Problem Set 1 - 25/1/2019

1. A dance troupe of 10 girls and 7 boys performs a dance where only 5 girls and 5 boys are
involved. Describe the probability space corresponding to the above experiment, if
(a) they perform as a group with no regard to order;
(b) they are paired up into girl-boy pairs and stand from left to right;
(c) they stand in 2 rows, with the front row having 3 persons and the back row having 7
persons?

2. An urn contains 4 white and 8 black balls. Two players - A and B - successively draw from the
urn, A first, then B, then A, then B and so on. The winner is the first one to draw a white ball.
Describe the probability space of this experiment and find the win probabilities of each player
assuming that

(a) each ball is replaced after it is drawn;

(b) the withdrawn balls are not replaced.
3. In a government lottery, a player chooses 3 of the numbers from 1 to 20. Given that the lottery
commission randomly selects these 3 winning numbers, describe the probability space. What is
the probability that a player has

(a) all 3 numbers right;

(b) exactly 2 numbers right;
(c) at least 2 numbers right?
4. You are given a fair coin (equal probability of heads and tails showing up). Devise an experiment
using only this coin to produce exactly three equally likely outcomes.
