DMPS-5/48
Power Module
Instruction Sheet
INTRODUCTION
This instruction sheet provides directions for installing the DMPS-5/48 Power Module in the
ADC PatchMate™ chassis. There are no operator controls or adjustments on the DMPS-5/48
Power Module.
Revision History
1. GENERAL
Read and understand these instructions completely before beginning the installation. Perform
all steps in the order listed.
Warning: To avoid personal injury and equipment damage, power must be disconnected from
the chassis whenever modules are being installed or removed.
The DMPS-5/48 Power Module can only be installed in chassis that have slots 17 and 18 empty.
The DMPS-5/48 Power Module is designed to provide operating voltages to all standard ADC
PatchMate Chassis that require power, such as the PMCH-1, PMCH-3, PMCH-6, PMCH-7,
and any PMSL-xx, PMSLA-xx, or PMSLR-xx series assemblies. The Power Module is
designed for use in a Central Office (–48 Vdc) environment where 120 Vac is not available.
The Power Module converts office battery (–48 Vdc) to the operating voltages and waveforms
required by the PatchMate chassis.
One flat blade standard screwdriver. One Phillips-head screwdriver. A plug crimping tool may
be required when fabricating the dc power leads. Wire stripping tool to prepare dc power
leads. ¼-inch nut driver to tighten Power Interface Bracket mounting hardware.

2. SITE PREPARATION
Locate a suitable –48 Vdc 5.0 amp fused power source. Following accepted wiring practices,
run wires for power to the chassis where the Power Module will be installed. Make certain
that all safety and wiring practices for dc power wiring are strictly observed.
Caution: Do not install a fuse in the source fuse panel at this time.
3. INSTALLATION
Warning: To avoid personal injury and equipment damage, power must be disconnected from
the chassis whenever modules are being installed or removed.
On new installations, it is easier to install the Power Module before the PatchMate chassis is
installed in a rack or cabinet. It is not necessary to remove the PatchMate chassis from a rack
or cabinet before installing the Power Module. If the PatchMate Chassis is already installed in
a rack or cabinet start with Step 1. If Power Module is being installed in a new chassis that has
not yet been installed start with Step 5.
1. If an ac power supply (ADC Model DMPS-5 or DMPS-5E) is already installed and providing
power to the PatchMate chassis, disconnect this power supply from the ac source.
2. Disconnect input power leads from the terminal block on the back of the PatchMate
chassis, see Figure 1.

3. Remove the power supply and associated wiring from the rack or cabinet.
4. Dress back any cables, wires, or other obstructions that block access to slots 17 and 18
(two left-most slots) of the chassis when viewed from the rear.
5. At the front of the chassis, remove the Patch Blank Panel (PMBF-1) from slots 17 and 18
(two right-most slots when viewed from the front. Discard these panels and retaining screws.
6. Remove the nuts and washers from the two studs at the top of the power interface
bracket. Save this hardware.

7. Position the Power Interface Bracket at the back left end of the chassis, as shown in
Figure 2. The left stud on the bracket will extend through the corresponding hole in the
upper chassis lip. The right stud will be positioned in the U" shaped slot in the upper
chassis lip. The fork" at the bottom of the bracket should be positioned with one leg
inside the lip on the lower part of the chassis and the other leg outside the lip.

8. Place mounting hardware on the studs as follows, do not tighten nuts at this time.
a. On the left stud, place one star washer and one nut.
b. On the right stud, place a flat washer, a star washer, and the remaining nut.
9. From the front of the chassis insert the DMPS-5/48 Power Module into slots 17 and 18.
Make certain that the printed circuit board is pushed tightly into the connector on the
Power Interface Bracket installed earlier.
10. Secure Power Module to the chassis with the four captive screws located on the front.
11. Tighten nuts on the rear Power Interface Bracket, installed earlier.
12. If this is a new chassis installation, install the chassis in the rack or cabinet following the
instructions found in the User Manual.
