The Investors in People Standard is a business improvement tool designed to advance an

organization’s performance through its people. Developed in 1990 by the National
Training Task Force, the Standard helps organizations to improve performance and
realize objectives through the management and development of their people. Since it was
developed, the Standard has been reviewed every three years to ensure that it remains
relevant, accessible and attractive to all. ‘Investors in People’ recognizes that
organizations use different means to achieve success through their people. Therefore, it
provides a framework to help find the most suitable means for achieving success through
your people.

The standard is based on the following three key principles:

Plan
Developing strategies to improve the performance of the organization
Do
Taking action to improve the performance of the organization
Review
Evaluating the impact on the performance of the organization

However, the standard is expressed in 12 indicators representing an organization’s

commitment, planning, action and evaluation.

entrepreneurs in its midst. A large, diverse number of individuals and groups have placed
the interest of the nation and its people above their own, and in doing so; have earned the
respect and reputation that their companies carry today.

EBM is one of the leading firms of the country, not only in terms of profitability and
growth, but also in the area of social services. EBM’s corporate social responsibility
umbrella has benefited several sectors including environment, education, health and
sports.

early years of PTV, when sponsorships were considered a taboo in
the marketing circles of Pakistan. Through its sponsorship support,
EBM made it possible for millions to watch major international
sporting events through the first-ever live telecast, via satellite, of
Mohammad Ali’s boxing bouts (1974), the telecast of the Football
World Cup (1973) and the finals of the All England Lawn Tennis

only possible if more and more companies, and not just the large ones, come forward to
do their bit. The corporate sector must take a long-term view on this matter as a
prosperous community can only benefit the corporate sector in return.

* This sustainability report is for the EBM Fiscal Year July 2006 to June 2007 and is part
of EBM’s annual sustainability reporting process (the previous report was published in
November 2006 for the previous fiscal year). The report covers all aspects of EBM’s
sustainability activities, defining sustainability activities as where the Company (or its
employees with the Company’s explicit support) is engaged in environmental or social
sustainability activities, prioritizing those that EBM believes have had the most
significant impact. Data management techniques have been described (where appropriate)
in the body of this report. Environmental data has been analyzed (where possible) by
independent laboratories and EBM intends to have a full independent audit of its
sustainability report for the year 07/08. This report has been produced for employees,
customers, local community, regulators and any other stakeholders who have an interest
in how EBM understands and implements sustainability. The report covers all of EBM’s
divisions and units, with the exception of the manufacturing plant at Hattar which is
currently undergoing an extensive development program which severely hindered efforts
to gather meaningful data and will be fully included in next year’s sustainability

these programs and initiatives and demonstrates why we believe that EBM is a Company

Welcome to EBM’s Social Responsibility Report for 2007 – this is where we tell
the story of how we impact on all those we touch our stakeholders and how
we’re working to make sure that this interaction is as positive as possible.
EBM has enjoyed a record year in terms of Sales and Revenue growth; we
experienced a 31% volume growth rate with revenue increasing from Rs.5.6
billion to Rs.7.5 billion. Our investment in plant and equipment touched Rs.
750 million as a result of which our capacity and efficiency have increased
significantly. Our emphasis on innovation through research continues via the
Center of Excellence, both the Karachi University and the University of
Faisalabad collaborated with EBM on a number of projects, including the
development of new wheat varieties.
A commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility remains fundamental to our
organization’s mission. This isn’t just because we want to be nice people
doing the right thing. For us,
Corporate Social Responsibility is about being sustainable and creating
partnerships with stakeholders that are good for the society at large. This
year’s report also reflects a change process which is ongoing. We aim to
move towards a larger ‘picture’ with respect to our CSR strategy and have
started developing internal structures to help ensure that our CSR efforts are
constantly focused and sustainable over the long term. We’re aiming the
report, quite simply, at anyone interested in knowing more about our
organisation’s soul: staff who want to see where we are heading, clients and
suppliers who are
interested in how we impact the world, people
who are interested in how we approach social
responsibility and anyone else who just wants

to get to know us.

EBM was delighted to win the Helpline Trust
“Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2006”
for our initiatives for the betterment of society
and for adherence to strict ethical business
priorities and principles. EBM was also honoured
by receiving the National Forum of Environment
and Health (NFEH) “Environmental Excellence
Award 2007” for the 4th time in a row as
recognition of our efforts in environmental
protection and safety for its employees,
customers and local community.
In 2006-07 EBM invested more than 37 million
rupees in its various social sustainability
programmes, representing over 8% of total
profits. EBM believes that this underlines its
commitment to social sustainability and proves
that EBM is indeed a Company with a Heart and
Soul.
I don’t know of any other Pakistani company
like ours that produces a report like this.
Good for us. Long live EBM!

Sustainability Vision
The philosophy of EBM is that we are a living
Company, a persona with a body, mind, heart
and soul like any human being. And like any
living organisation, EBM has dreams. We dream
of a company that cares about its customers, its
employees, its community and the environment
we all live in. We dream of a company that
invests its resources in those around it that need
it most, those whose own dreams cannot be
fulfilled.
EBM’s heart and soul is focused on making our
dream a reality and in that fulfilling the dreams
of many many others. And this dream runs like
a thread through everything EBM is and aspires
to be.
That is why two out of EBM’s five core vision
statements focus on giving to the community,
improving the lives of the underprivileged and
sharing the responsibility for the social uplift
and development of Pakistan.
That is why one of EBM’s four core principles
is that of Humanity- EBM will do whatever it
takes to uplift the lives of the most deserving
people around us.
That is why EBM’s values include a focus on
ecology, the environment and on humanity,

____________________________________________________________________ 13
_

focusing our people on their responsibility to

the people and the environment all around us.
And just as EBM’s philosophy for itself is that it
should have a healthy body and healthy mind,
so it believes that its wider interventions in the
community should lead to healthy bodies,
healthy minds.
In light of this, EBM has chosen to focus on
these key areas of healthy bodies (through
healthy eating, sports & leisure activities and
healthcare provision) and healthy minds
(education and developing human capital) for
its key interventions in sustainability

Company context and background

As the pioneers of packaged biscuit
manufacturing in Pakistan, English Biscuit

taxes and duties. Although the bulk of the sales
come from the local Pakistani market, our brands
are universally recognised and sold across the
globe in five continents.
Brands
The trade mark Pied Piper made its mark about
40 years ago, but it still remains in the hearts,
minds and souls of the people through the
variety and excellent quality of biscuits
manufactured under its umbrella. The flagship
brand 'Peek Freans' is a household name and
people blindly believe in the quality of the
products made under this brand.
EBM manufactures the country’s largest range
of hygienic and healthy biscuits under its famous

known brands like Sooper, Rio, Party, Peanut

Approach and Governance of Sustainability

_
CASE STUDY – English Biscuit Manufacturers (Pvt) Limited May 2009
Enhancing Competitiveness & Employability in Korangi Industrial Area

EBM is a privately held and family-run organisation that follows the highest
standards
of national and international standards with
respect to governance and accountability,
including that of social and environmental
sustainability. The Annual Directors’ Report
contains sustainability reporting which is
discussed at EBM’s Annual General Meeting.
EBM believes that it is important to engage a
wide variety of stakeholders as partners, both in
delivery of business actions and also in the
delivery of social and environmental
responsibility actions.
In light of this, EBM seeks to engage with its
stakeholders through:
l An annual Supplier round-table to discuss
social and environmental sustainability
concerns
l The provision of postal, website and (free-of cost)
telephone channels for Customers to
raise any concerns or questions
l Employee suggestion box
l Regular interactions with Civil Society and
Community Partners through conferences
(e.g. Safe food conference, Environment
conference) and project dialogues.
To date, because of EBM’s proactive approach,
no significant environmental or social
responsibility issues or concerns have been raised
through its stakeholder engagement, beyond
those actions that are already being addressed.
EBM selects Civil Society and Community
partners that are well-established, have a good
reputation for effective and efficient service
provision and are actively and positively involved
in the local community. EBM works with these
partners to ensure that its interventions create
sustainability within the partner, rather than
creating or encouraging a dependency culture.
EBM also looks to work to external standards of
environmental and social sustainability, being a
signatory of the United Nations Global Compact
and it encourages other Companies to do the
same through its active role in local business
organisations such as the Korangi Association of
Pakistan, the Korangi Industrial and Trade Estate
and the Employers’ Federation of Pakistan. EBM
also looks for opportunities to work with local
and national government to encourage this
agenda. Although EBM does not undertake or

get involved in lobbying or other political activity

(and makes no financial or in-kind contributions
to any politicians or political parties), it has
partnered with the local Government for the
School Adoption programme (see page 19) and
has as been a contributor to the governmentsponsored
Forum on best-practice governance
arrangements for family-owned corporations.
EBM receives no financial assistance from the
Government for these or any other programmes,
but feels it has a responsibility to be a partner
in the development of Pakistan and its people.
EBM also believes that sustainability is not simply
about initiatives or programmes that are
undertaken, but also about the culture and
behaviour of its people. As a result, EBM takes
a firm stand against corruption and corrupt
practices and as such ensures that all employees
read and sign the EBM code of ethics. Further,
EBM requires all contracts that may include any
family connection or other conflict of interest
to be approved by the Board of Directors. As a
result, EBM has never knowingly been involved
in an act of corruption.
EBM also ensures that it complies with all
national laws and regulations and relevant
international frameworks and standards and has
never been sanctioned or fined for noncompliance
of any legislation or regulation.

Healthy Eating
We operate in an ever changing and increasingly
complex food environment. In its Global Strategy
on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, the World
Health Organisation ( WHO) calls for
governments, business and other stakeholders
to work together to promote healthier diets,
nutrition and exercise. This Global Strategy has
these recommendations for food industries:
l Promote healthy diets and physical activity
l Limit the levels of saturated fats, trans-fatty
acids, free sugars and salt in existing products
l Continue to develop and provide affordable,
healthy and nutritious choices
l Consider introducing new products with
better nutritional value
l Provide consumers with adequate and
understandable product and nutrition
information
l Practice responsible marketing

l Issue simple, clear and consistent food labels,

evidence-based health claims
l Provide information on food composition
l Support physical activity programmes
l Provide workplace intervention on health
and well-being.
We endorse this strategy and are working with
stakeholders like the Ministry of Food, Agriculture
& Livestock (Pakistan) along with URS UK to
develop solutions against these
recommendations.
Safe Food Conference
EBM endorses and promotes Food Safety in
Pakistan through the Safe Food Pakistan initiative
undertaken in partnership with United Registrar
of Systems Limited UK. Over the past few years,
Safe Food has hosted six conferences on the
subject of healthy and safe eating with broad
participation from scientists, regulators,
nutritionists and other local and international
experts.
In the year 2007 the Safe Food Conference
focused on “Public Private” partnerships to help
regulate Food Safety in developing countries.
The 2007 conference was held in the city of
Islamabad, Pakistan. Local experts along with
speakers from Ireland and Spain presented
papers on effective frameworks for the regulation
of Food Safety. The Ministry of Food Agriculture
and Livestock Pakistan partnered EBM and URS
at this event.
Our commitment to Food Safety is highlighted
by our continuing financial support amounting
to over 8 million rupees towards the Safe Food
Pakistan initiative.
Establishing a model canteen for better eating
habits
EBM further extended the Safe Food concept by
revamping and upgrading a School Canteen at
the Mama Parsi School in Karachi. A total
donation of Rs.1.2 million was made to the
school, to assist them in upgrading their cooking,
heating and storage equipment at their canteen.
This infrastructure improvement was backed
by extensive training of canteen staff on food
handling, storage and personal hygiene. Based
on recommendations by EBM and URS nutrition
experts, the Mama Parsi school management
discontinued the sale of high-sugar content
carbonated drinks at their canteen.

Health Care Support

EBM has always believed that healthy bodies are
a fundamental right and a key enabler of a healthy
mind and of fulfilling one’s dreams. Therefore,
EBM partners with some of the largest and most
significant charitable healthcare providers in
Pakistan and has contributed over 7 million
rupees in 2006/07 to organisations such as
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, Sahara for Life,
the Sindh Institute of Urology and
Transplantation, the National Institute for
Cardiovascular Diseases and the Child Health
and Education Foundation.
Combining support for Children’s Health
and Education
EBM has supported the Child Health and
Education Foundation (CHAEF) since its
foundation in 2004, which has lead to the
treatment of over 500,000 patients and the
education of 500 children over that period. In
2006/07 alone, EBM invested nearly 1.9 million
rupees to support CHAEF to deliver health and
education services to the poorest communities
of Karachi through their combined centres of
education during the day and medical treatment
in the afternoon. EBM has not only provided
funds to support the establishment and ongoing
support of these centres, but has also invested
in the fundraising capability of CHAEF, allowing
it to draw on further sponsors and supporters
to build towards a sustainable platform.
Mr. Syed Naeem-ul-Hassan, Chairman and CEO
of CHAEF, declared that “you will not find a
company like EBM in the whole of Pakistan”.
Responding to the need for healthy hearts
EBM has been working with the National Institute
of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) for many
years and in 2006/07 was delighted to contribute
almost 1.4 million rupees of donations, purchase
of equipment and Zakat contributions. Part of
this support led to the refurbishment of the
Emergency Room in their Karachi Hospital,
ensuring that over 100,000 patients every year
get the excellent care that they need to keep
their hearts healthy and their dreams alive.
“EBM always responded when we needed help”
Ms. Zareena Asghar, Honorary Secretary of NICVD

EBM’s core belief of “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds”,

we have been a pioneer in supporting and sponsoring
Sports & Leisure activities in Pakistan. Our first
support of Sports activities in Pakistan dates back to
the televising of the World Cup Final in Munich in
1973 and the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” boxing
match between Mohammad Ali and George Foreman
in 1974. EBM was the first company in Pakistan to
sponsor Cricket, Hockey, Tennis and Golf in the early
years of PTV and has also added Swimming, Snooker,
Bridge, Blind Cricket and the Special Olympics to its
portfolio of support for sporting activities in Pakistan.
EBM has continued this year in its tradition of
promoting and encouraging healthy sporting activities
amongst the youth of our country and also especially
for women and disadvantaged groups. EBM believes
that Sports & Leisure activities should be supported
not only to develop the health of the nation, but also
to instill a life of discipline, dedication, commitment,
pride and achievement in its participants and
supporters.
Sports encourage us to achieve our goals and
objectives and fuels our innate desire to rise above
mediocrity and achieve things for ourselves, our
communities and our nation. This is a way of life
that goes beyond sports in anything and everything
we do…it thus goes beyond the individual level and
has long-term positive ramifications at a national and
international level.
EBM has shown this belief in action, contributing
over 8.5m Rupees in sponsorships and donations to
Sports & Leisure activities.
5th National Blind Cricket Competition
EBM has been supporting the Pakistan Association
of the Blind (PAB) since 2004 and this year EBM
sponsored the National Blind Cricket Tournament
for the 4th consecutive year. Six teams from four
provinces participated in the
competition and although Sindh Green
won the final match against Punjab
Red by nine wickets, all of the players
participated with good spirits and were
all considered winners in their own
right.
EBM is proud to support PAB in
creating awareness, training and
rehabilitation of the blind community
in Pakistan.
National Swimming Championships
EBM has been sponsoring various
swimming events for several years,
including men’s, women’s and children’s swimming
championships. EBM sponsors different events in
different years to broaden the impact and increase
the awareness of swimming across the nation. In
2006/07 EBM sponsored both the 46th Sindh Open

and Junior Swimming Championships and the 14th

National Mens Junior Swimming Championships
through the Sindh Swimming Association, which
seeks to organise and promote swimming throughout
Sindh without any major government assistance.
EBM is an avid supporter of swimming for its ability
to involve people of all ages, genders, backgrounds
and abilities.

Education
Education is a basic human right, but
unfortunately many people in our country are
deprived of this blessing because of poverty.
They forego education in search of livelihood
and means of survival at an age when they should
have a book in their hands. EBM is responding
to this desperate situation through working with
local schools to improve educational standards
and in companies and prisons with those that
missed out on an earlier opportunity to learn
how to read and write. But EBM also believes
that education should not be limited to basic
schooling but should continue to help people
realise their potential throughout their lives and
so has also invested in a leadership development
school and various management development
initiatives. EBM has invested over 10 million
rupees in educational initiatives in 2006-07.
Adopting local schools
Many of the schools located in the Korangi area
around the EBM site were in a woeful state, with
inadequate buildings and facilities to deliver the
quality education that their children deserved
and limiting the schools’ abilities to see the
dreams of these children fulfilled. EBM worked
with the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy and
the Karachi City Government to invest over
3 million rupees to upgrade the facilities of
5 schools, such as the installation of drinking
water and proper sanitation, purchase books
and learning materials and to employ support
staff to keep the schools safe, clean and in good
working order. Thanks to EBM’s involvement,
1000 more children have a chance of seeing
their dreams fulfilled.
Bringing the light of education to those that
have never had it
Because of the poverty of educational provision
in many parts of our country, many talented
individuals are lost in the darkness of illiteracy
and education for them remains only as a

privilege that they hope to give to their children.

In response to this, EBM has been working with
Literate Pakistan to reach over 150 people inside
10 jails in Karachi and Hyderabad to spread
literacy, encourage positive social and mental
behaviour of the inmates and to give them hope
for their future.
Education through entertainment
Theatre has always been regarded as one of the
most powerful mediums of education for
children, providing a multi-sensory experience
to stimulate the brain which leaves a strong and
long-lasting impression on all those that interact
with it. As a strong supporter for children’s
development and education, EBM has entered
into a collaboration with Talat Hussain, one of
the country’s biggest and most respected names
in the entertainment industry, to launch a
permanent children’s theatre in Karachi. The
Peek Freans Children’s Theatre works in schools
and with schools to promote and encourage
theatre and to put on displays of various theatrical
performances to entertain, promote positive
moral and cultural values, to educate young
people.
Bringing Leadership to Life for Young People
EBM has been sponsoring the Young Leaders’
Conference for the past 4 years because we
believe that conferences like these give a huge
boost to the psychological development of young
minds.
Development of Human Capital
As a high growth consumer goods business, we
trade in a competitive and dynamic environment.
The expectations of our consumers, shareowners,
customers, external bodies and society are
growing and evolving all the time, as are the
needs and expectations of our employees. Our
Human Capital Strategy helps us to ensure that
we can meet these current and future business
needs.
Our goal on sustainability is to nurture our
Company as ‘Place to be’, where people are
proud to work and are committed and engaged.
EBM’s Human Capital Strategy is built around
five core values:
• Labour rights and dignity at work
• Health and Safety in the workplace
• Fair remuneration
• Diversity
____________________________________________________________________ 22
_

Enhancing Competitiveness & Employability in Korangi Industrial Area

• Opportunity for development

Core Labor Rights and Dignity at Work
We fully support the rights and opportunities of
all people to seek, obtain and hold employment
with dignity and without any form of
discrimination. To this end, it is the policy of
EBM to make every effort to provide a working
environment free from all forms of employee
intimidation and offensive behaviour.
In this respect the Company will not condone
any form of harassment. It is therefore against
the policy of EBM for any employee to harass
another employee in any way. Such conduct will
not be tolerated and appropriate disciplinary
action, including dismissal for serious offences,
will be taken against any employee who violates
the policy.
Health and Safety in the Workplace
Improving our safety performance is the top
management’s utmost priority. We have
developed various programmes to help improve
our safety performance and are reviewing and
monitoring this performance more closely than
ever before. Our ultimate goal is to embed a
zero accident culture.
In 2007, we conducted a detailed HSE Risk
Assessment study which identified key areas of
concern. The Risk Assessment study was followed
by an update of our Environment Health and
Safety Policy, Management Processes and
Procedures.
To help sustain HSE performance, our HSE
system is certified to the IS0 14001 standard for
Environmental Management and is in the process
of attaining certification to the BS 18001
Occupational Health & Safety Standard.
Fair Remuneration
EBM is not just a top company but a top employer
too because EBM believes in providing fair
compensation and benefits to the employees.
EBM attracts and hires the best talent by
providing market based salary and benefits to
the new hires, develop them by training, evaluate
them by performance appraisals and reward
them in both intrinsic and extrinsic manner.
In this manner, EBM for the first time
implemented the best pay for performance
programme called Performance Development
Review (PDR) process in the year 2007, in which
employees are rewarded and promoted on the

basis of their performance.

EBM also believes in the true spirit of internal
equity and market based compensation and
benefits. In this regard, a comprehensive salary
survey has been done by EBM with the help of
consultancy firms including Ferguson Associates
Management Consultants and Abacus HR
Consultants. In terms of internal equity, EBM
treats all the employees equally i.e. the employees
with the similar profile and position have similar
compensation and benefits and all new
inductions are done by evaluating this internal
equity.
EBM does not restrict the fair compensation for
the permanent employees but the company
rewards and recognises the contractual staff also.
Diversity
Our greatest strength lies in the diversity among
employees. This diversity is an edge among
competitors, an asset for productivity and in
leading and innovating in all the aspects of the
business.
We consider diversity to be as one of our
organisation’s core values. The company believes
that the people with different backgrounds,
cultures, experiences and work can make a
difference and break the status equilibrium of
the market. Our aim is to utilise the best human
resources by understanding the true concept of
diversity.
Nobody dealing with EBM, whether employee
or applicant, will receive less favourable treatment
on the grounds of race, colour, religion,
nationality, ethnic origin, gender, age, marital
status, sexuality or disability.
Opportunity for Development – Investors in
People
At EBM, learning and development
is about providing opportunities for
our people to enhance their
capabilities and to realise their full
potential.
We view learning and development
as a shared responsibility between
the company and employees, with
the company providing the resources
and individuals providing the
essential motivation and
commitment. Our human resource
function designs learning and

development activities to help in

this, with a focus on increasing the
knowledge, experience, skills and
behaviour of individuals and teams.
Part of our line managers’ responsibility is to
identify the training needs of his or her direct
reports, match those needs to training and
development opportunities and ensure that
learning is transferred back into the workplace.
Our commitment to learning and development
has been independently verified by our
recognition to the international Investors in
People standard. The Investors in People standard
is a business improvement tool designed to
advance an organisation’s performance through
its employees. Investors in People sets a level of
good practice for improving a company's
productivity by maximising the potential of its
people. EBM was recognised to this standard in
November 2005 and continues to maintain this
certification.

Environmental Performance
Throughout all of our business activities, we
strive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
develop and spread the use of technology and
materials that produce a minimal burden on the
environment.
We try to reduce our environmental burden by
getting an accurate picture of the impact that
our business activities and product life cycles
have on the environment: starting with design
and development, through raw materials
procurement, production, sale, transport and
distribution and finally to product disposal and
recycling. In this manner, EBM follows the
Precautionary Approach (Article 15 of the Rio
Principles) and seeks to be proactive in its
approach to risk management in operational
planning and implements the highest
environmental standards at all stages of
processing and operations.
We are also placing a special focus on elimination
of fluorocarbons used in cooling systems and
the use of electricity (resulting in CO2 emissions),
two factors we believe are most responsible for
ozone depletion and global warming.
Meeting World Class Standards
In the year 2006-07, all of our final emissions
met the requirements of the Pakistan National

Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS). In

addition to NEQS compliance, all of EBM’s
policies and principles have been translated into
practice through management systems that help
us recognise and control the most significant
aspects of our operations. These systems are
used to set targets and to follow-up on
performance related to environmental issues,
food safety, occupational health/safety,
information security and hygiene. As a result,
EBM is certified to ISO 14001, HACCP, ISO 9001
and ISO 27001 by United Registrar of Systems
Limited UK.
We employ the use of the latest waste
management technology at all emission points.
As a result, 100% of our liquid waste passed
through our in-house effluent treatment plant
before being released at NEQS compliant levels
to the municipal stream.
Efficiency in Power Supplies
Energy is an essential part of the biscuit
manufacturing process. EBM’s energy supply
strategy focuses on the long term. Our approach
to energy use, production and fuel mix supports
actions to help mitigate climate change. Based
on the premise that gas fired generation has a
lower impact on climate change than
conventional power production, 100% of EBM’s
energy requirements in the year 2007 was derived
from energy efficient and low emission gas
powered generators. Apart from drastically
reducing our carbon footprint, our captive energy
programme reduced the burden on the national
grid, which is currently facing a power deficit.
How we performed - Environmental Data
Our environmental performance is measured
against well defined goals and targets. Monitoring
is conducted by our in-house teams as well as
through a third party test laboratory. Given
below are our key environmental performance
figures. This data is based on third party tests
performed by an external agency GEL
Laboratories, Karachi.

Environmental Activity

In addition to maintaining compliance with

applicable laws and regulations, we are
constantly exploring ways to reduce our
environmental impact, keep our workplace safe
and ensure that our products can be enjoyed
with confidence.
Some highlights
Our environmental action programme is
designed to drive performance beyond regulatory
compliance and toward reduced costs,
competitive advantage and sustainable
manufacturing. The programme provides a
focused and disciplined way to prioritise
environmental and energy issues and
demonstrate progress in key areas of global
environmental concern.
Our environmental programme and objectives
set aggressive performance targets from 2006
through 2007. Our business strove for
performance improvement to achieve the
following:
l Environmental Management System (EMS)
Objective: maintain an EMS consistent with
the International Organisation for
Standardisation’s (ISO) 14001 EMS standard.
l Energy-Efficiency Objective: Achieve worldclass
process energy-efficiency benchmarks
for our manufacturing process.
l Water-Use Objective: Reduce the amount of
process water we use and improve the quality
of waste water.

lPackaging and Waste Reduction Objective:

Achieve a reduction in total transport and
final product packaging for our business while
working towards recycling 100% of nonhazardous
solid waste from operations.
Environmental Excellence Award
We feel privileged to have received Pakistan’s
environmental excellence award for the fourth
straight year. This award has been presented to
EBM by the National Forum for Environmental
and Health, in recognition of our best practices
in waste reduction and environmental
management. Our annual successes in waste
management are the culmination of numerous
small projects undertaken by a number of teams
and individuals across the organisation and
supply chain.
Waste – reduce, reuse, recycle... rethink
As a Company, we continue to think about how
we can design waste out at the source and
reinvent the way we do things.
Initiatives include the separation of waste at
source, recycling initiatives, reusable packaging
materials used by suppliers and commercial sales
of non hazardous waste as input to other
businesses. One of the most successful
programmes is our ability to sell corrugated
ingredient boxes and packaging materials into
a secondary market for resale, sales from
packaging material sales generated over Rs. 20
million in revenue over the year 2006-07.
We are working collaboratively with our suppliers
to help make their own systems more effective
and to bring about improvements. This includes
holding meetings with individual suppliers and
with supplier groups and working with them to
develop our ethical sourcing standards and
sustainability. Working with suppliers in this way
also helps them create value for themselves and
their organisations. We held a number of supplier
training workshops in 2007 to share best practices
in environmental management and resource
conservation.

Involvement in the Wider Community

EBM is passionate about its focus on healthy
bodies, healthy minds, but does not want to
restrict its social responsibility activities only to
these areas. As such, EBM contributed over
3 million rupees to other causes throughout

2006-07 including the Noor-e-Ali Trust, Citizens

Police Liaison Committee and Roshni Homes.
Supporting One Woman’s efforts to transform
her village for the better
The village of Rane Ji Wandh in rural Sindh has
been transformed by the efforts of one woman,
Aami. Having taught herself and the other
women folk of the village to read, she captured
the struggles of life for the rural poor on
documentaries (broadcast on Aaj TV in August
2006) and campaigned for better facilities for
the 1200 people living in the area. EBM was
proud to partner with this remarkable woman
and a donation of Rs. 450,000 provided a solar
water pump to the village and solar panels
providing electricity to several homes in the
village. These contributions have saved the
women of the village from hours of hard labour,
freeing them up to devote to income generation
and agricultural projects to provide for their
families. Well done Aami and well done Rane Ji
Wandh!
Commitment to Human Rights
EBM is an enthusiastic supporter of the efforts
of the Government of Pakistan to support the
rights and opportunities of disadvantaged groups
as enshrined in external regulations and our
own internal Code of Ethics and is proud to
count a significant proportion of disabled people
in our workforce. EBM ensures that all of its
sites are compliant with legislation such that
women and disabled workers can access work
and associated facilities and has never been
subject to any accusations of discrimination.
EBM is a vocal opponent of Child and Forced
labour and checks that none of its employees
are within these categories through its application
and selection process.
Looking Forward

EBM is proud to be a responsible corporate

citizen, but we do not want to rest on our history
and our current involvement. EBM wants to
improve the way it acts as a responsible corporate
citizen and to increase the impact of its
contribution.
To improve the way it acts, in 2007-08 EBM will
further focus and refine its environmental and
social interventions to ensure that they are
aligned with EBM’s strategic objectives and that

____________________________________________________________________ 30
_

they make full use of EBM’s resources and

people. To ensure that EBM is doing this in a
robust and transparent way, the Company
intends to have a full independent audit of its
sustainability report for 2007-08.
EBM will further engage with its various
stakeholders to ensure that we are meeting their
expectations and to encourage other companies
in our value chain to share in this vision of
corporate responsibility. For example, EBM will
be further exploring how to emphasise these
matters (e.g. ethical practice, environmental
sustainability, human rights) in our supplier
contracts and relationships.
EBM also plans to increase the value of our
contributions to over 40 million rupees in
2007-08 and will be seeking partnerships that
will deliver strategic and sustainable impacts for
the neediest and most disadvantaged in our
society.
EBM is also looking at ways we can leverage
more than just our financial strength as part of
our sustainability approach. As such, EBM
inaugurated its own Centre of Excellence in
2006, not just as a Research and Development
capability for EBM, but as a facility to enhance
the knowledge capital of Pakistan in food
technology and safety. As such, EBM has already
welcomed academics and researchers to use the
facilities with no direct benefit to EBM and will
be exploring further opportunities to utilise this
resource (and others) for the benefit of Pakistan
and its people. EBM invested over 20 million
rupees in this facility in 2006-07 (not included
in its Social Responsibility figures) and hopes
that this facility will become a cornerstone of
helping the food industry in Pakistan and through
that the health and welfare of its people.
But most of all, EBM looks forward to another
year of seeing lives changed, of enabling healthy
bodies, healthy minds and of more dreams being
fulfilled.

our children.
Despite increased pressure on our profit
margins due to significantly increased raw
material costs, EBM increased its overall
investment in sustainability and social
responsibility by 12% to over Rs. 42 million,
exceeding our previously stated commitment
to spend Rs. 40 million.
In this year’s report we highlight significant
projects in the theme of healthy bodies,
including Rs. 8.6 million on healthy eating
projects as diverse as the national Safe Food
conference and our various product
stewardship activities. We describe how our
investment of over Rs.11 million in healthcare
support is providing health facilities to those
who cannot afford it and encouraging children
to engage with and support healthcare
provision for the poor. And, we pick up on
some of the Rs. 8 million we spent on sports
and fitness sponsorships, aiming to broaden
involvement in exercise and sports activities,
including Swimming Championships and
Blind Cricket.

everything that we are.

Enhancing Competitiveness & Employability in Korangi Industrial Area

Dear stakeholder,
There can be little doubt that in the global
socio – economic environment today, it is the
firm responsibility of ethical companies to
play a key role in enhancing and shaping the
economic and social progress of the countries
they are operating in. It must be understood
that all this makes good business sense, as
the sustainable development of a company’s
business is today inextricably linked to the
sustainable growth of society itself. And this
can only be done by inculcating and practicing
core values and best practices that contribute
to the prosperity of companies and hence
positively impact the growth of a country.
Just as globalisation is a reality today whether
one is a proponent or an opponent of it, so is
the need to incorporate sustainable business
practice.
In time to come only the best will survive:
whether it is in the manufacturing or the
services sector. The best will be those who
strategically pursue the triple bottom line
approach to business – that is a business
growth model based on the welfare and
growth of society at large (people), the
preservation of the environment and precious
natural resources (planet) and the pursuit of
profitability (profits) in an ethical way.
Three years ago, we published our first
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report
in which we enunciated our vision as a
corporate citizen. Our CSR performance and
its impact has improved dramatically since.
This year’s CSR Report provides an
assessment of EBM’s business, social and
environmental performance in 2007 – 08
wherein the Company’s central theme was
set-around:

a brighter future for them and their children.
EBM has presented those projects and
initiatives that are of most significance to our

impact. If you would like to find out more

* This report is for the EBM Fiscal Year July 2007 to June 2008 and covers all of EBM’s divisions and units
(although not suppliers or subsidiaries). The Report for 2006-07 was published in December 2007.
The report covers all aspects of EBM’s sustainability activities and defines where the company (or its employees with
the
company’s explicit support) is engaged in environmental or social sustainability activities, prioritising those that EBM
believes
have had the most significant impact. Data management techniques have been described (where appropriate) in the
body of this
report. Environmental data has been analysed (where possible) by independent laboratories, and EBM intends to have a
full
independent audit of its sustainability report for the year 2008-09.

Sustainability Vision
Investing for a Brighter Future
EBM is Pakistan’s leading biscuit company
with heart and soul. This description reflects
how sustainability and social responsibility
lie at the heart of our identity and our purpose
as a company. This description shows that
we are a company with a vision for investing
for a brighter future, not just for ourselves
and our business model, but for our
employees, our customers, our suppliers, our
local communities, and for the nation.
Understanding that this vision has to start
with ourselves, we ensure that our products
comply with international standards and meet
the highest possible standards for hygiene
and quality. We have also taken steps to ensure
our distributors take their responsibility for
quality seriously and that our consumer are

as informed as possible regarding the benefits

and risks of food consumption.
For this reason, appreciating EBM as a
manufacturer of biscuits, we recognise the
national challenges of poor hygiene, of low
food standards and the poor health or our
people. And so we are responding to that
challenge by investing for a brighter future
in healthy bodies, by which we mean food
safety, health and fitness.
Building on our core vision statements,
principles and values, we recognise the need
to share the responsibility for the social
upliftment and development of Pakistan,
improving the lives of the underprivileged.
Looking at the needs of our nation, we believe
that the most critical for a bright future for
the people of Pakistan is education, and so
we are investing for a brighter future in
“healthy minds”, education for children, for
our employees, and more widely in best
practice and leadership within Pakistan.
We also understand our responsibility in our
processes, thus investing in a brighter future
for a healthy environment, ensures our
processes are as clean and environmentally
friendly as possible, and investing in the local
and wider environment as opportunities arise.
This year, we have also focused on ensuring
our investments have been applied efficiently
and effectively; concentrating on fewer more
strategic initiatives and projects, rather than
reactive donations.
EBM believes in a brighter future for the
people of Pakistan. Investing in healthy
bodies, healthy minds and a healthy
environment we are doing our part to make
that brighter future a reality.

Sustainability Management Approach

Being a valued and respected member of
society isn’t inherited, it’s earned. This means
that, year in and year out, we must understand
the impact we have on the world, the
environment, the economy and individuals.
We believe it’s important to make sustainable
business practice part of everyday life at
EBM. To achieve this, EBM has a designated
function with the assigned responsibility for
managing Corporate Responsibility at every
level of the business - from our Board right
down to our management teams in our factory.
EBM’s Corporate Responsibility approach is
directly linked to our Business Principles.
These spell out the high standards of conduct
we work to and are aligned to commonly
accepted global standards, like the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights,
International Labour Organisation
conventions and Millennium Development
Goals, and EBM is a signatory of the UN
Global Compact.
Everyone at EBM is expected to uphold these
principles. It’s the responsibility of all senior
executives and managers to make sure that
they themselves, and their teams, work
according to these principles and confirm
their teams have been informed about the
standards of ethical conduct expected of them.

Enhancing Competitiveness & Employability in Korangi Industrial Area

We have adopted a range of CSR policies,

processes, systems, guidelines, and standards
which has been developed with the input from
external stakeholders. EBM believes that it
is important to engage a wide variety of
stakeholders as partners, both in delivery of
business actions and also in the delivery of
social and environmental responsibility
actions.
In light of this, EBM seeks to engage with
its stakeholders through:
n An annual supplier round-table to discuss
social and environmental sustainability
concerns
n The provision of postal, website and (freeof-
cost) telephone channels for customers
to raise any concerns or questions
n Employee suggestion box
n Regular interactions with Civil Society and
Community Partners through conferences
(e.g. Safe Food Conference, Environment
Conference) and project dialogues
To date, because of EBM’s proactive
approach, no significant environmental or
social responsibility issues or concerns have
been raised through its stakeholder
engagement, beyond those actions that are
already being addressed.
EBM selects Civil Society and Community
Partners that are well-established, have a good
reputation for effective and efficient service
provision, and are actively and positively
involved in the local community. EBM works
with these partners to ensure that its
interventions create sustainability within the
partner, rather than creating or encouraging
a dependency culture.
In sustainability, as in all areas of our
businesses, we look to learn from and better
understand the world around us. We share
what we learn across our businesses and use
it to inform our decision making. We look to
our external environment as well,
benchmarking ourselves against our peers
and competitors and listening to the concerns
of our stakeholders. We continue to embed
this learning in our plans, activities, business

systems and processes.

Investing in Food Safety

For 40 years, as an industry leader, EBM has
been committed to providing safe, quality
food that people can trust. Our history of
developing innovative and effective food
safety systems has been recognised as gold
standards in the local industry and as stateof-
the-art by academia and government
regulators. These innovations are essential in
maintaining the confidence, customers and
consumers have in the EBM brand.
Our commitment to innovation helps ensure
that each product leaving the EBM plants
either meets or exceeds customers’ and
consumers’ expectations.
EBM participates in a number of national
food safety and quality programmes, as well
as its own Safe Food Conference. Safe Food
has been running since 2002 and is aimed at
helping educate food processors, customers
and consumers on leading trends and practices
in food safety.
To build on our excellent record in food safety,
we are progressively raising the quality of
our manufacturing to a standard more akin
to the pharmaceutical industry. In the last
three years, we invested Rs. 1.6 billion of
capital investments as part of our facility
upgrade.
Our success in food safety is measured by
the reductions in product rejections which
has gone down from 0.08% of total volume
in 2006-07 to 0.06% in 2007-08.
Ensuring Safe and Quality Food at our
Facilities
From our factories and laboratories to our
product and process monitoring programmes
to our Hazard Analysis and Critical Control
Point (HACCP) verification processes, our
dedication to safe, quality food is evident in
the programmes and controls we have to
protect our products.
The safety of our products is closely
monitored by a Food Safety Team located at

each facility. These multi-departmental teams

systematically evaluate the key aspects of the
production processes to prevent potential food
safety issues. The Food Safety Team then
works with the facility to develop, implement
and monitor controls and procedures to drive
continuous improvement.
Food Safety Research
Our commitment to food safety is not a point
of competition between manufacturers. We
openly share our food safety research and
technologies with peers and colleagues.
To support Food Safety Research, EBM
established the Center of Excellence in 2006
to partner with the government, academia,
trade associations and other industry members
to sponsor cutting edge food safety research.
Internal and External Food Safety Audits
and Inspections
Our facilities receive routine internal quality
assurance and food safety assessments. These
assessments are conducted by an audit team,
independent of the location being inspected.
Audits focus on:
n Critical food safety elements
n Sanitation performance
n Company policy adherence
n Regulatory compliance
Each facility is audited in accordance with
the company’s Comprehensive Food Safety
Management Programme based on the
HACCP Principals and ISO 22000.
Our facilities also receive periodic
independent third-party audits of their food
safety systems.
These reviews are performed by an
internationally recognised independent
auditing firm, United Registrar of Systems
Limited. Government Food Safety Inspectors
also provide independent inspection reviews
of our production facilities.
Safe Food
One of EBM’s highest priority CSR
programmes is the annual Safe Food
Conference. Safe Food 2008 - A Consumers’
Perspective was held in Karachi, Pakistan,
with over 500 delegates from the food industry

were present at the occasion. Speakers from

the Irish Food Safety Authority, Consumer
Protection Council, Pakistan Medical
Association and Karachi University spoke at
the conference.
Since its inception in 2002, EBM’s Safe Food
initiative has been attended by over 4,000
people. It has also contributed to the
publication of over 30 papers regarding Food
Safety. This annual conference has motivated
over 20 companies to adopt and be certified
by the ISO 22000/HACCP standards.

Investing in the Health of the Nation

Within the theme of “healthy bodies”, the
health of people (and in particular those less
fortunate) is a main concern for our nation.
As a result, EBM has consistently invested
over Rs. 11 million in 2007-08 to those
institutes providing healthcare, particularly
to the disadvantaged.
Providing healthcare to those who cannot
afford it
EBM has proudly supported the Child Health
and Education Foundation (CHAEF) since
2004, and has over that time has paid for the
construction and running costs of a primary
healthcare facility in one of the more
impoverished areas of Karachi. EBM has
also supported CHAEF with fund-raising
efforts to engage other sponsors and ensure
their long-term sustainability. The clinic saw
almost 40,000 patients in 2007-08, and
provided treatment to cure patients suffering
a wide variety of conditions, including
Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, various infections,
and family planning. The effect of the clinic
has been both on the health of local residents
(incidents of common and seasonal diseases
has been reduced) and on the health awareness
of patients through increased community
contact and education.
Civil Hospital School campaign
The majority of Pakistan’s population depends
on the government for its healthcare needs,
but unfortunately the magnitude and extent

of these programmes are not enough to

support the large and growing needs of our
nation, especially the impoverished areas. In
light of this, EBM partnered with the Civil
Hospital Poor Patients’ Aid Society (PPAS)
in 2007-08 to raise awareness and funds from
52 schools and 40,000 children to support
the largest hospital in Sindh to provide free
care for the poor and needy. EBM’s
investment paid for the much needed
equipment and for the schools’ programme,
which in turn generated Rs. 400,000 of further
investment for the Hospital.
We also continue to support long-term partners
who believe in providing quality healthcare
to those less fortunate. In 2007-08, EBM
supported the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre,
the Aga Khan Hospital, the Sindh Institute
of Urology and Transplantation, Sahara for
Life Hospital, Shaukat Khanum Hospital and
many others.
Investing in the Fitness of the Nation
A further theme of “healthy bodies” is that
of fitness. An area often overlooked within
Pakistan, and an area that is significant for
us as a food manufacturer looking to help our
consumers maintain good health and fitness.
EBM has long had an association with
investment in sports and fitness, from initial
sponsorship of sports activities since the 1970s
across a range of sports including football,
boxing, cricket, blind cricket, hockey, tennis,
golf, swimming, snooker and the paralympics.
In 2007-08, EBM has invested over Rs. 8
million across these, not just because of
sports’ ability to develop fitness and physical
health in those involved, but also because
sports help to instill a life of discipline,
dedication, commitment, pride and
achievement in its participants and supporters.
“Sports encourage us to achieve our goals
and objectives, and fuels our innate desire to
rise above mediocrity and achieve things for
ourselves, our communities, and our nation.
This is a way of life that goes beyond sports
in anything and everything we do it thus goes

beyond the individual level and has longterm

positive ramifications at a national and
international level.”
Saadia Naveed, Deputy Managing Director,
EBM.
“Inspire and be inspired” – The 6th
National Blind Cricket Tournament
Recognising that the physically disadvantaged
have even more barriers to overcome than
most in realising good physical fitness, EBM
has proudly supported the Pakistan
Association of the Blind (PAB)’s National
Blind Cricket Tournament since 2004, both
to stimulate sports and fitness within the blind
community, but also as a motivation and
inspiration for the sighted community to
engage more in sports and fitness activities.
In 2007 over 100 participants from an ever
increasing number of teams from across all
provinces of Pakistan participated, and Okara
defeated Islamabad by 37 runs in a thrilling
competition finale. EBM was proud of all
participants and we recognise the power of
these athletes to inspire us all to get more
involved in sports and fitness activities.
Special Olympics World Games
We proudly hosted a fund-raising gala for the
Pakistan Special Olympics team, an event
that raised Rs.10 million to support our
exceptional special Olympians in entering
the Special Olympics World Summer Games
in Shangai, China.
National Swimming Championships
EBM is an enthusiastic supporter of
swimming for its ability to involve people of
all ages, genders, backgrounds and abilities.
Swimming does not require expensive
equipment, just time and water, and can be a
vital way to develop fitness and good health.
By sponsoring many swimming events
through the years, we hope to broaden the
impact and increase the awareness and
benefits of swimming throughout the nation.
In 2007-08, EBM sponsored the 47th Sindh
Open and Junior Swimming Championship,
the largest open swimming event in Pakistan,
drawing in over 200 participants from 24

schools and clubs.

EBM knows that fitness is a key aspect of a
healthy body, and we are proud and passionate
about our involvement in and sponsorship of
sports and fitness activities.
Investing in Our Children’s Education
One of the most pressing needs of our nation
is quality education for our children. Illiteracy
and poor standards of education are a plague
on our children, and it is impossible to imagine
a brighter future for our nation without
significant improvements in education,
without “healthy minds”. EBM has always
had a passion for education, arising from our
concern to share in the responsibility for the
uplift and development of the people of
Pakistan. With our contributions exceeding
Rs. 9 million in educational activities in
2007-08, we continue to invest heavily in this
area.
Adopting Local Schools
One of the cornerstones of this investment
has been (since 2006) our adoption of 5 local
schools near our Karachi site, which
previously had inadequate and decaying
buildings and infrastructure, and insufficient
materials to deliver the quality education
those children needed to realise a brighter
future. EBM has worked with the Pakistan
Centre for Philanthropy and the City
District Government of Karachi to invest
Rs.1 million this year, taking the total
investment to over Rs. 4 million over the last
2 years. EBM has been involved in the
complete renovation and repairing of these
schools as well as the provision of books and
stationary and other equipment to enable the
education of over 900 pupils. We have also
taken an active role in School Management
Committees to ensure the ongoing
development not just of the facilities, but also
of the quality of education through teacher
training and other initiatives.
Providing education where there was none
EBM is always looking for innovative projects
that provide services to those that need them

most, but that are also cost-effective and

embody quality. The CHAEF combined
health-clinic and primary school fits this
criteria, and EBM has been supporting this
facility since 2004, providing education to
more than 200 children. The school provides
uniforms, books, and access to computers
and other services usually reserved for the
schools of the wealthier and more advantaged
sectors of society. Now, not only are these
children receiving a quality education, but
the cleanliness, hygiene and social behaviour
of these children are improving as a result of
the efforts of the school and its staff.
Bringing Leadership to Life
EBM has sponsored the Young Leaders’
Conference for 5 years - a 6-day conference
for around 240 young people in leadership
development and motivation - and is
determined to help young people realise their
own potential, so that they in turn can help
Pakistan reach for a brighter future.
“YLC helped me to develop a lot of confidence
in myself, which will help me in my career in
my practical life” - Muneeba Hamdani
“YLC has been a life-changing experience
building my leadership ability as the youth
of Pakistan. It is a great contribution towards
upholding the brighter future of our nation”
– Nida Mushtaq
EBM is passionate about education, about
giving children a chance, about investing in
our young people for their future and for a
brighter future for our nation. That is why
EBM sponsors schools, leadership
development, and a whole host of other
education programmes from schools to jails.
Investing in our people
EBM believes that an aligned and motivated
workforce is a prerequisite to achieving
ambitious business objectives. We exercise
care over the health and safety of our
people, and give special focus to personal
and career development.
Employee Alignment
What is good for the company should be

good for our people, and it is our aim to align

the aspirations of our employees with the
goals of the business. EBM strives to share
its success with employees, not only in terms
of reward, but also of personal goals and
career development.
In 2006, EBM performed a management
survey to engage and align our managers and
employees. The survey was conducted by an
independent organisation from the United
Kingdom - Investors in People. Those
surveyed covered a substantial cross-section
of all our employees, more than one in three
of our workforce.
The Investors in People (IIP) recognition
survey confirmed high levels of alignment
when compared to the Investors in People
benchmark. EBM demonstrated good practice
against several key capabilities, including
the quality of its brand, the culture and the
image of the company, the quality of its
management, and personal empowerment.
Our employees appreciate the strength of our
reputation as an employer, and as a dynamic
industry player, and employees liked our way
of working, which is result and output-driven.
Hiring the Best
Hiring the right people is a part of EBM’s
success. A robust hiring process helps ensure
that the skills and experiences of our Team
Members are properly aligned with our
business needs and that we have a talent
pipeline for future leadership opportunities.
Improving Our Recruiting Process
Our HR department redesigned the
recruitment process in 2007-08. By partnering
with our internal customers such as managers,
we were able to develop proactive talent
management plans for each of our business
functions.
Paying a Competitive Wage
EBM offers its employees one of the best
benefits packages in the industry. Our benefits
focus on all aspects of lifestyle changes, good
health, disease prevention, and education.
These programmes not only ensure our
employees are properly compensated for their

workplace contributions, but that they also

support the broad-ranged health and wellbeing
needs of our employees.
Team Member Training & Development
The goal of EBM’s Leadership and
Professional Growth initiatives is to create
an integrated talent-management process that
identifies, develops, deploys and retains
leaders within the organisation. Our HR
department provides a variety of services and
programmes to help prepare our employees
for future leadership challenges.
Investing in Best Practice
EBM has always contributed to the
development of the management of best
practices in Pakistan, both by adopting the
latest management technique and practices
within EBM and via encouraging
management excellence amongst its peers.
Internally, EBM has adopted management
systems and practices for Total Quality-ISO
9001, Food Safety-HACCP & ISO 22000,
Environmental Management-ISO 14001,
Information Security & Business Continuity-
ISO 27001 and People Development-Investors
in People. EBM also runs a company-wide
Enterprise Resource Planning software based
on Oracle.
Externally, EBM has regularly sponsored and
contributed to the Best Practices Day events
held across the country. Here, leading
corporations have shared their practices and
management learnings with the business
community, with an aim to raise the level of
management excellence in the country. To
date, EBM has committed over Rs. 6 million
to the promotion of Management Best
Practices in Pakistan.
Investing in the Environment
EBM believes that companies must take steps
to manage their impact on the natural
environment. As a consequence, we are
committed to conducting our business in a
manner that is sensitive to the environmental
needs of the communities within which we
operate. We aim to achieve this by upholding

defined key environmental standards in all

of our operations and we actively encourage
our business partners to demonstrate similar
levels of commitment.
All our locations fully integrate environmental
management into their operational systems
and procedures. The Board reviews
environmental performance and our policy
annually.
Overview
Managing our impacts to produce a more
positive result is good for the environment
and also brings economic benefits to EBM.
When reviewing our environmental footprint,
it has always been EBM’s policy to focus
particularly on those impacts that have the
most effect on the environment and over
which we have direct control.
Our three most significant environmental
impacts are, in order of magnitude, energy
use, water use and non-hazardous solid waste
production. Energy use is by far our most
significant impact and we therefore give it
the highest priority.
In 2007-08, EBM had undertaken the
following initiatives: timely tuning of gas
generators, reduction in unnecessary lighting,
utilisation of energy saving bulbs, installation
of inverters at mixers creating high torques,
and the insulation of hot water lines.
Management Systems
EBM has a comprehensive environmental
management system based on ISO 14001.
Environmental impacts have been assessed
and an improvement plan based on identified
areas of priority has been implemented.
In addition, EBM has incident, emergency
and contingency plans that are regularly
updated to meet new conditions and
requirements. We also maintain crisis
management procedures to provide an
effective response in case of incident or
emergency.
Customers and Suppliers
EBM works closely with our suppliers to
ensure that our systems meet their
requirements. EBM briefs and audits all

contractors on key environmental issues to

make sure that we, and they, are managing
our environmental impact effectively.
Waste and Recycling
EBM is working hard to reduce waste and
aspires to achieve zero waste through
innovation and creative design. There are a
number of points where waste is generated
due to our operations – in each case, we strive
to find ways to reduce, reuse and/or
recycle what is created.
In our factory, materials, new equipment
and ingredients are delivered to our sites in
some form of packaging which is collected
separately on site and sent away to be recycled.
In cases where packaging materials cannot
be recycled they are sent for disposal.
As a principle we align our work with the
waste hierarchy: reducing waste creation
first, then looking for ways to reuse or recycle
the waste material. If this is not possible, we
try to dispose of waste so that we can recover
and use the energy. Landfill is only used as
a last resort.
Caring for a Greener Future
Environmental Data
Environmental data has been produced for the EBM production factory in Korangi
(Karachi only). We
focus our measurement and improvement efforts on the areas that have the most
environmental and
financial impact. Given below is our performance in areas of environmental significance:

Consumption of Energy
EBM has switched from consuming power from the grid to utilising its own gas - fired
generator. This
decision was taken to help the energy shortage being faced by the country and to switch
to a more
environmentally friendly gas based power source.

Investing in the Wider Community

Although EBM is determined to focus its
activities on its core themes to ensure
efficiency and effectiveness of its social
investments, EBM does not want to restrict
its social responsibility activities to just these
areas. We recognise its responsibility as a
Caring Corporate Citizen to give back to the
community, and as such, have contributed
over Rs. 5 million to other causes throughout
2007-08 to such worthy organisations as the
Karachi Anti-Tuberculosis Society, the
Citizen’s Police Liaison Committee and the
Helpline Trust.
Providing hope to the most destitute
SOS Children’s Villages provide orphaned
and abandoned children an environment that
is as close as possible to a natural home. They
provide a community for the children to find
shelter and support in a family atmosphere,
so that they can receive quality education and
values that enable them to become

contributing members of the society. EBM

was proud to help the Friends of SOS
Children’s Villages in sponsoring a major
fund-raising gala evening in December 2007,
which raised Rs. 7.5 million (net of expenses)
towards the construction of a new village in
Jamshoro, Sindh.
SOS Children’s Villages and EBM, together,
believe that these children have the right to
be loved, cared for and feel safe. We all have
a responsibility to give them hope and dignity
and EBM was proud to play its part.
Investing in Community Infrastructure
Realising that the local transport infrastructure
was insufficient for local residents, commerce
and industry, EBM has invested Rs. 2.8
million over the last three years to construct
and improve a new road causeway in
conjunction with the Korangi Association of
Trade and Industry. This causeway reduces
3 kilometres of travel and saves drivers
Rs. 40 million annually in fuel and wear and
tear of vehicles, not including the countless
hours saved from traffic jams, and the business
and society benefit that result from that. In
2007-08 EBM invested over Rs. 800,000 in
much needed repairs and maintenance to
ensure that this essential facility can continue
to be used for the benefit of the people of
Karachi.
Commitment to Human Rights
EBM is an enthusiastic supporter of the efforts
of the Government of Pakistan to support the
rights and opportunities of disadvantaged
groups as enshrined in external regulations
and our own internal Code of Ethics, and is
proud to count a significant proportion of
disabled people in our workforce. EBM
ensures that all of its sites are compliant with
such legislation so that women and disabled
workers can access work and associated
facilities, and has never been subject to any
accusations of discrimination. EBM is a vocal
opponent of child and forced labour, and
checks that none of its employees are within
these categories through its application and
selection process.

EBM passionately believes that we all have

a responsibility to the people around us, and
is proud to be involved in a diverse set of
projects that are all investing in a brighter
future for those that need it most.

Looking Forward to a Brighter Future

EBM is excited about its role of investing in
a brighter future for all of us and our children,
and is excited about new ways it can grow
and improve these investments. EBM is
committed to year-on-year increases in its
social and environmental investments.
Promising to spend over Rs. 47 million in
2008-09, a further increase of over 12% on
this year’s amount, and we are equally
dedicated in continuing to increase the impact
of this investment.
Continuing to refine and focus its
environmental and social interventions to
increase their alignment with our strategic
objectives and the particular challenges faced
by us as we pursue sustainable development.
EBM will keep on working with its various
stakeholders (employees, suppliers, consumer
groups, local communities and civil society)
to ensure that we are meeting their
expectations. Also we will seek to act as a
catalyst in our industry and more widely in
the nation to further grow our passion and
commitment for social and environmental
sustainability.
In particular, EBM is excited about plans to
further grow its projects and programmes in
the area of food safety, sponsoring the Safe
Food Conference for the 7th year, expanding
schools work around teaching, encouraging
the production and consumption of safe food.
EBM plans to significantly increase its
investments in this space from over
Rs.8 million in 2007-08 to Rs.15 million in
2008-09.
EBM is also proud to continue with many of
the strategic partnerships highlighted within
this report, including CHAEF, Young Leaders’
Conference, Best Practices Conference, and

Blind Cricket Tournament. EBM believes that

only with long-term partnerships can we make
a strategic and sustainable difference to those
that need it most.
EBM is also looking at other ways it can
leverage its assets to support the poor and
disadvantaged of our nation. We will continue
to explore ways that we can use our Centre
of Excellence as more than a research and
development capability for EBM, but also as
a facility to enhance the knowledge capital
of Pakistan in food technology and safety.
We have already welcomed academics,
students and researchers from outside of EBM
to use our facilities, and will be exploring
further opportunities to utilise this resource
(and others) for the benefit of Pakistan and
its people.
EBM has a vision for a brighter future - a
brighter future for our children, for those that
are suffering, and for all the people of
Pakistan. We believe that it can and should
play a part in shaping that brighter future,
that’s why we’re investing heavily in all of
the good causes and projects that are listed
in this report.
