REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction
Library Management System with Barcode is a system program that is used in a library for an
easy use of addition of books, burrowers, issue dates, return dates, fine payments. It is done through a
database programmed so, it gives a good interface to the operating user and a safe database for the storage
of data like books and borrowers. It is very useful software for librarians and it requires a computer for
the operation.

According to Ken Chad of Ken Chad Consulting we are at a major point of change in the wider
information economy within which library systems form part of a larger whole. He was writing in a
briefing paper about the study in library management systems. This study examined the systems used in
highereducation libraries across the UK and came up with some significant observations and
recommendations. It noted that the LMS market in UK higher education is already mature and that four
main vendors (ExLibris, Innovative, SirsiDynix and Talis) have almost 90 per cent of the market. This
market maturity means, according to the study authors, that the benefits to libraries of changing LMS
provider are limited.

Library users expect to find everything together says Stephen Abram, vice president for
innovation at SirsiDynix, the leading provider of software solutions and associated services for libraries.
According to her traditionally, the library management system or integrated library system (ILS) was
responsible for running libraries efficiently and effectively. Over the last few years, the role of the ILS
has been expanding from meeting library needs to delivering user experience.

According to Mohd Fairuz Anwar Bin Mahadi, The Library management system will store all the
books and members information that consist book number, book title, author name and racks to the
system database. The system also provides search function to help students find the book by number of
book. Search functions will search through the books database to look for the book and view where the
book is situated. For the administrator user, only librarians have access to view or edit data from the
system databases.

Karen Foss (2010), Library Director of the Catawba County Library System in Newton, North
Carolina has expressed that it is difficult to find materials to help new public library managers cultivate
their professional development. Most of the research and writings on library management have focused
on academic libraries and only recently has there been more interest in the administration of public
libraries. The skill and style of public library managers – the directors, branch managers, and department
and service managers who are leading these institutions – strongly affects the culture of a public library.

Barcodes have found varieties of applications in different fields, including libraries and
Information centres. In developed countries barcode patterns have become a familiar symbol for general
masses due to their appearance in all personal products, books, food and grocery packets, garments, other
records, etc. In fact barcode is not a very new technology; it had been in use as early as 1940s. Its first
commercial application can be traced back to 1960s as a method for tracking railroad cars. In India bar
codes are being used in various courier companies and the All India Radio as an automatic method of
identification. Many manufacturing industries and companies have been using barcodes for their products,
inventory control and shares. -Rajesh Singh

Aquilan made a comparable thesis on the automation of time attendance that records the time in
and time out of every employee using barcode system. It tends to eliminate the manual recording system
of time and attendance and also include salary computation of each employee based on the time and
attendance reports.

Ramon Faloran wrote in the article “The Computer Edge of the New Employment and
Opportunities “in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He stated that computer gives you a different feeling
about what is happening in the company. Business will be highly competitive and innovative because the
computer provides instant information.

Study by Cantoma in her thesis entitled “Computer Library System for St. James Academy”
stated that, in manual system in retrieving, maintaining security and piling records take place because of
the years gone by. Furthermore, these files were only kept in envelopes and folders in wooden rocks.
There are also instances when the right information is given to a wrong person, which affect quality of
service.

Mendez made a similar study for Vision Designer Inc. It has an identification machine aimed at
verifying a person entering through the swiping of identification cards. After entering their given code
number, the identification cards are swiped in the machines card reader to trigger the verification. If
access granted, the micro switch will then automatically unlock to allow enter. This will help a lot in
monitoring attendances accurately and more precise. A group of computer engineers in Rebisco Biscuits
Corporation proposed a thesis report for what is the same Innodata Corps is implementing right now a
computerized daily time record as an alternative for Bundy clock. The means of getting inside the
company premises is by swiping cards into a machine that reads every record of each employee then
monitors and displays the time a particular employee logs in and out.

According to Alvin Javelosa (2011) library is a collection of books, resources, and services, and
the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution,
or a private individual.
