bit reading and the 39mm bit reading are set to default.
The values for each machine are written on a label stuck inside the equipment (an
example of the label is shown below).
Fig. 6-2
This procedure sets the zero position of the plunger/needle and ensures that the drop from
this position measures 39.0mm.
1. Make sure the needle is properly inserted and fixed into the plunger.
2. Using the DOWN arrow key on the DIAGNOSTIC screen, lower the needle until it
just touches the upper rim of the mould.
3. Touch and hold the left REFERENCE cell and release it after 3 seconds.
