The Celebration of ‘Love’
on Valentine’s Day
V alentine’s Day in the Western world is
known as the day when lovers express
their affection through gifts and messages.
Even though it is not a public holiday, it is
celebrated with such hype that causes many
who are single to feel left out of the lovefest.
I often see people go out of their way to
buy something expensive for their signifi-
cant other because the fear of not doing so
might end the relationship or create a wedge
between the two. Some do not necessarily
buy a gift, but put on a whole production to
seduce their lover into falling for them all
over again. Then there are others who take
the opportunity to seek out a lover even for
the day just to feel a sense of being loved.
Others use the day to rekindle a love that is
dying. I am sure there are many other ways
in which Valentine’s Day unite or divide
lovers.
However, it makes me question the type
of “Love” we are actually celebrating on
Valentine’s Day. This led me to dig a bit
deeper into the foundation on which this hol-
iday was built. And its origins are dark!
According to National Public Radio
(NPR), “from February 13th to the 15th, the
Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia.
The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then
whipped women with the hides of the ani-
mals they had just slain. The Roman roman-
tics were drunk. They were naked,’ says
Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of
Colorado at Boulder. Young women would
actually lineup for the men to hit them,
Lenski says. They believed this would make
them fertile.”
It was a brutal fete, included a match-
making lottery in which young men drew the
names of women from a jar. The couple
would then be coupled up for the duration of
the festival or longer if the match was right.
Also, on a separate note, Emperor Claudius
II executed two men both named Valentine
on February 14th of different years in the 3rd
century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored
by the Catholic Church with the celebration
of St. Valentine's Day.”
In other words, Valentine’s Day was
built on a foundation of murder and a ritual
that has nothing to do with actual love. I
know we are living in a different time and
we have given Valentine’s Day a new norm.

them. Both rituals may not look the same,
but there are similarities.
Conversely, what if real love is loving
someone else unconditionally and expecting
nothing in return. Celebrating love is a beau-
tiful thing and we should celebrate it, but in
way where it creates more love than conflict.
It should not be a day when people expect
someone to buy them gifts or to prove to
them that their lover loves them -- especially
by showering them with gifts that are tem-
porary. It should be a day when we try to
outdo the next person by demonstrating how
loving we can be to everyone, not just to our
significant others. In essence, this display of
love should be an everyday expression to
everyone who cross our paths. We should de-
cide to show others love through our kind-
ness, gentleness, and compassion because
real love is a decision, not a feeling. It is lov-
ing someone without the expectation of a re-
ward from the person we are loving.
Nevertheless, go ahead: buy your gifts!

Jamaican is first Black woman to command Marine Corp

W omen make up a mere 8 percent of the
United States Marine Corps, but a Ja-
maican-born woman has risen to the top of
the Corp.
Lorna Mahlock, who hails from
Kingston, made history in 2018 when she be-
came the first Black woman promoted in to
brigadier general in the 243-year-old Marine
Corps, the smallest of the four military serv-
ices. She is also the Corp’s director of com-
mand, control, communications and
computers (C4), and CIO.
According to the Marine Corps Com-
munity Services, the branch has the fewest
female service members. The Corps made
history in 2017 by welcoming its first female
infantry officer. The unidentified woman was
the first to finish training for a military occu-
pational specialty (MOS), which was opened
up to women in April 2016. In 2015, the Pen-
tagon historically made all combat jobs avail-
able to women.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Mahlock
immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, and was
commissioned into the Marines in 1991. She
was selected for the Marine Corps Enlisted
Commissioning Education Program, gradu-
ated from Marquette University.
Prior to her current assignment, she
served as Deputy Director, Headquarters Ma-
rine Corps Plans, Policy and Operations and
Commanding Officer, Marine Air Control
Group 18, Okinawa, Japan.
Designated as an Air Traffic Control Of-
ficer, she earned certifications as a Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) Tower Local
Controller and a Marine Aviation Weapons
and Tactics Instructor. She has commanded
and led at various levels globally and in com-
bat, including but not limited to: Air Traffic
Control Detachment Commander; Executive
Officer – 1st Stinger Battery; Director - Ma-
rine Corps Instructional Management
School; Air Control Officer - G3 Future Op-
erations 1st Marine Aircraft Wing; Company
Commander - Operation SOUTHERN
WATCH and IRAQI FREEDOM 01; Opera-
tions and Executive Officer - IRAQI FREE-
DOM 02; Director - Marine Air Command

Jamaican couple plead
guilty to lottery scamming
charges in US court
PENNSYLVANIA:
A Jamaican couple living in Pennsylva-
nia in the United States admitted on
Tuesday to ripping off elderly persons in a
lottery scam.
U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon im-
posed a term of time served on 22 year old
Ashani Levy after he pleaded guilty to
money structuring in connection with the
scam.
He was in the U.S. on a tourist visa and
has served about three months in jail.
Levy will be turned over to immigra-
tion authorities for deportation. His wife,

volved in a lottery phone scam designed to
trick senior citizens into sending them

packages had been sent to the location since
June last year.

After months of criticism from elected
officials in New York unhappy about the in-
centives offered to Amazon to establish a
new campus in Queens, the online retail
giant announced Thursday it is scrapping its
plans.
In recent days, officials across the coun-
try—from nearby locations like Newark and
Connecticut to Chicago—have publicly sug-
gested the company should instead pivot to
their areas. But Amazon attempted to tamp
down those efforts Thursday, saying in its
statement that the company does not "intend
to re-open the HQ2 search at this time."

What is Social Security
Disability Insurance?
S ocial Security Disability Insurance
(SSDI) is a federally run benefits pro-
gram that provides aid to people who are un-
able to achieve gainful employment due to a
permanent disabling condition.
SSDI is financed by the Social Security
tax. Therefore, any person that qualifies as
disabled according to the definition provided
by Social Security Administration (SSA), and
who has paid Social Security taxes long
enough to achieve sufficient work credits,
can qualify for SSDI.

Green card holder (permanent resident)
Path to U.S. Citizenship
T he most common path to U.S. citizen-
ship is a green card holder (permanent
resident) of at least 5 years to apply for nat-
uralization.
If you are a green card holder of at
least 5 years, you must meet the following
requirements in order to apply for natural-
ization:
• Be 18 or older at the time of filing
• Be a green card holder for at least 5 years
immediately preceding the date of filing the
Form N-400, Application for Naturalization
Have lived within the state, or USCIS dis-
trict with jurisdiction over the applicant’s
place of residence, for at least 3 months

Do You Qualify for SSDI?

In order to qualify for SSDI, you must suffer
from a permanent condition that prevents you
from working. In other words, your disability
must have lasted, or be expected to last, a
minimum of twelve months and you must be
unable to earn an income greater than $1,220
per month (prior to 2019, this standard allow-

award for 'Best Reggae Album'
O n February 10, Sting and Shaggy
reigned supreme at the 2019 Grammy
Awards, which took place at the Staples
Center in Los Angels, California.
Sting and Shaggy took home the
Grammy award for "Best Reggae Album"
for their collaborative album 44/876. They
bested competition from such albums as As
the World Turns by Black Uhuru, Reggae
Forever by Etana, Rebellion Rises by Ziggy
Marley and A Matter of Time by Protoje.
In his Grammy acceptance speech,
Shaggy expressed his gratitude and thanked
his family, especially his wife and daughter,
as well as his Jamaican crew. "Thank you
to all of the nominees in the reggae cate-
gory," he said, and he gave a shout-out to
each of their names.
This marked Shaggy's second career
Grammy award, as well as his second
Grammy win in the "Best Reggae Album"
category. He previously won in 1996 for
Boombastic. For Sting, on the other hand,
this marked his 17th career Grammy tro-
phy.

titioners in the persons of Bentley Kyle Evans
as Director and Keith L. Smith as Director of

Jamaican farmers
to benefit from
marijuana industry
KINGSTON, Jamaica:
P rime Minister Andrew Holness says that
the Alternative Development Programme
(ADP), which will provide an avenue for
small farmers to benefit from the marijuana
industry, will start by March. The programme
is intended to prevent and eliminate the illicit
cultivation of marijuana and channel the
process through legal system.

farming of marijuana to
provide raw material
for proces- sors. “It is a
real fear that as that
(marijuana) industry
emerges to become more
corporatised, that the original

the benefits, when you were the ones singing
the praises and the benefits from how long,”
Holness said.
“So this programme is of significant im-
portance to ensure that small farmers, and, in
fact, communities like Accompong, where
there is certain discipline, a certain order, a
certain social system that will ensure that it is
not used in illicit ways, will benefit,” he
added.
Speaking at a ceremony in commemora-
tion of the 281 anniversary of the peace treaty
signed by the Accompong Maroons with the
British and to commemorate the birthday of
legendary leader Cudjoe, Holness said he has
received the commitment of the Minister of
Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fish-
eries, Audley Shaw, that the programme will
begin within the first quarter of this year.
“I know that you have actually started
your part of the programme, but you are now
awaiting the Government’s part of the pro-
gramme to commence. I had a word with him
(Shaw) and he gave me a commitment that
the Alternative Development Programme for
the small ganja farmers to produce for the
legal trade will start,” he said.
The 1998 Action Plan, adopted by the
United Nations General Assembly, provides
for the inclusion of a programme, such as the
ADP, through specifically designed rural de-
velopment measures consistent with sus-
tained national economic growth.

Wanted Nationals On Interpol

A whopping 55 Caribbean nationals from
just one country are on the Interpol’s
most wanted list, News Americas Now has
found.
The 55 are from Jamaica and comprise
the any country in the region, including the
Dominican Republic. The majority – 40 –
are wanted by Jamaican authorities for mur-
der or unlawful wounding.
Others like Tuvares Narado Thompson,
30, is wanted by Costa Rican authorities and
Albert Bolt, 64, is wanted by US authorities
– also for murder.
The others on the list are wanted for
rape, assault with intent to cause grievous
harm or gun crimes.
However, Benjamin Thomas, 67, of Ja-
maica, is wanted for narco-trafficking – con-
spiracy to possess with intent to distribute

H aitian President Jovenel Moise broke his
silence after a week of violent protests
demanding his resignation as the US an-
nounced it was pulling "non-emergency per-
sonnel" from the country over the deadly
unrest.
"I will not leave the country in the hands
of armed gangs and drug traffickers," Moise
said in a pre-recorded address broadcast on
state television, speaking in Creole in the af-
termath of clashes between authorities and
demonstrators in the capital Port-au-Prince.
Since February 7, at least seven people
have died as Haiti has been plunged into po-
litical crisis, with everyday life paralyzed by
protests and barricades in the largest towns.
The protesters, angered about skyrocket-
ing inflation and the alleged theft of nearly
US$2 billion in Venezuelan oil relief to the is-
land, are demanding Moise's resignation.
Meanwhile, the United States announced
it was removing "non-emergency personnel"
from the country on Thursday, the same day
that Canada said it was temporarily shuttering
its embassy.

Guaido and President Nicolas Maduro are
vying for control of the country.
The United States is among more

Guaido as interim president, but Maduro
backed by the country's military as well as
Russia, China and dozens of other states
has so far refused to relinquish his office.
US national security advisor John Bolton
made the announcement on the aid
pledged to Venezuela following an Organ-
ization of American States conference on
assisting the country.
According to David Smolanksy, co-
ordinator of an OAS working group on
migration and refugees from Venezuela,
the money will go directly to aid collec-
tion centers set up on the borders with
Colombia and Brazil and on the Caribbean

Cocaine seized
at Jamaican
Airport
T here was a significant cocaine seizure
at Norman Manley International Air-
port in Kingston on Tuesday when 24
kilograms of cocaine valued at J$26 mil-
lion was found at an export warehouse.
Four persons have been detained in
connection with the seizure.
The Narcotics Police say the cocaine
was found about 11:30 am, in a consign-
ment of ground provisions that had been
prepared for export. The shipment was
destined for Miami, Florida.

Councilman pay’s being garnished
for defaulting on $140,000 loan

C ouncilman Michael Jackson’s pay-
check is being garnished for default-
ing on a $140,000 business loan.
Jackson’s lender, the Paterson
Restoration Corporation (PRC), obtained
a court order in late December to collect
on the defaulted loan.
10-percent of his gross weekly wage
has to be withheld to pay back the loan.
Jackson earns $41,213 as a councilman,
according to payroll records.
Jackson declined to comment on
Friday. The Paterson Restoration Corpo-
ration gave him the loan $140,000 loan
at 2.25-percent interest in 2009 to reno-
vate his restaurant, Jacksonville, on
Grand Street.

NJ granted $1.6M in aid
to undocumented students
TRENTON:
N ew Jersey granted $1.625 million in state aid to over 500 undocumented students
for the 2018-2019 academic year, according to state officials. The report from the
Higher Education Student Assistance Authority states that 513 students received financial
aid grants in the fall of 2018. The students were all part of the Deferred Action for Child-
hood Arrivals program, which means that they were brought into the country illegally
when they were only children.

C atholic Church officials in New Jer-
sey have named nearly 200 priests
credibly accused of sexual abuse.
Each of the five Catholic dioceses in
the state released their own lists of
names, totaling 189 in all. The lists in-
clude parishes where each priest worked,
if they had more than one accuser and if
the priest has either been removed from
their ministry or is now deceased.
Cardinal Joseph Tobin released a
video statement following the release of
the names. “Victims, their families and
the faithful are rightfully outraged over
the abuses perpetrated against minors,”
Tobin said.
Tobin also said, “Anyone aware of
suspected sexual misconduct by any
cleric, employee, or volunteer of the
Archdiocese [should] report it immedi-
ately to law enforcement and to the Arch-
diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator:
