FIRE DISASTER IN
BRAZIL IT’S ALMOST

Yesterday, February 10th, the huge fire was finally controlled in Brazil's Amazon forest and in the city
of Manaus. After three days working on putting out the fire and not letting it spread, the firemen
were able to contain it, but not totally.

The fire was first seen Friday, February 8th, by some local residents of Manaus, who were camping in
the Amazon forest. Right after they spotted it, they returned to the city and contacted the police
officers and the firemen. However, at this point, the city was being taken over by the huge flames.
According to police reports, 101 deaths are confirmed and 79 people are missing. Also, about 300

people got injured. The vast majority of the population was able to
flee the disaster. Nevertheless, the flame damaged a great number
of buildings and houses. Many of these runaways are settled in Enterprise Press
local churches and the injured ones at local hospitals. The Always Taking the Lead
situation at the hospitals is critical, as the doctors are trying to
accommodate all the people that need treatment. "We are working
around the clock to help all the injured people to receive
treatment" says Dr. Mendonça, chief of the Santa Júlia hospital.
Some of the hospitals don't have the infrastructure to
accommodate so many people, which makes the situation critical
as the doctors can't take care of all these people at once.

According to the national police, the fire traveled a distance of 233

kilometers until it reached Manaus and nearby cities. It is said
that the fire originated in the northern forests, near the boundary
of the states of Amazonas and Roraima. However, the winds blew
the fire towards the south, until reaching the capital of the state.
Since Brazil is not used to huge fires as the United States and
Australia for example, they do not have the infrastructure needed
to quickly control these fires, which is why the fire was so strong
and disastrous. Some of the campers that first spotted the huge
flames roaring towards Manaus said that it looked like the hell
was coming in their direction, it was horrifying. The police added
that more than 10000 people fled their homes searching for
shelter; most of them are located in local churches.

Brazil received help from some other countries, including

Argentina, the United States, Chile, Israel, and Mexico. They
contributed to the availability of firefighters and equipments used
in the search for survivors. The main contributors were their
south-American fellows; the Argentinians. There are around 200
Argentinian firefighters into action. At the moment, the
firefighters are still working on completely extinguishing the fire,
which is weak at the moment. Even though they are trying to
extinguish it, their main focus at the moment is to find bodies and Have you ever planned on

Globo, a famous television network from the country: "the fire was partially caused by a peculiar
climate in the region. Temperatures reached 104 °F and the climate was very dry, which is
uncommon in a humid forest as the Amazon. In addition, because of the rural areas in the region and
deforestation, the region becomes less capable of absorbing heat. This definitely contributed to the
start of the fire, as the region and the trees have an important role in absorbing the high
temperatures." Marta adds that the government needs to use its influence and create policies to
reduce pollution in the country. "The climate changes are significant in the country, and it happens
because of a major global issue nowadays; the global warming. Many forests in the country are
affected by that since they can't endure major changes in the climate that they are exposed to. This
can definitely lead to more and more catastrophes like this. The government needs to invest in
projects or create laws that reduce the pollution transmitted in the country, otherwise, this disaster
will be one of many.”

Even though the people are still scared, they are confident they will be able to repair the damage the
fire caused to their cities, and return to their normal lives. "Now that the fire is almost completely
extinguished, we, the people, must work to rebuild the parts of our city that were destroyed" says
José Silveira Lima, a local resident of Manaus.
