Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
For the English Language Learners within the classroom the teacher can look through the ELL library of
videos in order to help them gain a better understanding because it would be in their first language. Brain
POP is easily accessible so even if the parents do not speak English they will be able to help their student at
home because they can watch it in their language, this would especially help with the reflective practice
assignment. In class if the student is having a hard time focusing on the video the teacher can provide them
with headphones, so all their concentration is on the video and not what is going on around them.
Something else that can be used as an extremely helpful tool for some students is that this video can be
paused and replayed as many times as the student needs to really get an understanding of the content. By
rewinding and pausing the students will gain a better understanding which will help them during the
activities.

Lesson idea implementation:

This Brain POP video will be used to help introduce the patterns and objects that are seen in our solar
system during the day and in the night sky. The teacher will begin by leading a discussion on our solar system,
asking the students different questions such as, “Do you know what our solar system is? Do you know what
makes up our solar system? Can anyone tell me what happens when the sun goes down?”. These questions will
help introduce what they will see in the Brain POP video and get them thinking in the right way. After watching
the video, the students will turn to their neighbor and talk for a few minutes about what happened in the video.
When they are finished talking as a whole class we will do an activity on classifying objects of what is seen in
the daylight versus what is seen in the night sky. The teacher will prepare a smart board activity where the
students can help classify the object they talked about from the video. There will be a side for the night sky and
a side for the daylight (kind of like a t-chart). To the side there will be a list of words such as; night, day, starts,
moon, clouds, sun. And the students will match the word to the correct side of the chart. As they move the word
they will have a chance to tell the class something they learned about that object from the video. This activity
will be used as a formative assessment to see what the students already know about our solar system.
This will help the teacher see what else they need to learn about our solar system.

Reflective Practice:
Extending this project might involve making it a summative assessment and at the end of the unit
having the students do a fun project on the solar system. This specific video talked about the moon and
surrounding planets. The students will create a solar system and show that they can classify the objects in the
night sky. They should be creative, so their parents will need to help them. Once the projects are graded the
teacher will display them for others to see their work around the school.
