• Duration of fire resistance specified (S275) steel is 0.23 x 275 = 63.25N/mm2.

Visual 2 - 3 side exposed beam (not boxed) If you look at the A/P:
• A/P square 1 < A/P square 2 < A/P square 3
• Thickness of fire protected material square 1 > material
square 2 > material square 3
NOTE: A higher A/P needs LESS material to fire protect the
steel member than a lower A/P. This is different than with
Hp/A.
W = Weight per linear foot (lb) (not shown on the picture) Conversion between the various methods for the section
D = Heated perimeter (inch) (see arrows in the picture) factor
If you assume that the steel member in visual 1 and 2 is the It is possible to convert from Hp/A to W/D and vise versa as
same: shown in the following equations:
• W is for both, visual 1 and 2, exactly the same Conversion factors
• D is within visual 2 smaller than in visual 1
1 kg = 2.204622622 lb
If you look at the W/D:
1 m = 39.370078740 inch
• W/D visual 1 > W/D visual 2
1 m = 3.28083895 ft
• Thickness of fire protected material visual 1 > material
visual 2 Density of steel = 7850 kg/m3
In the ASTM (US) they use a similar concept to calculate the W = (A * 5274.956455) = A * 133.98389
section factor (A/P), but they use different parameters to show D Hp * 39.370078740 Hp
the relationship between exposed surface and weight.
Relationship between A/P, W/D and Hp/A
A/P is used in ASTM (US) for only hollow sections.
A = (W/D) * 144 = (W/D) * 0.29388
Calculation of A/P is based on the ratio between weight and P 490
heated perimeter surface.
A = 39.37519

NOTE: The air space created in boxing a circular section improves the insulation and the
value of Hp/A. Therefore, Hp higher than profile protection (p) would be anomalous.
Hp pD Hence, Hp is taken as the circumference of the circular section and not 4D.
Following is an example of calculation for a universal beam section using box protection of 305mm x 305mm x 240kg/m serial
size to be encased on three or four sides when A = 305.6cm², B = 317.9mm, D = 352.6mm, t = 23mm.
Four sided box protection: Hp = 2B + 2D Three sided box protection: Hp = B + 2D
= (2 x 317.9) + (2 x 352.6) = 317.9 + (2 x 352.6)
= 1341mm (1.341m) = 1023.1mm (1.023m)
Hp/A = 1.341 ÷ 0.03056 Hp/A = 1.023 ÷ 0.03056
= 43.9m-1 = 33.5m-1
The above calculated values are approximate in that radii at corners and roots of all sections are ignored. In these figures,
Hp/A = A/V.
