Advance Organizer/Agenda:
Have some kind messages ready for samples for the notes.
Have paper out and extra markers.
Have a list of staff names.
Have the students attach the papers to each other’s’ shoulders so that they
hang down like capes on their backs.
Have the students stand and circulate so that each person in the group can
write statements of appreciation on other people’s paper capes. Emphasize
that the statement need to be positive.
When each student has several written statements on his or her cape, we will
start discussion in Learning Activity 2.
Assessments/Differentiation:
Make sure students are writing on different classmates’ capes, not just their
friends.
Make sure they are writing positive messages.
Key Questions:
What are some of the neat things people wrote?
What similarities did you see in what people wrote?
How did the fact that this activity was anonymous help you to be honest?
What feelings did you have when people were writing on your paper cape?
Learning Activity #2:
As a class, we will gather in our community circle for discussion about our
activity.
Ask students about the various key questions.
I will facilitate group discussion. I want students to discuss what they thought of
the activity.
Next, we will discuss Random Act of Kindness Day and different random acts
of kindness people can do.
Assessment/Differentiation:
Make sure all students are included in discussion.
Ask students questions who may be a bit off task.
Key Questions:
Why do we celebrate Random Act of Kindness Day?
What is a random act of kindness?
What is a kind message you could write someone?
How do acts of kindness make you feel?
Learning Activity #3:
Students will be writing a short note of a kind message. These notes will be
delivered to each staff member at our school.
To start we will go over some sample kind messages that students could write.
See Performance Task for more details.
Assessment/Differentiation:
Suggest that students write in the neatest printing possible.
Make sure students write positive messages.
Those that finish their first note prompt, will write another one. I want to make
sure each staff member gets a note.
Closure:
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Ask how this activity made students feel. Why
do we do nice things for others?
