DET2033– Lab 2

EXPERIMENT :2
TOPIC : OHM’S LAW IN SERIES CIRCUIT
AIM : The purpose of this lab experiment is to investigate Ohm's Law rules
using resistors in ac circuits connected in series

OBJECTIVE : At the end of the session the students will be able to:-
1. Construct a series circuit.
2. Measure current and load voltage.
3. Calculate current and load voltage using Ohm’s Law.

EQUIPMENT : 1. Multimeter ---- 1 unit

2. Function Generator ---- 1 unit
3. Rheostat (170) ---- 2 units
4. Connecting leads.
5. AC Ammeter ---- 1 unit
6. AC Voltmeter ---- 2 units

INTRODUCTION THEORY
Ohm’s Law

Ohm's law states that the current through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the
potential difference or voltage across the two points, and inversely proportional to the resistance between
them.

The mathematical equation that describes this relationship is:

PROCEDURE

1. Construct the circuit as Figure 2.1.

2. Set R1 = 50 and R2 = 100.
3. Vary the AC voltage supply as Table 2.1 accordingly.
4. Ask your lecturer to verify the circuit connection
before proceeding the experiment.
5. Record the finding of V1, V2 and I in Table 2.1.

Figure 2.1.

6. Construct the circuit as Figure 2.2.

7. Set Vs = 10V, 10kHz and R1 = 50.
8. Vary the Reostat as Table 2.2 .
9. Record the finding of V1, V2 and I in Table 2.2.
