Course Description
In this course, students will use provided formulas to find area, surface area, and volume. Learners will
be challenged to consider the usefulness of area, surface area, and volume in real-life. To do this,
students will reason abstractly and quantitatively using specific online resources. This course will be
made available to all sixth-grade students who are a part of Esperanza Academy and will take nine
weeks to complete (one marking period).
Rationale
The mission of Esperanza is to strengthen Hispanic communities through “faith, integrity, and
excellence.” The Esperanza organization has carried out this mission over the past thirty years in
Philadelphia; an offshoot of this mission was the creation of Esperanza Academy. Since the physical
building itself is limited in its size (and, consequently, unable to expand), it is only logical that additional
online courses, like Grade 6 Geometry, be made available. Grade 6 Geometry is not an optional course
for grade 6 students nationwide; so, this will provide more students than ever with access to the
rigorous mathematics education that they need. Technology needs for this course include: laptops or
Chromebooks for each child, internet access for each child, and Google platform capabilities. Esperanza
would not need to use any additional funds to run this course.
Objectives
Students will be able to…
1. Calculate the areas of quadrilaterals and triangles in a given room
2. Design an apartment floor plan to find the areas of irregular shapes within the plans
3. Use a coordinate grid to design, plot, and calculate areas of locations in a fictional town
4. Identify the exact amount of wrapping paper needed to cover a rectangular prism-shaped gift
5. Produce a sketch of their own homes and provide volume dimensions
6. Analyze a partner’s home sketch to determine missing volume dimensions
7. Create a website to demonstrate their knowledge of area, surface area, and volume
