JOB TITLE: Community Engagement Coordinator (NZ Marine Studies Centre)


DEPARTMENT: Marine Science
DIVISION: Sciences

PRIME FUNCTION

To manage the community engagement programme for the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre (Department
of Marine Science) in a safe and efficient manner.

MAIN OBJECTIVES

 Manage the community events programme and associated staff resources.


 Actively promote the facility and services offered to educational and community groups.
 Oversee facility bookings and ensure that a quality experience is delivered to all visitors.
 Monitor safety of all activities associated with the NZ Marine Studies Centre.
 Assist with development of educational resources.
 Design and lead education experiences for the wider community.

KEY TASKS

Programme Development and Delivery


 Update and further develop the NZMSC community engagement programmes.
 Manage the NZMSC Fishy Web Cam Project.
 Support the Marine Metre Squared National Citizen Science project.
 Direct and help put together community events associate with Seaweek, Science Festival, Wild Dunedin,
Conservation Week, public lectures, short courses etc.
 Lead community programmes and support the school education programmes as required.
 Communicate the activities of the NZ Marine Studies Centre and the Department of Marine Science
Department to the University.
 Assist with wider University of Otago outreach activities as required.
 Forward planning and timetabling of the community engagement activities of the NZMSC.
 Manage facility and programme bookings and user fees.
 Answer inquiries about the facilities and the services offered.
 Write stories, deliver presentations and engage directly with stakeholders to support development of
collaborative programmes.
 Coordinate marketing activities for NZMSC programmes (eg education, Mm2, public events) on a local,
national and international level as required, in consultation with Marketing Advisory Services.
 Manage and organise updates of the web site and social media.
 Assist with the writing of educational resources.
 Assist with evaluation of community events / programmes.
 Assist with the writing of funding proposals.
 Assist with reception duties as required.

Staff Co-ordination
 Co-ordinate variable hour staff rosters and review performance.
 Co-ordinate variable hour staff contracts and monthly time-sheets.
 Organise staff training and development activities for NZ Marine Studies Centre staff.

Health and Safety


 Ensure safety of visitors to the NZ Marine Studies Centre under statutory obligations and departmental
codes of practice.
 Keep up to date with current Health and Safety Practices.

RELATIONSHIPS

Directly responsible to: NZMSC Director.


Overall responsible to: Head of Department, Marine Science.
Supervision of: Variable hours Aquarists/Interpreters.
Functional relationships with: New Zealand Marine Studies Centre staff.
Department of Marine Science staff and students.
External users of the NZ Marine Studies Centre.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITY

 Discretionary spending of up to $500.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

It is expected the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre will operate in an efficient and safe manner and the
performance targets as outlined in the management plan will be met.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 Experience with community engaged learning and teaching.


 Well organised and excellent time management skills.
 Excellent communicator (oral and written).
 Familiarity with marine science and NZ coastal habitats would be an advantage.
 Experience with community events.
 Experience with staff supervision.
 Computer skills (MS office, graphics and web packages useful).
 Degree in Science, Humanities, Commerce or the equivalent would be an advantage.
 Guiding/interpretation/ teaching experience would be useful.
 Hold a current NZ Driver’s license (essential).
