The Dangerous of Hazardous and Toxic Waste

Before discussing about the dangerous of hazardous and toxic waste,

we should know what the definition of hazardous and toxic waste itself.

Acording to government regulation No. 18/1999 Waste of hazardous and

toxic material (waste) is residual from activity that contain hazardous material

(waste) or toxic material which are due to their characteristics, concentration

or amount both directly and indirectly can pollute or damage environtment,

health, and the continuity of human and other living things. Based on the

definition of hazardous and toxic waste, we know that hazardous and toxic

waste can be dangerous for human health and environtment.

First, the dangerous of hazardous and toxic waste to human health. It

can be stated that hazardous and toxic waste is dangerous to human health

because it contains hazardous chemical substance such as Mercury (Hg),

Plumbum (Pb), Chromium (Cr), etc. and as we know that all those substance

are heavy metal toxic that can be very dangerous if it enter the human body.

Based on Alodokter.com heavy metal toxic cause damage to central nerve

system and kidney that cause tremor, loosing memory, or even cancer if the

exposure of the toxic happen on and on. Heavy metal toxic is also very

dangerous to pregnant women because it can make the baby exposed by the

toxic, and if it happen the baby will get some mental problem, disability, and

even cerebral palsy or microchephaly. Hazardous and toxic waste can

contaminate human body by exposure such as inhalation, oral, or direct skin

contact. Therefore, the people who work in industrial factory and live near

industrial area have higher risk to be contaminated by heavy metal toxic.

Second, the dangerous of hazardous and toxic waste to the

enviontment. One of the example of hazardous and toxic waste that can be

dangerous to the environtment is pesticide. Pesticide is very dangerous to the

environtment because according to the Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI),

the effect of pesticide not only kill the pest but also kill the other insect. It is

dangerous because it damage ecosystem balance. The over use of pesticide

also make the pest become resistant to the pesticide. The other problem that

can appear because the use of pesticide is environtmental pollution. Environtal

pollution that is caused by pesticide not only happen on the land but also

happen in the water and the air. In the land the use of pesticide can reduce

biodiversity. In the water, pesticide will pollute the live under water because

when pesticide is used to the agricultural land and rain happens, the pesticide

can flow away to the river. In the river, the pesticide will pollute the water

organism such as fish, crab, etc. In the air, pesticide pollution is caused by the

use of spraying way to use pestide. By using spray, the pesticide will be

suspended as particulates and contaminate more place.

 As we know the dangerous of hazardous and toxic waste, it is clear

that we can not throw away the hazardous and toxicwaste directly to the

environtment because it can be dangerous to human and the evirontment.

Hazardous and toxic waste should be processed first before it is thrown away

to the environtment to reduce its toxicity .

From the explanation above, we can take the conclusion that hazardous

and toxic waste is the waste that can endanger human health and environtment

by its characteristic, concentration, and amount. Therefore, we have to reduce

the use of hazardous and toxic waste and before it is thrown away to the

environtment, it must be processed first.
