Expanding end-use industries coupled with rising consumer personal income in emerging
markets such as China, India and Brazil is expected to be a major driving factor for the global
industry growth. The global industry is characterized by increasing regulatory intervention by
agencies such as EPA, TTB, FDA and EU regarding alcohol production and consumption. Other
agencies and local bodies are also actively involved in controlling teen alcohol exposure and
promoting ‘drink responsibly’ campaigns; the same regulations also have a huge impact on beer
production and its demand.

We have estimated the beer market by segmenting it on five levels including product,
production, category, packaging and region. On the basis of product, the beer market is
segmented as light and strong beer. Light beers include pale ale, amber ale, steam beer, ice
lager and other beers with low-alcoholic content of only xx% abv (alcohol by volume). Strong
beers on the other hand are generally above xx% abv and can reach beyond xx% abv as per
the current record held by Ghost Deer of BrewDog Brewery.
On the basis of production, the market is segmented into macro and micro-breweries,
depending upon the volume of beer produced. Micros produce less than 6 million barrels/year
while macros produce greater volumes. Beer categories include premium, super premium and
normal beer depending upon abv, quality and price. Super premium is rare, imported beer,
which is highly overpriced due to excessive excise and custom duties levied and generally
distributed to a limited audience.
Segmentation on the basis of packaging includes canned, bottled and draught beer. Draught
beer is mostly provided in bars & pubs by pressuring beer flow with Nitrogen or CO2. Regional
segmentation includes North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and LAMEA (Latin America, Middle
East & Africa).
Global beer market valuation was USD xx billion in 2014 and is expected to reach USD xx
billion by 2022, growing at a CAGR of xx% over the forecast period. Socio-cultural changes in
emerging markets across Asia Pacific as well as rising number of women drinkers is a vital
determinant for the global industry. Increasing adoption of premium and super premium beer
brands to portray social status is also expected to generate high global demand. Rising demand
for craft beer owing to increasing consumer awareness regarding local food coupled with a
transition in lifestyles is also expected to complement market growth.

Beer market dynamics are heavily dependent on alcohol consumption regulations as well as
beer manufacturing technologies and raw materials used. Hence, regulatory policies regarding
alcohol production, distribution and consumption coupled with increasing health concerns are
expected to challenge industry growth. However, the market is expected to undergo massive
changes in terms of development with shifting trend towards developing innovative flavors and
brewing processes. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The Brewer’s Association defines a craft brewery as, “A small, independent and traditional
brewery”. The ‘small’ denotes an annual production of xx million barrels of beer or less
(approximately xx % of U.S. annual beer sales). Beer production is attributed to the rules of
alternating proprietorships.
‘Independent’ denotes that less than 25% of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or
equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member that is not itself a craft
brewer and ‘traditional’ means a brewer that has a majority of its total beverage alcohol volume
in beers whose flavor derives from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients and their
fermentation. Flavored malt beverages (FMBs) are not considered beers as per this definition.
Regional craft brewery production stood at xx million barrels in 2008 which rose to xx million
barrels in 2010. The overall regional production from craft breweries is currently at xx million
barrels while the production from Microbreweries is xx million barrels.

Alcohol being largely used for direct consumption is subject to several stringent regulations
regarding its production, distribution and consumption as well. Breweries have to comply with
numerous governmental and federal regulations regarding harvest, processing and distribution
of beer. Major bodies such as the U.S. FDA (Food & drug Administration), U.S. TTB (Alcohol
and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau), U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), European
Union control and regulate overall market dynamics. Other restrictions include legal drinking age
limits by country, drunken driving laws coupled with taxation laws and other duties.
The U.S. FDA has introduced the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) which requires
brewers or distillers who sell their spent grains to farmers to use as animal food to follow current
good manufacturing practice regulations (GMPs) in order to help prevent contamination of
animal feed. The Federal Alcohol Administration Act has also been issued as a final guide to
help manufacturers in labeling bottled or otherwise packaged beers that are subject to FDA’s
labeling laws and regulations. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Beer cans have witnessed highest market penetration in recent years owing to high consumer
preference for lightweight, convenient, pressurized and non-breakable beer containers.
Manufacturers have also increasingly turned to aluminum cans owing to lower cost of
production, wide availability, energy efficiency and easy recycling processes. Beer remains cold
and frothy; it is also easily mobile in these cans, facilitating transportation over longer distances.

The product is expected to witness high demand owing to higher product mobility, greater shelf

compared to glass, which is much heavier and requires more investment. The segment is also
likely to benefit from growing consumer awareness regarding safety and recyclability of
aluminum cans as compared to glass bottles.
