PREFACE

The Statistical Abstract of Meghalaya, 2016 is the 7th edition in the series brought by the
Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Meghalaya. The Statistical Abstract provides a wide range of
data on diverse sectors of the economy of the State such as demography, agriculture, education, health,
livestock, forest, power, mining, industry, roads, banking, cooperation, state income, state finance,
economic census, etc. Efforts have been made to maintain uniformity with the earlier editions. The
data has been presented in time series form, wherever possible, so that it presents the trend and changes
taking place in the various sectors over a period of time.

This Directorate is grateful to the Government Departments and Offices/ Organisations of the
State for extending their whole hearted cooperation in providing necessary information for bringing
out the Publication in a very comprehensive form. Various publications and reports of different Minis-
tries of the Government of India have also been referred to wherever required. The sources of data have
been reflected at the bottom of each table.

This Directorate would also like to place on record the appreciation for the sincere and relentless
efforts made by the Officers and Staff who have contributed to the compilation and timely completion
of the Publication. Officers of the Publication Section of this Directorate including Smti A. M. Laloo,
Joint Director, Smti M. B. Kharmawphlang, Research Officer, Smti R.D. Pathaw, Statistical Officer
