LESSON TOPIC: What’s this?

LANGUAGE: toys and colours

In this lesson the pupils will learn to understand:

• How many (planes)? Let’s count!

• What have you got?

In this lesson the pupils will learn to use:

• Yes!/No!

• Toys: doll, ball, car, train, plane, teddy.

• Here’s a (doll).

• I’ve got a (red teddy).

TYPE OF LESSON: Mixed lesson

SKILLS INVOLVED: listening, speaking


AIMS:
A) SPECIFIC AIMS: by the end of the lesson the Ss will be able to:
 identify toys;
 answer simple questions;
 talk about their toys;
 count objects;
 develop speaking and listening skills;
 reproduce short messages.
B) AFFECTIVE AIMS:
 to develop interest and general comprehension of videos and songs in the
English language;
 to create a warm atmosphere in order to offer the background for smooth, easy
conversations between teacher and students;
 to have fun.
ASSUMPTIONS:
The students may:
 be familiar with vocabulary related to the topic;
 have difficulty in pronouncing the words correctly;
 have difficulties in retaining all the new words;
 be noisy when solving the tasks or singing songs.

PROCEDURE

ACTIVITY 1: WARM-UP (2`)


Procedure: T enters the class, greets the Ss and children say the Good-Morning poem. T
checks attendance.
Aims: -to assure the introductive part of the lesson;
- to revise greetings and motivate Ss for the revision poem;
- to prepare children for the lesson;
- to break the ice;
- to make Ss feel comfortable in the class and relax them.

Techniques: questioning
Interaction: T->Ss, Ss>T
ACTIVITY 2: CHECKING THE PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE (4`)
Procedure: T holds up some images and the Ss say the names of the objects.
Aims: - to revise words and patterns from previous lessons;
- to show Ss that they are capable of reproducing the words and structures
they have learnt;
- to capture the Ss` interest and attention.
Skills: speaking
Techniques: flashcards, explanations if necessary
Interaction: T->S; S->T

ACTIVITY 3: INTRODUCING NEW VOCABLARY (8`)


Procedure: Ss open their textbooks and look at the picture from exercise 1. T sets the scene
by asking the Ss what they can see in the image in order to introduce the new lesson WHAT’S
THIS?. Children are encouraged to recognize the toys from some flashcards, then they watch
a short presentation, listen and repeat the words in chorus.
Aims: - to assure a proper transition between the moments of the lesson;
- to capture Ss’ interest and attention;
- to involve the class by focusing Ss’ attention on what they will
practise;
- to introduce vocabulary related to the topic;
- to familiarize with the words.

ACTIVITY 4: WATCH, LISTEN AND CIRCLE (10’)


Procedure: T asks the pupils to watch a video, listen to the song and circle the toys they hear.
T checks their answers, plays the recording again and encourages the pupils to sing along,
while pointing to the toys they have circled.
Aims: - to put the Ss in touch with the topic;
- to make Ss attentive;
- to present toys;
- to develop general comprehension of films and songs in the English
language;
- to learn words related to the topic;
- to develop speaking and listening skills;
- to make Ss sing.

Techniques: video, song, discussion

ACTIVITY 5: COUNT AND SAY ( 4’)


Procedure: T says the instructions for the second exercise from page 34. She explains the
activity and points to the plane and asks: How many planes? Let’s
count! One. She repeats the procedure with the rest of the toys.
Answers: 1 plane, 4 cars, 3 balls, 2 trains
Aims: - to make Ss active;
- to verify the comprehension of the vocabulary words;
- to revise numbers;
- to consolidate the new acquired information;
- to create feedback

ACTIVITY 6: CHOOSE, COLOR AND SAY (5`)


Procedure: T asks the pupils to choose from the picture the toys they’ve got and color them
using the colors they know. Then individual pupils present their toys.
Aims: - to have fun and relax;
- to work individually;
- to create feedback
Skills: listening, speaking
Techniques: conversation
Interaction: T->S; S->T

ACTIVITY 7: WRITE AND MATCH THE TOYS (10`)


Procedure: T gives the pupils a handout and explains them that they have to trace the names
of the toys and match them to the images. When they finish, individual pupils name the toys.
Aims: - to have fun and relax;
- to work individually;
- to consolidate vocabulary related to toys;
- to create feedback
Skills: speaking, writing
Techniques: conversation
Interaction: T->S; S->T

ACTIVITY 8: EVALUATION (2`)


Procedure: T appreciates the active Ss and gives them smiling faces to reward their
participation.
Aims: - to increase Ss` self confidence and encourage them in their study of
English;
- to give feedback to the class;
- to say how well the Ss performed the tasks
Interaction: T->Ss.
