Abstract

The lack of access to safe water and improved sanitation and the associated

health risks is a major issue in some hand to reach water places and very deep

water table beneath the ground. Design on supplying water is only digging

manholes underground to find water, if it is worked over 876 household, it would

seriously damage or lowering of water table and waste a big amount of budget for
water supply. This study represent on how to design the water supply and

sanitation considering water supply and sanitation as an integrated issue and

trying to understand the technical, cultural and institutional aspects analyzing

people’s consumption and government policies and approaches

This study on designing the desired water supply network was conducted in

the place at Salvacion, Daraga, Albay where the data was collected in some

households on how any liters they consume water per day. Quantitative and

qualitative research methods were used.

The study found that most if the rural water supply and sanitation practices,

considered to be safe I theory, are actually a major health risk, without local

people realizing it. However, peoples attention to the issue was drawn and their

practices on water consumption adapted by presenting and discussing the issues

in their preferred tone and languages. Once local people understand the issues,

the adopted/adapted/developed technical solutions suitable to their cultural

context. This study established, evaluated and proposed natural treatment

systems and ecological sanitation as a cheap, effective and sustainable option

supplying the 876 households in this area.

Introduction

Water works for us in many ways, making our lives easier aand more

enjoyable. But we must take great care not to over use and abuse this

precious source.
In the survey, 10 families of over 876 households in Salvacion, Daraga,

Albay were interviewed. The interview was about on how and what ways they

consume their water, some of the households as toilet flushes, showers so in

short, they consume a lot of volume of water per day

This study, we are to design a water supply network, the designing of

water supply tank located 300m away from the place. The required power of

the pump on supplying the water supply tank to prevent draining of water tank

is also included in this study by using discharge pipe of 12 diameter. The

ground elevation of the location of the water tank is 2m above the datum line

(Salvacion, Daraga, Albay).

Methods
-Number of households surveyed: 876 households

-Water consumption per day per household: 300 liters due to daily use like

washing dishes, taking a bath,, drinking water etc, and other uses like watering

plant and washing clothes.

-Maintained pressure head at the end of pipe line: 30m for sustainable flow of

water.

-Designed dimension of water tank: rectangular tank with base dimension of

7m by 7m.
Calculations:

Computing for discharge flow to supply the entire place,

Q = 300lit/day/household x 876 household

Q = 262800 lit/day

Converting liters/day to cubic meters per second thus,

Q = 0.0030 cubic meters/ second

Designed velocity at the discharge pipe,

V = Q/A

0.0030cu.m / s
V=
 (0.30m)^ 2
4

V = 0.042 m/s
Head loss at the discharge pipe due to friction:

HL = fLv^2/2Dg

(0.02)(300m)(0.042m / s) 2
HL =
2(0.30m)(9.81m / s 2 )

HL = 1.79 x10 3 m

Height of steel truss stand for water supply tank is 10m

Calculating the pressure inside the supply tank using Bernoulli’s energy equation,

2 2
PaV V P
 a  za  b  b  zb  HL
 2g 2g 

Pa (0.042m / s) 2
 2m  10m  5m   30m  1.79 x103
 2
2(9.81m / s )

Pressure inside the tank = 127kPa

Designing for efficient power for pump:

Calculate for the velocity of the suction pipe of pump,

Q = 0.0030 cu.m/s

V = Q/A

0.0030m3
V=
 (0.075m) 2
4
V = 0.68 m/s

Calculate for the head loss due to friction of the suction pipe at the pump,

(0.02)( 200m)(0.68m / s) 2
HL =
2(0.075m)(9.81m / s 2 )

HL = 1.26m

Calculating for the head added of the pump using bernoulli’s energy equation at

point from the water table to the water surface of the tank,

2 2
P0 V0 P V
  za  H a  a  a  zb  HL
 2g  2g

127000 Pa
H a  100m   (100m  15m)  1.26m
9810 N / m3

Head added = 29.20m

Calculating for efficient power supply for pump:

Power = QwE

Power = (0.0030cu.m/s)(9810 N/cu.m)(29.20m)

Power = 859.356 watts

Power  860 watts

Results:

The designed water supply network was regularly distributed n the 876

households, we interviewed again some households after constructing the

designed water supply network, some says their lives was more easier and

they are not going to a far place just fetch for fresh water. The water inside the

tank undergoes filtration process from the ground to filter tube up to tank so its

safe clean for drinking water.

Data Obtained:

Flow Rate (Q) = 0.0030 cu.m/s

Tank Dimension (volume) = 7m x 7m x 5m

Discharge Pipe Used = 0.30 m diameter

Suction Pipe of Pump Used = 0.075 m diameter

Power at Pump = 860 watts

Conclusion

Storage of water in the form of tanks for drilling water and washing processes

is important in the present day life.

Design of water supply network is very tedious method. Particularly design of

designing water tank and pipe networking involves lots of mathematical formula

and calculation. It is also time consuming. Hence the study gives a solution to the

above problems.

There is a little a difference between the design values of program to that of

manual calculation. The program gives the least value for the design. Hence

designer should not provide less than the values we get from the program. In case

of theoretical calculation designer initially add some extra values to the obtained

value to be in safer side.
