Operation Management Group Assignment - QFD

1. Find the weaknesses of QFD method implemented for both product and service design!
➔ The most important problems and limitations (weakness) when using the QFD
method that already identified by E.S. Jaiswala are:
a. If one tries to use more complex, multi- matrix methods, the size of all matrices
and analysis can be very large. It can also cause difficulties in the
implementation of numerous conclusions resulting from the analysis.
b. The method is mainly of a qualitative nature, it is often very difficult to
categorize them.
c. The connection between customer requirements and technical requirements can
be difficult.
d. The method is not suitable for all applications.

The detailed of disadvantages of QFD method are depend on what specific version
of the method are dealt with, because different version of QFD method may need
different approach.

2. Support a modification of QFD to overcome the weaknesses. You may also propose a
new innovative method!
➔ The flexibility of QFD has facilitated the integration with a new quality enginee r ing
techniques. Regardless, the recommendations are made to increase the capabilities
of QFD method:
a. More care should be taken to the beginning phases of QFD process and new
models should be proposed to improve the evaluation of the input data, before
entering into other HoQs.
b. The effectiveness of QFD should be improved through its integration with
quality engineering techniques that could improve the function of traditiona l
QFD with respect to competitive analysis, determine critical items, correlation
matrixes, number of phases needed, and components of its phases.
c. Enhancements must be designed to take place with a focus on recently problems
associated with QFD, such as ambiguity invoice of customers, managing large
of HoQ, and conflicts between customers requirements.

There is also another tools that can help QFD, called Blitz QFD. Blitz QFD offers four
significant improvements over classical QFD for companies involved in the end-to-
end design, development, and deployment of products, processes, services and
system:

a. Efficiency & speed of analysis

b. Establishing true customer needs and values
c. Relative / propotional values of priority
d. Lean design – effort focused on critical customer business goals and
requirements

The Blitz QFD process encourages the analysis of the customer voice in order to build
unambigious statements about customer needs. The advantages and disadvantages of
each approach are illustrated in:

• Traditional QFD Matrices

Advantages Disadvantages
Exhaustive coverage Exhausting to complete
Timeless Time consuming, risk of giving up
Easily reusable Not useful until completed, but only a
small part is actionable. Not a good
use of scarceresources
Prevents items “falling through the Predetermined elements lock in the
cracks” existing paradigm
Problematic math
• Blitz QFD

Advantages Disadvantages
Faster time to complete Once achieved, must start fresh on
next run-through
Sense of focus on high value items Marginal items may be delegated as
“no change” for now
Can get started on improvements
immediately. No need to wait until
analysis is completed
Upgradeable to traditional QFD
matrices with no loss of data or waste
effort. Can be used simultaneously
Math issues addressed

3. Support your argument with proper literature. write down your literature in the report!
➔ QFD is a quality design and improvement technique and relatively is closer to the
customers than other techniques. QFD has been found to have some substantia l
problems, most of it seem to affect disserve its employment. Example of some of
the most impoertant ones are ambiquity in the voice of cistomers, managing large
HoQ, and conflicts between customer’s requirements. There are still not enough
publications about the use of QFD in service areas. Regardless, comparing with
other quality design techniques, QFD method has the potential to be the most
suitable technique for design of quality from customer’s point of view.
